They don’t understand the science and mechanics of race cars and basically think if you spend enough money you can be a top driver… Of course Nascar hasn’t helped with the latest ‘cup car’ iteration that has basically banished innovation and given the teams a manufactured product to buy and drive. It’s a mentality that goes beyond the current generation.
Agreed. Thankfully, we've gotten to hear a lot of the general bio stuff in these interviews on various podcasts, but always am left wanting to hear more stories from these retired racers (drivers, owners, crew chiefs, etc). Mark's podcast where he tells his racing career year by year is great.
How was this two hours?! Felt like 45 minutes. These two guys might be the most humble, kind, appreciative, genuine, and thoughtful "celebrities" I've ever seen. This is what life appreciation looks like.
In the early 90s, my partner (David R. Smith - druver) and I bought a NASCAR Sportsman car to race. We were at a practice session in Charlotte for us to try our car out, and for NASCAR to OK us to race. It was a Saturday morning, and we were unloading. Mark drove in the pits in his pickup, stopped at our pits and spent an hour or more with us helping us get up to speed. What a great guy and humble gentleman.... and one of the best in the business.
Long story short, When I first started interest in Nascar, my first fav driver was Davey Allison. When he passed away I became a fan of Alan Kuiwicki. After his demise, I was afraid to root for anyone. Eventually I became a Mark Martin fan, and have been ever since.
So you're a Ford man like I was growing up pulled for Awesome Bill, and then my favorite became Davey as well I was heartbroken when he and Kulwicki died just months apart but I as well on the side a Roush and Mark Martin fan because of the IMSA and ASA connection so trust I totally get it
My favorite driver of all time. I lived and breathed everything Mark Martin. Once he retired I stopped watching NASCAR. I have over 3,000 individual cards, 300 + diecast and countless other memorabilia. I watched every practice, qualifying, race, trucks, Busch, IROC etc.
You should still watch Nascar, support it or it goes away. Just saying! I've been watching Nascar since the mid 80s, I understand the changes haven't been great over the 20 year's. But I want future generations to be able to experience going to a Nascar race.
Same, I watched a few races after mark retired, but very few. I watch a few highlights now and then. When mark drove regularly I knew every driver, sponsor, car owner, all that. Now I dont even know half the drivers the only ones I know is the ones that still race or where talked about as up and comers then. I watch this on and off if the guest interests me.
I'm a Ford guy but if I'm honest I wish he had left Roush and went to Hendricks before he retired the first time. I think the car of tomorrow is perfect for him.

Jr unless you have listened to Mark's podcast you have no idea how good his memory is, it has to be the best memory I've ever seen, u can ask Mark about a race in the middle of 1980 and he will remember the set up and spring and things on that car. Love u Mark Martin

WHAT A GREAT INTERVIEW. It's really good to have the experienced Racer as the interviewer, after doing the proper homework to ask the right questions... and then let your guest talk.
I agree. I didn't understand JR's interview style at first, but now I believe it's the best way to do these long form interviews. Just kinda make a statement or ask a leading question and the interviewee just open up and steers the conversation. A lot better than interrupting all the time or the ones who argue with them about things they weren't there for.
What an awesome conversation! I started watching Nascar in 1984, man this brings back some memories. Mark Martin is a true legend who raced in the greatest generation of Nascar, in my humble opinion. Thank you Mr. Dale Jr for this great conversation 👍
Ya know, Dale... You could always do a full season of interviews, where you ask all the questions you didn't get to ask the first time. I've seen damn near every guest you've had on this show, and I don't think there is a single one, that it would break my heart if you had back. Two hours isn't enough. Some "where are they now" episodes or "part deux" might be cool. (Plus, Mark's a story teller. He likes to talk. We love to listen 😁)
Love this interview. Sad to see it just happening now and not sooner. My father (who was the biggest Mark Martin fan) wanted this interview to happen so bad. He passed away on 12/28 and sadly did not get to see it. Either way, thanks Dale and Mark!!!

