This is such a piece of art. I mean jeeze! But then again, it's MJ.
As both of you stated, it's not just smooth, it's SO smooth. Like not just the choreography and the camera angles and the setting and the storyline and the acting, but the sheer movement...the very anatomy of the movement, the energy is just oozing smoothness and attitude. MJ's way of being able to seemlessly go from quick to slow, from explosive to casual, from group choreography to individual movement and back to group choreography...
Like you pointed out, the audacity of the - of course perfect - in-place moonwalks, taken times a hundred by being almost blocked by dancers between MJ and the viewer (especially the first one); I mean, it doesn't get more from the back of one's hand than that (in every sense, meta-sense)! Yeah, that's just MJ being casually magical in the background, if you crane your neck you might catch it. Or the moonwalk going back when ganster goes towards MJ, I mean the in your face-ness of that..!
Also, that's something quite essencial about MJ, that they don't need to be front and center all the time. I mean, we all know they can be (that is usually just before we faint), but they don't need to be; neither for the viewer to feel their presence nor to like sell their brand, have maximum exposure. MJ's presence is always felt, that's part of ther superstar quality, and like superhuman quality if one speaks on a film like Heal the World, where MJ isn't seen through the whole video yet felt in every second of every scene. And they have never any problems with sharing space to show off other artists qualities.
Or like the kick in 7:18, it's so casual it's basically lazy. Oh, and perfect.
"Not bad! No, this is Smooth Criminal." You guys crack me up!
Oh and Lauren, don't be fooled. Moonwalker is a wonderful shortfilm musical sci-fi saga with a begining, a middle and an ending. I promise!
