  • From Eddie Van Halen comes an all-new guitar-the Wolfgang-representing over 35 years of cumulative EVH experience and expertise in guitar design. The process undertaken to develop the Wolfgang took over two years of intense trial-and-error research. The formidable task yielded a series of prototypes that endured a full year of brutal in-concert road testing by Eddie on Van Halen's triumphant 2007-2008 world tour. The result is a bulletproof and beautiful tonal giant of a guitar that takes whatever you can dish out and then asks for more.
As the VH tour kicked off in the fall 2007, Eddie pushed every aspect of the Wolfgang's performance capabilities to the absolute limit, playing various Wolfgang prototypes every night on virtually every song. As the tour roared along, Eddie changed and adjusted components and specs until he was satisfied with the Wolfgang's sound, feel and looks. To prove that it was battle-worthy and could survive the road, performance data was collected from every gig for months and months to establish and confirm consistency and durability.
This is what makes the Wolfgang the culmination of Eddie Van Halen's endless pursuit of outstanding tone, durability and consistency. Available to the public beginning in January 2009, the EVH Wolfgang guitar is built to his exact specs and has every single feature of the Wolfgang guitars he himself plays onstage and in the studio. It's exactly what he uses.
"Everything that I've built, destroyed, stumbled onto, learned and experienced is in this guitar," Eddie Van Halen said. "Every aspect and component of this guitar has been examined and upgraded to the highest standards possible-stainless steel frets, double-potted custom-wound pickups, five-piece binding on the matching body and headstock, custom-made signature tuning machines and Floyd Rose® bridge, new low-friction pots, and the list keeps going. We left no stone unturned."
Eddie Van Halen exploded onto the rock music scene in 1978 with a homemade guitar known as "Frankenstein." "At the time, no guitar did what I needed mine to do, so I built my own that did," he said. Thirty-five years later, he's still doing it-studying and improving everything about the instrument. It's personal for him, and that's where the Wolfgang comes from.
"A guitar is a very personal extension of the person playing it," he said. "You have to be emotionally and spiritually connected to your instrument. I could've just stayed at home and built this guitar for myself. I do this because a lot of people ask if they can get what I use. Well, yes you can, and what you get is identical to what I use. We redid everything on this guitar. That's why it took so long."

Had he been able to quit smoking, "as seriously advised by his Dr" at that time, it could have had a significant impact...an additional 20 yrs free of a carcinogen entering your body is a huge chunk of time. His unwillingness to admit his smoking was even a factor in his original cancer, & therefore not willing to quit, is one of the things that sent Valerie over the edge. She separated from Ed in 2001, as a result of his mindset at the time. He really spiraled downhill after this w/his addictions & it was a terrible time for him personally. He was finally able to quit the alcohol & cocaine in 2007 (the yr their divorce was finalized), but he never could quit smoking. It's so, so sad.
His voice here is certainly affected by yrs of smoking, of course, but an even bigger impact, at this time, was a result of his many cancer treatments. Radiation directly into your throat will certainly provide this result, whether he smoked a single day in his life, or not. 💔

Instead of actually doing the lab report, we spent a couple of hours just grooving to the vinyl we were spinning and there right in the middle of it all was EVH and his electric guitar. Ed was such a great person. He had demons, yes, but understand that people can be assholes when they always feel bad. Ed had aggressive recurring cancer. Cancer. May God bless his soul! To live with that and always be grinning from ear to ear must have either been natural for him or a huge undertaking for him. Aside from his musical innovations and his untouchable talent, he loved his family above everything else which is the way it should be. That is the one thing about both of those brothers that I love the most.

They're not lying either, playing this thing and having it in your hands it's just fucking awesome. The necks are to die for and you can get a wide variety of tones just by playing with the knobs. As a metal player with three guitars that have EMGs, I was looking for something with passive pups, I was looking at a PRS, a Les Paul, and a Heritage, my local guitar shop just got these in and I tried one out, and I was floored. What a great instrument that this thing is. Ican't wait to own one.

I wasn't aware Fender is connected with EVH guitar. I thought the whole EVH operation was Eddie's and family. Now that he's gone, am scared to think what these industry giants gonna do with the brand. Hope the Van Halen family won't totally give up rights to this brand in exchange for royalty. Eddie himself said, everything he knows, experienced, stumbled upon in his journey is in these guitar. R.I.P. Champ :( _ _ _

@Thisis Fun He really was always chasing something, which led to a lot of great sounds. The ONLY downside to that was that as he started to get on in years, his ears were not the same and I really believe what he thought he was hearing compared to what he actually was hearing were two different things. His amps and live sound changed pretty dramatically from about 1998 onward. His live tone used to be really full, warm, and woody. Just the sexiest sound ever to come out of a guitar. But, from 98 on, his tone became very nasally. That punch in the chest wasn't there the way it always had been. His amps also became very buzzy sounding and way too high-gain, which changed the tone a lot from a very warm, full-bodied, lush sound to an almost abrasive, over-driven, bright buzzsaw. His fingers worked miracles right through the last tour. He always played like Eddie. But, his ear for tone faded. It happens. Dude played how many shows and never wore earplugs? Lol He was a machine. But, that takes its toll on the ears. Hell, I have hearing loss from seeing him dozens of times. I can't imagine what kind of loss he had.

When you consider how he changed the guitar itself (hybriding the Strat with the Les Paul, using wax around the pickup windings to improve the signal, etc), along with how he completely revolutionized how the instrument was played, is there a more important figure in the history of the electric guitar?

Just bought a standard on a whim and am BLOWN AWAY! Its like a Les Paul and Tele body scrunched together. Best necks and pickups of any Production guitar. I never thought id love a guitar with such a unique shape but when you play it you can feel the lightswitch flicked on💯💥

What i like about Eddie , Its like Same like Jimi Hendrix , they both changed nearly invented their kinda rock , they both where years ahead , but did it great . I like also that he is Dutch /Indonesian and made it big .
If it looks like he is not easy to work with ,his goal is the best ,you can officiously see that he is like that on himself to , the good thing about his gear is that its affordable for anyone and he plays with the same thing himself , with no twieks

It’s a shame EVH Gear hasn’t - or can’t - re-upload these old videos at 1080p. This is history in the making and should be presented in the best possible way. 480p is appalling considering the content. How about it guys?…
