  • You remember the movie Moneyball? Well, meet the Moneyball of Columbia University, the Society for Baseball Research, a club that brings together students of all interests and disciplines to talk about and study trends in the sport.
What started as a friendly group of baseball enthusiasts, has grown to be an essential part of students’ extracurricular and career development experience. The club published a paper, “Optimizing Outfield Positioning: Creating an Area-Based Alignment Using Outfielder Ability and Hitter Tendencies,” which is available in the spring 2021 issue of the Society for American Baseball Research’s journal.
Group leaders Anthony Montes CC’21, Anna Flieder CC’22, and Matt Chagares CC’22 share more about the origins of the club and how they’re growing toward an even brighter future.

I added a Sabermetrics course to the high school I was at in 2016. I worked with a few MLB asst GM to get ideas in its development. It’s cool to see this actually starting to grow. My students use R to create spray charts along will all kinds of metrics. The Cardiinals actually hire a couple students each year as paid interns for their minor league affiliates. I work in west palm beach so it’s a natural fit. Way to go folks! More schools should be doing this.

I am very interested! I tried clicking on the request to join form but it didn’t work. Currently interning with the St. Louis Cardinals pursuing my Economics degree, and would love to hear more about this club!
