      i see a little sadness in Michelle's eyes but... it's complicated... i don't think her mum is 'all that' wise... again complicated... she did the absolute best with what she had and in some ways it worked... And again complicated. Part of her mum's wisdom is in knowing that she isn't the blueprint for everyone, no one is. But a hodge-podge of tools is enough for me.

    Wow, Mrs. Robinson validates everything I told my kids. Thank you! I was feeling a little guilty thinking it was too harsh from a mother. Now, it sounds quite right to say "I don't know" sometimes, and "It's your education. I have already graduated." I can even hear my voice saying that as I type. Sending love to all of you ladies. I can't wait to read Mrs. Obama's new book. I wish I had a group like that. Such incredible parenting gems. I grew up with parents that shielded me from their imperfections. I have a young niece now and I told her “ adults don’t always know everything, she laughed at me like “ yea right”. Children really think that there is a switch that goes off when you turn a certain age and you will know everything and have everything figured out. As a 30 year old woman I’m still trying to unlearn that mindset.

The world saw educated black women with dignity, grace, class, and sophistication and not the same outdated tropes the media sell through reality shows and 90% entertainment. If only this could be the norm, but then there will be those that say, black women don't act like that, or that's not representing real black women.

    That sounds so selfish, but my parents were like that as well. We had to figure out what to do after high school and how to do it. I'm glad the attitude has changed, and more Black parents today are understanding the importance of encouraging your children to pursue their desires and assisting them in whatever way they can.

    • @TonyaMadeLife
      @TonyaMadeLife 2 года назад

      Encouragement is different from taking ownership. I'm pretty sure both of Mrs. Obama's parents encouraged her and her brother to think about and have a plan for how they would support themselves as adults. Mrs. Robinson raised them with eye to their being responsible adults and part of that was requiring them to own their education - research career options, take the ACT/SAT, apply to schools, etc. If the parent is in the drivers seat for major life decisions the child will have a hard time making decisions on their own. I think it worked out for both of their kids as it did for me.

    Her mother having the bravery of telling her kids she doesn’t know the answer to everything is powerful. So many parents, including mine, would rather tell their children anything just to maintain control of them rather than release them to seek the correct answers or point them in the right direction.
