My Momma taught me in 71 her 1st new car. 1st only when stopped (well she learned on a 51 with non-synchronized 1st) 2nd at slow speeds and when turning. 3rd don't worry about it. Stop start, stop, start, try 2nd, turn, stop repeat around a parking lot. now drive home. umm you can use 3rd at 30 don't need to wait till 45 mph. My 1st 3 cars were 3 speeds and I taught most of my brothers and sisters how to shift.
I learned to drive in 1974 in my Dad’s 1972 Ford F100, 302V8, 3 speed on the column. I still remember the day we were driving back home from their cabin and he pulled over and told me it was time that I learned to drive. I was 14.
So much fun! I remember teaching all my siblings how to drive a manual. It’s the only way I agreed to teach them how to drive. We all started driving with a manual transmission.
Yep, learned to do that on a '67 D100 long bed with a slant six. Cost my Dad $400, used self-tappers to professionally install a "new" galvanized floor, and made sure to keep a couple quarts of oil and a couple gallons of water on board at all times, just in case. Couldn't get it to go over 70 mph, no matter how hard I tried. Dad may have been smarter than I gave him credit for...
I learned to drive a 3 on the tree at 13 in a 1964 falcon. It was fun learning manual and especially a 3 on the tree because not many people can drive it.
Oh you just tugged on my heart-strings with that... A '64 Plain Jane four door, 3 on the tree, Falcon was my first car ever back in 1975 or six... close enough... My pop helped me with a clutch and flywheel R & R as well we took and did a R & R on the six cylinder, the replacement was ordered through Sears Roebuck and picked up at the side pick-up door. The Falcon started as a fleet car in service with Pacific Bell painted olive green, then I picked it up, well worn out, as a Fuller Brush Door to Door traveling salesman had bought it from Pac Bell to use on his route... Oil embargo days made the little six with a manual a honey no matter the color. It seemed to figuratively sip the leaded gas and would take you miles and many more with a smile
Likewise, did same. Dad prided himselft on never paying more than $500 for his car. Mom got the "nice" stuff"! Lot of Falcons with "3 on the tree" during my early years.
So much fun watching this :D Reminded me of driving my uncles FSO Syrena. Had the same manual transmission with a column shifter. Looks like Briar pretty much got it. One full day with this and he won't even have to think about it.
Briar did very well with a dodgy gearbox (or gear linkage) and having to double-declutch. I learnt to drive 35 years ago and have only ever driven cars with full synchromesh where the gearbox was in good condition. Never driven an automatic, either the full fat PRND123 type or the rubber band CVT ones (which on city cars sold in Europe, are generally considered beastly).
I remember as a kid our 63 Chevy II had three on the tree. It got really stiff to shift as the car got older. My mom would drive it and she would yell at me to lean over from the passenger seat and we used our combined strength to shift the gears because she wasn't strong enough to shift it by herself. She finally got to where she wouldn't drive the car by herself because she needed my brother or I to help her with those shifts. Fond childhood memories!
It's hard to get your head around Manual transmission because you have to have your left foot on the clutch petal all the way down to the floor to start a Truck or a car and before you change gear you got to put the clutch petal all the way to the to the floor and after you change gears slowly bring up the clutch petal and slowly put your right foot on the gas pedal that's how I got taught by my dad.

This is why I haven't changed my 3 on the tree to a 5 speed, it's the best anti theft device in the world 😂

I had a 65 Rambler American with a 3 on the tree and I loved it. Now I’m working on a 60 Comet with a 3 on the tree

somtimes when it wont go into 1st or reverse let off the clutch a bit then push it back in then slide it into 1st
