I got this to work successfully on my Slim 9001 with 3.11U! Here's a tip, when burning the FreeDVDBoot disc, you should burn it at 1X speed and only USE DVD-R! Verbatim DVDs do the job well. The first disc I burnt at 3X speed as that's what IMGBurn said the lowest my DVD Burner could go but it ended up not working in my PS2. I took another DVD-R and chose to burn it at 1X speed despite what IMGBurn said and that one worked great!

Did all the steps as shown in the video on my SCPH-90001. Everything worked until I tried to actually launch FreeMcBoot from the memory card. The corrupted data was a regular purple cube not the Star Wars save icon, and when I pressed circle to go back the PS2 returned to regular menu. Suggestions? Edit: Redid the entire process but used the updated version by jolek and it worked. Thanks for the fire tutorial.
Replace the USB Driver's (IRX files) with the original one's from the oficial repack. The USB Driver's from jolek work, but FunTuna configurator freezes when browsing the USB devices to link apps

What if it still doesnt show up? I was already skeptical when i saw you had to burn a disc for this to work. I grew up with burning hundreds of games, movies n stuff but still... CD/DVD is a dead medium and should be treated as such, even tho this is often sadly the only way to mod something.
Followed all instructions perfectly. - Tried on 2 different consoles - both 70000 series - 1 hard modded, 1 not modded. - Tried 2 different usb drives - both reformatted correctly. - Tried using various applications on single layer DVDs. - First 2 discs unsuccessful. - Burnt using ImgBurn, CDBurnerXP, and other applications. - Used 2 different authentic PS2 MagicGate memory cards. - Burnt through 8 discs. - Inserted 2 controllers. - Removed 1 controller. - Inserted 2 memory cards. - Removed 1 memory card. - Used 4 different controllers. - Tried all methods with FreeDVDboot, FunTuna, and others. All came up with the same result - "The disc could not be read".

So I am writing here after a lot of trying and researching, apparently, when the error shows, I reboot the console and as soon as the screen starts showing the sony logo, i reboot it again, in short, just press the reboot twice and the disc force-loads and its fixed. At least it worked for me..
This is freaking great. Now I can do Free McBoot on any revision of PS2. I can go with any one now. This is great. I don't have to fuss over getting a Fat one. Can this done on a Mac?

Just try to run a normal DVD first, somenthing like a movie, to recalibrate the laser of your playstation, then restart and try the freemcboot exploit with the disk (it worked for me)
The only way you can have a permanent FreeMcBoot if you have a USB that has normal FreeMcBoot on it and ready to install and you use uLaunchELF from FunTuna and you install it like you would on any other console. It may actually work, not surely positive but this is a great 40$ saved to not get ModBo 5.0 Chip installed. Thank you people who still strive on PS2's
If anyone is still having said issue could be the laser needs cleaning. If that doesnt work could be the disc reader is shot happen to me on two slims the only way i could use them was with a freemcboot memory card i bought off ebay.
If you used a blue dvd-r disc and it won't read on your ps2 use the tape on top of the disc trick (you can Google it) and the disc may likely read after that (basically putting 2 pieces of masking tape on top of the disc)

Followed this guide today. It’s successful. Though the part when pressing x on disc icon, it just takes me back on memcard and disc. I dunno if it’s because my PS2 is modchipped. I also have uLaunchelf sitting on mc0 since 2010 where I attempted freemcboot. Luckily pressing the power button quickly 3 times boots to mc0 uLaunchelf. Thank u again for this guide
Can someone please help me? I followed all the processes. When I'm selecting the disc to boot into homebrew - I'm just coming back to the main screen (memory card and disc selection) after 3-5 seconds.
Good thing is that Matias Israelson forked Funtuna to work on FAT consoles with Free McBoot 1.8, so you can install it on any memory card, including those that don't have MagicGate support (cough, 3rd party, cough, slash, cough, Chinese counterfeit, cough, cards)

For Boot From DVD you Should Press 3 Time power Button when device is turned Off
My PS2 is: 90000 Series
That's only needed if you have a chipped console, which at that point you don't need to use FreeDVDBoot.
Does it work on scph-90004?
What CD did you use? Mine was DVD-R and it say the disc could not be read.
it worked on 3.11U, also burned the image to a DVD+RW, so rewriteable is compatible. sometimes these things dont work with everything

Believe it or not, I did initially at the slowest speed, and it did not work! 4x will do just fine. I had luck when i did such at that speed.

Use dvd decrypter and burn it at 4x speed if u have Matrix mod press and hold start button. Then it will work
Mine is a 9004 model and I have installed the FMCB on the memcard, however, when I insert it, nothing happens, it just opens the Browser... how come?
FunTuna like in this video will work, a true FMCB install will not work on the final Slim models.
