I wouldn't have taken Mark for a Minion fanboy. Bizarre.

I may not agree with your choices, but don't ever change, Mark.
he has to like something right?
"Nothing is as funny as the Minions" -Mark Kermode

Watching this review makes me feel like I've entered the Twilight Zone
Imagine if Spectre had minions: Best film he has ever seen :)
Yes Mark! Good for you! Being a lover of film and an appreciator of high art doesn't mean you also have to be a snob! I also love the Minions - they're brilliant!
As someone who despises Minions, I enjoyed their segments in the new movie. They didn't overshadow the main plot and they're were genuinely funny relief. However, I'm disappointed Mark didn't talk about the rest of the movie as there were lots of others ups and downs.
The "review" basically just boiled down to "the Minions are still in it - and I like them"
I think Mark writes all those facebook posts with minions on them ;P
Mark's love of minions and that kind of childish humour is utterly bizarre.

Minions are not as cute as Mark's childlike joy. If I'm sad I watch his review of Mama Mia and it cheers me up.
Mark Kermode the only 50 plus year old minions fan
The 50-plus demo are the prime posters of terrible Minion 'memes' on Facebook. And the only reason I don't say 'only' is that some of the posters are in their late-40s!
This was another movie I saw with my son at the drive-in. I'd never seen the others or The Minions film. Frankly, I assumed The Minions were for middle-aged, crazy cat ladies - at least that's what my Facebook feed told me was the case. But I have to say this film charmed me. The bits with the over-the-hill child star were what made me laugh the most. And, yes, the Minions were very funny, too. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go clean my cat's litter box...
I dont like most of those American comedies kermode hates so much but I can't think of anything worse than minions. Is Mark being a tedious contrarian or does he genuinely have a bad sense of humour?
Minions are my vogon poetry.
Mark I love you but god I do not get your love of the minions
Apart from the minions and that little girl I did not enjoy the movie as a whole, the minion are not as annoying as in their standalone movie, they work for me when there's a little bit of them here and there.
Is Mark dying? The only way I understand this opinion of minions is if he's got a month to live and is desperately trying to make his peace with modern cinema.
...That review just left me confused.
Not going to lie. I used to like the minions until it became overused. I disagree completely with Mark since I did enjoy this film but the minions were the worst thing about it. If you want the real reason to watch this movie then I have 2 words. Trey Parker.
saw it 2 days ago and I agree with Mark this is the best in the franchise.
30 year-old male here, and I also love the minions. It seems my fellows in this age bracket don't get it.
Minions movie was a little too much...but I enjoy the Minions in their bit parts in the DMe flicks. I always laugh at their voiced jibberish and pratfall comedy... (more than 95% of the regular comedies these days - Baywatch, Snatched, The House, anything from Sandler post Billy Madison/Happy Gillmore : not funny).
love the 80s music in it
I'm so surprised that mark likes the minions
This is kind of like seeing Mark reviewing Jack and Jill and saying "I loved the bits with Adam Sandler because Adam Sandler is just one of the funniest actors in the business".
why is it so bad that somebody likes something you don't? Why do we expect people we like to be so very much like us? Mark Kermode is just being himself in his own opinions and that's fine by me.
From what i've seen from most people, they're just confused rather than upset. He's entitled to his opinion. Other people just think his opinion stupid, which is fine too.
What is funny is that you are getting riled up by other people sharing their opinion, condemning the very thing you wish to uphold.
Finally a rational argument in this murky comment section. To me, it's kind of endearing that Mark enjoys something as silly and lightweight as the Despicable Me films. One doesn't have to solely enjoy deep arthouse films to maintain their integrity as a critic.
Backyard Pix true, but op does seem a little passive aggressively miffed. maybe it's just me.
Oh man, this wasn't good! I enjoyed the first 2 but this had the thinnest plot ever, just filled with action and half hearted jokes.... this film was just made for the hell of it :/
Mark, we all wanna know - why do you like minions?
What.
Yep, 'Despicable Me 3' is a mess that makes no sense whatsoever, but it doesn't matter because it's funny, and funny because of the Minions. They're not big, or clever, but just inherently funny. 3/5
Yep, even Mark quoting that line makes me laugh. Bottom!
Huh..

Me and my daughter are with Mark here. We love the Minions we laughed pretty much through all of the Minions movie. So we are looking forwards to this...............bottom
Amazing movie spoilt by quite a lot of hideous songs Pharrell Williams songs are weak and the ending song by him with Trey Parker “Hug Me” is one of the worst cinematic ending songs to any movie ever made just made me run out of the cinema as fast as I could Great Great movie, Bad Bad Soundtrack
This guy makes money reviewing films?
Why is everyone surprised that he like the minions? They're little cartoon characters who make fart jokes - they're not exactly offensive in any way.
Spaceman2921
Because they're so low effort and low quality. It's easy to make something cute when it's unbelievable simplistic. It takes skill and creativity to make a character like woody or sully, that are complex in appearance and personality and you can tell so much about who they are by looking at them. You can't tell a thing about the character of any minion.
The minions movie is awful. There's no plot, no depth, and it's just a sequence of events and things that happen which is very different to telling an interesting story.
You can't excuse bad film making and bad character design by just saying it's a movie for kids.
Simplicity isn't always a bad thing. Remember that they're one note walking fart jokes in a children's animated movie, more like the three-eyed aliens in toy story rather than any of the main characters. If they still make people laugh, then they're doing exactly what they need to do.
People laugh at anything. What makes you laugh is subjective, but good quality humour and comedy takes skill to produce. Toy story is both funny and you care deeply for the characters. Do you genuinely care for Dave and Bob? Could you even point out Dave and Bob in a crowd of minions?
I think there's no such thing as a cheap laugh. Making people laugh is difficult enough as it is. I just think that there are better things to be angry at than completely harmless and much loved kids cartoon characters.
People seem to be surprised or confused rather than angry. Why are you getting "angry" at other peoples harmless and inoffensive opinions?
Lost respect for Kermode with this review.
don't only respect the man when you agree with him
You don't have to agree with Mark Kermode, just enjoy his reviews for the entertaining radio that they are.
