    I love your palette! The actual palette your paints are on.
    Actually, I like the canvas too. The storm looks great already. Curious to see how it turns out when you re done.

    When you started your initial painting, that for this demo is dry, did you first start with walnut oil on a blank canvas? If so, how long did you have to wait for the initial painting to dry fully or enough for layering? Are you working just with oil and no solvent when starting out your painting process? Thank you.

    I go through walnut oil too fast for it to ever go rancid. Haven't heard of that happening before, but I'm sure, like all painting mediums, after awhile they can go bad.

      +RedKing Interesting, fortunately, I haven't run into it yet. Hopefully I don't either haha.

      I called Dan at M Graham and we talked about demoting old walnut oil to the silicoil brush washing jar. It doesn't matter the state of the oil for brush washing as it's only job is to slip paint off. Wash the brushes once in a while to prevent them getting stiff from dried oil.

    I've always had some confusion about this. I went to an Asda supermarket looked at a bottle of Walnut Oil, and the ingredients just said Walnut Oil nothing else, it was dirt cheap so I bought it and painted with it. The painting of course took a long time to dry but it did and looked great.Everybody though in the art community told me you cant paint with that stuff you have to buy special Walnut Oil from an art shop and it's expensive. The painting is five years old now, shows no signs of cracking or yellowing, but I'm still hesitant to use it after the way those people reacted.

    Can a primed canvas have a very thin layer of walnut oil applied to it before putting down the initial application of oil paint to improve blending?

    I'm glad you made this because I had the whole fat over lean method backward. I thought lean mean thinned paint with turp and I thought fat meant straight paint less medium. You're a great teacher, I've watched many videos and only now do I get it. I'm so attracted to this painting. Where did this idea come from? It's a good one!

      @Kyomiibrown 9 лет назад +1

      Fat oil paint is oil paint straight from the tube. Mixing it with an oil makes it even 'fatter' and increases the length of time it takes to dry completely 'Lean' oil paint is oil paint mixed with more turpentine (white spirit) than oil, or oil paint mixed with a fast-drying oil.

    • @gagnonstudio
      @gagnonstudio  9 лет назад +2

      +joy gilley Well you are right. Lean paint is paint with less oil, so more oderless mineral spirits or turp, I'd avoid using turp though. The more oil you add to the paint the fatter it gets. So paint right out of the tube would be in the middle of the fat over lean scale.

    Thank you for your video! So Walnut oil, Linsees oil, or the Glazing medium they make, all does the same thing with a similar effect and can be used in the same way?

  • @nickfanzo
    @nickfanzo 8 лет назад +6

    rubens used walnut oil in his blues and whites as it yellows less than linseed oil.

      walnut oil was used more in the past and i think it needs a comeback! poppy oil is good for pale colors like yellow and white, skin tones.

    Tim, how long did you wait before blending the clouds? If I tried that using Liquin, as you know, it would just smear all over the place.

    at 4:30 did you mix oil paint wih walnut oil? (sorry it was off screen)

    • @gagnonstudio
      @gagnonstudio  9 лет назад +2

      +jaydrizzy17 Yes, I just added a tiny bit of walnut oil to it because it was getting a little sticky and dry. I just added it tiny bit to the tip of the bristles to "reactivate" the paint on the palette.

    Sweet, I had a friend try to explain to me but she got hung up about making paints fat - I was confused - this was a clear explanation and it helped to see how to do it. Thanks!

    that's a LOT of oil mate. You can achieve the same thing with a mix 1/2 walnut and 1/2 OMS. Problem with 100% walnut, in these quantities, is that subsequent layers will have hard time to adhere due to the high oil percentage of the film that you created and you'll have to deal with a lot of beading.

    • @MarcellaSmithVegan
      @MarcellaSmithVegan 5 лет назад +3

      didn't see any beading, 100% walnut oil is from the old masters, research if you would like, walnut oil is so so very LESS TOXIC THAN OMS, OMG

    Can I just use walnut oil when my painting is finished and dry to the touch and skip varnishing it? It's not a masterpiece and not for sale. Is a layer of walnut oil enough?

    • @francesb7515

      I do. There are many of us who do not use anything but walnut oil.

    Walnut oil will become rancid rather quickly in storage will it not?

    • @lorijones9579
      @lorijones9579 8 лет назад +1

      +Dick Damian Walnut oil can last up to 2 years without going rancid. It does better if you keep it in the refrigerator.

    • @gagnonstudio
      @gagnonstudio  9 лет назад +1

      +Sue Dahabsu You would have to use a medium. Walnut Oil and Linseed Oil are mediums for just oil paint.

    i am a beginner looking at a non toxic way of oil painting. My question is: can i use walnut oil from the supermarket?

    • @AnneGoggansQHHT
      @AnneGoggansQHHT 6 лет назад

      Trini R compare the cost of good supermarket walnut oil to Jerry’s Artarama, cheap joes,, or dick Blick. Difference in cost isn’t worth it.

      @myrnaluswenson4354 6 лет назад +3

      Supermarket walnut oil is processed to delay oxidation. You want your paint to oxidize otherwise it will never dry.

      You can use acrylic
      glazing medium. Liquitex, Winsor and Newton and Golden all make one.