Was wearing my Mark Martin 4-in a row T-Shirt today and came across this. When Mark retired Kyle Larson, my neighbor, stepped up. NASCAR is a continuous blast. This year I’ll go to Michigan race for another new track. Trying to see them all at least once.
I love this show. Mark came to New Smyrna a lot. I saw him on the trailer for Jack Cook (I an pretty sure it was Jacks) one night and was so star struck. Years later I sat next to him watching his son Matt run a truck. I just said hi. Same thing when Irvan comes or when Harrison Burton ran and his dad was there. I want to fanboy so bad and get a pic but you should respect these legends and let them enjoy their kids. I don’t need a pic to remember I got to say hello to some guys I’ve admired for many years. My parents worked for Gary Balough so I got to see a lot.
What a great interview! I was a Martin fan his entire Nascar career and still am to this day. I still search the vendor tents at the Cup races for Mark Martin Merchandise I don't have. One thing he said that really got me was how he said how him and Bentley Warren are best friends. Growing up 20 minutes from Oswego Speedway, Bentley was my man in the Supers. Can't wait for the next interview and the book!
Hello Dale and Mark great interview. I have been a long time Mark Martin fan since he came into nascar. I remember that Sonoma race Mark was talking about because I was there at the track watching the race.
Martin was/is my all time favorite NASCAR racer of all time. I saw him several times, but watching him take the pole then the win at Sonoma was a thrill. Another memorable one was when the "road" guy stole one at Martinsville. Speaking to him was always chill. Shirley Muldowney ( who remembered my son from the first time we met/talked! ), Bob Glidden who was always a great chat as was his son, and Mark are my all-time ambassadors of their sport. I'm under no illusion he would recall me but he was incredibly kind with his time to a young man who was a bit star struck :) Loved this interview.
Growing up I didnt cheer for Mark, was raised in a Chevy/Earnhardt household. It was truly a great episode to listen to him talk shop and I can say I have even more respect for who he is as person and was as a driver. Great episode!

Great hearing the 3 spring story. I used to go to Sharon Speedway in Hartford Ohio. Blaney's track now and it was a 1/2 mile asphalt. But I got to see Junior Hanley set a new track record almost every week.😊
While growing up, my family would watch nascar and I think that’s why I’m so into cars and racing. Mark Martin was always my mom’s favorite, so I always liked him as well, but Dale Jr was always my favorite driver. Now that I’m older, I respect Mark even more, knowing what he put into it and how clean he was on the track. Never was he the kind of person to make a dirty move, but he still did well. That’s the kind of driver I try to be while racing in iRacing. Thank you for getting him on the show. I love Mark and I’m always interested in his stories. I’m very excited for this episode. It’s the perfect video to watch after waking up to a bad dream lol

Been a Mark Martin and Roush Racing fan since I was a kid. I wish so badly that your dad was still with us. He would have been awesome to see him having these conversations with his old Racing colleagues. Keep up the great work Dale.
I was the same way, but was thinking, were there any fans that didn’t like Mark? There are very few drivers like him, where he was pretty much universally liked by everyone.
How could you not love two Class Acts remembering the memory's they have shared over the years. Both truly legions with so many fond memories... I've always enjoy listening two deep rooted Great Men that have meant so much to NASCAR can't wait for part 2...They both are the true hero's of the sport. Mark will always be # 1 to me!!!!

Mark Martin Winn-Dixie car could just about cover the field every week in the Busch Series. There were times I enjoyed watching him race even though I pulled for Dale Earnhardt I love to watch Mark Martin race. He was very good.
Mark was the man! I lived in the same community in Daytona as his family. I knew his son when we were 8-9 years old. We went to summer camp together. He bought my parents house when we moved away from Daytona. Nicest guy you'd ever meet.
Jack came up through drag racing, where Jack and Wayne Gapp did literally everything! Micromanage, scared people are gonna steal from him was all he knew! Gapp/Roush 4door Mavericks were dominant in NHRA for several years! Mark is all class!

