  • In the hills of rural Bulgaria lies Mogilino, a small village whose main employer is the children's Social Care Home - where 75 unwanted children are growing up. Few of the children can talk, not necessarily because they are unable but rather because no one has ever taught them how.
With extraordinary access, director Kate Blewett takes us into this tragic silent world. She meets children such as, Milan, the gentle giant who spends his days doing chores and watching over the others, and mildly autistic 18 year old, Didi who is able to talk, and has plenty to say, but no-one to speak to. The children that surround them suffer a variety of problems, many are blind or deaf and some are unable to leave their beds, many are literally wasting away.
Abandoned into the hands of the staff at Mogalino these children inhabit a bleak uncaring world, so devoid of normal everyday stimulus that many have taken to rocking slowly and constantly in their chairs just for something to do.
Bulgaria has more institutionalised mentally and physically disabled children than anywhere else in Europe. This film is a heart-rending and eye-opening look into the life of one such institution.

I’m only a few minutes in, but seeing the children rocking themselves breaks my soul. This is a coping mechanism. Children need that rocking and loving soothing motion, it feeds a part of their soul and psyche that cannot be fed in any other way. When not met, they learn to aggressively rock themselves. It’s the only way their needs are met- to meet them themselves. What a horrific reality for a 3 year old.

These poor children. Can’t do anything for themselves, and no one was doing anything for them. The state of their health is deplorable. I mean it’s honestly so hard to even look at them bc it makes you feel guilty. Guilty for not knowing that there were children living like this, and guilty for being helpless, and not being able to do something after knowing their situation existed. I know this is old, but those feelings still arise within me when I look at them. It’s just a shame that the adults in charge of the children do absolutely nothing to help their condition. The cries of these babies are gut wrenching 😞😞😓
Edit : just got to the part where they are being well taken care of, and it warms my soul to see the smiles on their faces. It’s like the other people thought that just bc they could not communicate, that they weren’t deserving of love and compassion. I watched the original documentary of Mogilino years ago and was angered and disturbed at what I saw. The male staff should never have been in charge with watching over the girls during showers. It was reported that none of the females were virgins. I can only imagine what was happening to those young girls under his care. It was so sad to see most of the children so malnourished and rocking themselves to soothe. The director should have been fired, she was only concerned with the building, bragging about recently buying three umbrellas for the pool and feeling sorry for herself. It broke my heart to see Milen, Misha and Vassy being abused as they were. I was so happy at how much the three as well as Didi thrived when they were taken out of that environment and moved to other facilities where they all thrived. If not for the reporter, Mogilino would most likely still be in operation today. She is a true hero!

Also it was found the some of those girls were sa'd by some of the men over the years and the girls never had any gynecological care either. But im guessing they left it out aince yt is stricter now as we all know. But i still love seeing this. I love seeing them happy again. It makes me smile so much. I wished i could just love on all those babies. I could never abandon my kids no matter what was was wrong with them.
