Patagonia will switch that right out. They are great! If you have a sentimental attachment to it they will repair it or return it to you so you can get it repaired locally. Zipper shouldn't be too big a deal.
I used to have the GoLite umbrella. After years of use it wore out. Besides rain, snow, and sun cover I used the umbrella for a make shift door with the tarp I was using.
The solar panel value is still an interesting question. If the panel just charged to inreach explorer and you had the inreach explorer on default mode 24/7, it should last 100 hours which is 2,450 mAh, meaning for a 8 to 9 day hike, you need just one change. The solar charger did that, but we can compare the mAh of the solar charger vs the battery pack. If the solar charger did one charge of the inreach, it gave 2,450 mAh for 6.7oz, meaning it 365amh per oz or twice that if the inreach stayed fulled charged, or 730 mah per zo. Then we can use the Anker for comparison, 20,000mah for 12.4oz, it is ~1600mah per oz. Up to about 9 days, the Anker charge to weight ratio seems a lot better. The more days you are without a charge the better then solar charger becomes, but you need to be out for about 20 days before the solar charger seems to get a better weight to charge ratio. Though these are all just ballparks give the info from this video.
+Loathomar Good points. I wouldn't leave my Anker at home, but on some of these long stretches it could be worth it.... or perhaps a smaller Anker paired with the solar panel. I did get to camp early and just laid the panel out for an hour and charged my iPhone 6% which I thought was pretty good.
Thanks for the positive recommendation on The Patagonia Thermal Weight Zip Hoody. I went with something else that was heavier and really more of a Fleece Layer. I sold it and then purchase the same black color Hoody. The last two trips I have used it as a long sleeve shirt; and also used it over my Sleep baselayer in camp. Under a Patagonia Houdini it is awesome warmth down to 32* were I break out the Down Jacket. I still carry a fleece Vest Layer but it may be disappearing because of the versatility of the Thermal Hoody and lack of use. I consider the Houdini and this Thermal, a key gear selection. I would probably love the Helium II if I didn’t have a Pre Cip and Houdini instead. Thanks for all your videos.

Regarding the lighter1--I do think that it's best use is for boiling water. And when handling the water, one does need to be careful as the handle is not sturdy and requires a second grabbing point to stabilize it while pouring it.
Hi Bigfoot, the problem you had with your water filter bag is quite common. Get a bag from HydraPak. I got a 2 liter bag and the filter fits perfectly.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think HMG only added the black dynema option within the last year or so. That may be the reason you didn't see any out there. I'm a ULA Catalyst guy, but I think if I ever need to swap out I might give the HMG a try in black - even though I prefer higher visibility colors for packs and jackets just because there are hunters out there in national forests and other trail areas. If they offer red someday, then HMG will almost certainly be my next pack.

+EasyCookVideos It made mine sweaty, but i sweat quite a bit and will usually have a damp shirt regardless of the pack. My Arc Blast had a lot more air flow with the arc'd external frame.

I know it is annoying to have to backwash your filter while on trail, but having a higher flow rate (flux rate) on a membrane filter is not necessarily a good thing. If the Katadyne filter is achieving the higher flow rate through a larger membrane surface great, otherwise not good. If the filter does not contain a larger membrane surface area that means more stuff is getting through, that the filter isn't as "tight" as the Sawyer.I like that the "Lighter one" bear canister weighs more than a Bear Vault BV500. lol

+Canyon Overlook i didn't layer my pat thermal hoody under. I didn't sweat too bad going up Whitney as I was pretty beat and was taking it slow. When I got to the top after about 5 minutes I threw on my down jacket above my OR Hel. I think I wore my down jacket most the alway down as I wasn't producing enough body heat to keep me comfortable on the way down to the Portal.
Have you done a full review on the HMG 2400 pack yet? I have a Zpacks Arc Haul, and I am thinking seriously about getting the HMG 2400 for shorter hikes....thx

+Brent Welborn Only if you're charging a device in cold temps. When I charged my electronics at night I kept them inside my sleeping bag so I don't think it made an impact to my battery
interesting! I would have guessed that cold temps would be best for batteries (unless we're talking sub-freezing temps). Usually battery overheating is what causes poor performance. I'll keep that in mind on my hikes.
+Brent Welborn I'm not sure the exact science behind it, but living in MN where it does reach negative temps all the time, your battery life on things goes down quite a bit.
j gil i picked up 3 pairs or the running style recently from mass drop. they are nice for running and day hikes. i have not yet used them on any overnight trips yet

Dr Bronners is the best, I use it everyday in the shower and when hiking or riding.
Would consider going for the HMG Porter for the reasons you gave. Then you can add the options you want from HMG or 3rd party vendors.

What do you do for insect repellent? I used Repel 100 and a couple of other brands available at REI and still got sucked on

10:40 - you might want to look into the ULA Catalyst. The hip belt pockets are massive.

The Hierro v2 were fantastic in the High Sierra these passed 2 seasons. The v3 is utter crap unfortunately. Luckily I still have 3 fresh pairs of v2s.

I love the mesh on my Osprey & Zpacks packs. Doesn't the Hyperlite pack make your back sweaty?

+Nancy B. Not at all. I kept it on my right side mesh pocket lashed into place. It doesn't really take up much room at all in the pocket.