Mr. Martin raced the way everybody should - he'd race hell out of you, but always with a level of respect so that he wouldn't take you out to beat you. There's a nobility, an honor to that. First of all I love you're channel. I think it's the best racing/nascar channel out there. Second - I think this is the best episode ever. I am a huge Mark M fan and this gave us a lot of insight to things that happened in his career. We want more! Mark was a wizard in setting up his cars, and a demon on the wheel. My favorite driver ever. I still remember the best story that proved why he was so good driving with his own setups (which in Cup were LOOSE). When was driving for Hendrick, he and Jeff Gordon swapped cars during practice, and Mark was super fast. Jeff got out of Mark's car and couldn't believe Mark could drive it like that, it was so loose he thought he was going to spin out in every turn.
I’ve listened to 2 Mark Martin pod casts now and I have to say you could have kept going for 8 more hours and I would have been right there. Mark is old school, it’s amazing what he remembers and the details involved. Mark is passionate about racing and he is and will always be one of my favorite racers. Thanks Jr.
Dale, Watched the whole thing. No disappointment. I think the entire community of racing enthusiasts, and NASCAR fans are beyond grateful for these interviews you're doing. Mark and you are both true gentlemen and the exchange of stories is priceless. Keep honoring your fathers legacy by talking to those who were closest to him and sharing those stories for all of his fans to hear. These interviews will become one of the most important parts of NASCAR history in due time, and I can't even explain how great it has been to hear racers talk amongst each other about the true challenges faced in our sport. Keep kickin ass!
Mark is my favorite driver of all time. He drove clean, didn’t whine and pitch fits and knew how the cars worked unlike so many guys now that know how to drive but just don’t know how the setups work. In fairness, most drivers in his day knew more about how the cars worked than most of the guys now. In my opinion, he’s the best driver to never win a championship and one of the reasons was that he wasn’t willing to drive dirty to get there. There were plenty of times that he could have taken out other guys and won championships but he was too honorable. On the other hand, Roush was also one of the reasons. Had he driven for Hendrick in his prime, he probably would have had a championship.
Memory, I'm older than Mark, but I don't think I'd ever be the kind to remember the setups, and the reasons for them. I mean, spring rates on all four corners, unsprung weight, cross weight, staggers...and at what track, all from 44-45 years ago. Not to mention all of the great drivers from what some of think of as "The Golden Age of ASA", including the great driver from Canada, Junior Hanley. Many years ago I went to Newfoundland, Canada, to see a race at a small track near Bishop's Falls. After the race I went into the pit area and talked about seeing Junior Hanley at New Smyrna. "You know Junior Hanley?" It was as if I knew God existed. Mark, Trickle, Reffner, Detjens, Shear, they all made each other better, which made the racing more fun.
I have missed not hearing Mark just talk. Such an iconic person. If there was a Busch race I expected Mark to win it. I just did not know how he got to where he got too and this said a lot about what I was curious about. Thank you for getting this interview out there.
Mark was always my guy back when,,,He reminded me always of the underdog with the patience and skills that it took to rise to the elite group,,,,,,,those were THE DAYS !!!!!!!!!

Mark Martin was my favorite Nascar driver. I met him in 1980 when i was 9 years old at La Crosse Speedway in WI. I still have his autograph!

When i was a kid Martin and Elliot were my favorite drivers. I hated it when they stopped racing full time . This show was awesome.

Now that I’m older, I respect Mark even more, knowing what he put into it and how clean he was on the track. Never was he the kind of person to make a dirty move, but he still did well. That’s the kind of driver I try to be while racing in iRacing. Thank you for getting him on the show. I love Mark and I’m always interested in his stories. I’m very excited for this episode. How could you not love two Class Acts remembering the memory's they have shared over the years. Both truly legions with so many fond memories... I've always enjoy listening two deep rooted Great Men that have meant so much to NASCAR can't wait for part 2...They both are the true hero's of the sport. Mark will always be # 1 to me!!!!

Mark was always my favorite. In part, because he was from my backyard almost, but always professional and humble.
Mark Martin Winn-Dixie car could just about cover the field every week in the Busch Series. There were times I enjoyed watching him race even though I pulled for Dale Earnhardt I love to watch Mark Martin race. He was very good.

Mark was the man! I lived in the same community in Daytona as his family. I knew his son when we were 8-9 years old. We went to summer camp together. He bought my parents house when we moved away from Daytona. Nicest guy you'd ever meet.

First of all I love you're channel. I think it's the best racing/nascar channel out there. Second - I think this is the best episode ever. I am a huge Mark M fan and this gave us a lot of insight to things that happened in his career. We want more! Keep up the good work Jr. There's no doubt the love and respect you have for Mark, you can see it in your eye's. If I could be so bold to say he's like a father figure to you - or at least that favorite uncle. Peace.

Mark was a wizard in setting up his cars, and a demon on the wheel. My favorite driver ever. I still remember the best story that proved why he was so good driving with his own setups (which in Cup were LOOSE). When was driving for Hendrick, he and Jeff Gordon swapped cars during practice, and Mark was super fast. Jeff got out of Mark's car and couldn't believe Mark could drive it like that, it was so loose he thought he was going to spin out in every turn.

I’ve listened to 2 Mark Martin pod casts now and I have to say you could have kept going for 8 more hours and I would have been right there. Mark is old school, it’s amazing what he remembers and the details involved. Mark is passionate about racing and he is and will always be one of my favorite racers. Thanks Jr.

Watched the whole thing. No disappointment. I think the entire community of racing enthusiasts, and NASCAR fans are beyond grateful for these interviews you're doing. Mark and you are both true gentlemen and the exchange of stories is priceless. Keep honoring your fathers legacy by talking to those who were closest to him and sharing those stories for all of his fans to hear. These interviews will become one of the most important parts of NASCAR history in due time, and I can't even explain how great it has been to hear racers talk amongst each other about the true challenges faced in our sport.

Enjoyed every minute of it.
Mark is my favorite driver of all time. He drove clean, didn’t whine and pitch fits and knew how the cars worked unlike so many guys now that know how to drive but just don’t know how the setups work. In fairness, most drivers in his day knew more about how the cars worked than most of the guys now. In my opinion, he’s the best driver to never win a championship and one of the reasons was that he wasn’t willing to drive dirty to get there. There were plenty of times that he could have taken out other guys and won championships but he was too honorable. On the other hand, Roush was also one of the reasons. Had he driven for Hendrick in his prime, he probably would have had a championship.
Memory, I'm older than Mark, but I don't think I'd ever be the kind to remember the setups, and the reasons for them. I mean, spring rates on all four corners, unsprung weight, cross weight, staggers...and at what track, all from 44-45 years ago. Not to mention all of the great drivers from what some of think of as "The Golden Age of ASA", including the great driver from Canada, Junior Hanley. Many years ago I went to Newfoundland, Canada, to see a race at a small track near Bishop's Falls. After the race I went into the pit area and talked about seeing Junior Hanley at New Smyrna. "You know Junior Hanley?" It was as if I knew God existed. Mark, Trickle, Reffner, Detjens, Shear, they all made each other better, which made the racing more fun.
I have missed not hearing Mark just talk. Such an iconic person. If there was a Busch race I expected Mark to win it. I just did not know how he got to where he got too and this said a lot about what I was curious about. Thank you for getting this interview out there.
Mark was always my guy back when,,,He reminded me always of the underdog with the patience and skills that it took to rise to the elite group,,,,,,,those were THE DAYS !!!!!!!!!
Thanks Dale & Mark for this interview . I've followed him since i was14 yrs old. I even road tripped to Darlington,SC from Sonoma just to see him race live on an oval track back in early 90's . Only thing missing was winning a championship . I think he could still do it today , but unlikely? Maybe 1 day Matt will drive ? Hope so ....Thanks MM # 60 ,6,5,01,8 for all the memories !!
