  • Go behind the scenes with Sabres general manager Kevyn Adams and his staff as they debate prospects and evaluate trade possibilities prior to selecting Zach Benson, Anton Wahlberg, and Maxim Strbak during the 2023 NHL Draft in Nashville.
    Director of amateur scouting Jerry Forton then breaks down tape on the three prospects in an exclusive film study and takes us back to the NHL Scouting Combine, where the Sabres first interviewed their top selections.
    The episode also follows the Sabres’ draft class - including Buffalo native Gavin McCarthy - back from Nashville to KeyBank Center for their first development camp in blue and gold.

      @@jamesmustaine2482 Hey James, the way you wrote this is actually fine and the "correction" you received is arguably incorrect. Your sentence can be read as "Buffalo has so many prospects (that) it's insane," so you actually don't need a comma. A stickler would argue you need a period, but the reality of online speech is that online comments seldom end in periods; it's become a stylistic choice

    I know the hype was there but we need to settle the excitement here. First make the playoffs. Picking players with high draft capital doesn’t equate to success . Sam Reinhardt and jack eichel were high draft picks and then were both traded and are doing well in better systems. Buffalo needs a better system first. Let it sink in

      I'll take the under. The only thing that might keep him from the NHL after this year is the depth in front of him.

    • @BillyBuffalo354
      @BillyBuffalo354 8 месяцев назад +2

      definitely under. And the reason has nothing to do with his offense skill and elite hockey sense. It's his all around game. One of the best defensive fwds in the CHL the last 2 years, and can play all situations. That will get him to the big club and allow him to stick around sooner rather than later.

    • @bajjanitor
      @bajjanitor 8 месяцев назад

      He needs to add strength and speed. Which certainly is possible in 2 years, but chances are he'll get some bumps and bruises along the way that will slow him down a tad so I'd go with the over.

    3:18 "he's also 5'9""... How can you not even get the height right of a player that you're considering drafting this early when you use it as a point against him?

    • @houstonrefinery719
      @houstonrefinery719 8 месяцев назад

      What are you talking about? He's listed at 5'9" and all the scouts know he's 5'9". Weird comment.

    • @bajjanitor
      @bajjanitor 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@houstonrefinery719 No. He was measured at 5'9.75" at the combine, that's 5'10" when you skip the decimals. And I'm pretty sure he didn't shrink half an inch between the combine and the draft.

    • @scarycrazymann
      @scarycrazymann 8 месяцев назад +3

      @bajjanitor so he's not actually 5'10" you're just rounding up

    • @bajjanitor
      @bajjanitor 8 месяцев назад

      @@scarycrazymann Correct. That is how the height of every NHL player is recorded. Truncating would make no sense. But obviously even less so to just truncate certain players height and round everybody else's. Which is why I'm saying it's embarrassing that he didn't know the height of the player he's calling too short.

    I mean, it’s nice he’s able to play the game two steps ahead of Junior Major players but he’s never going to have a highlight reel goal like we see in this video. Not in this league. It will be interesting to see what type of role he carves out for himself in the NHL. If he becomes a point a game player in the NHL that would be incredible, I don’t think he has the game for it right now but maybe someday…

    • @BillyBuffalo354
      @BillyBuffalo354 8 месяцев назад +5

      Right bc you never see Jeff Skinner, who's built nearly identically, has the same moderate speed but elite edgework, use his skating and skill to dangle through defenders for a highlight goal. Come on. Just admit you havent watched a single game of his and move on.

    • @robertmessinger6053
      @robertmessinger6053 8 месяцев назад

      @@BillyBuffalo354 Skinny has been a point per game player only once (last season) in a really nice 13 year career. Seriously, he’s played a lot of hockey without a playoff game and that’s a huge story bigger than Kyle Williams. Hate to go all Brian Duff here but that’s the reality, few players hit that point per game mark consistently in the NHL. I think he has that type of ceiling and I followed him all last season. I couldn’t help but notice him since I was constantly checking to see what Savoie was doing. He was obviously the most productive player on the roster until he got hurt and I like Savoie a lot. I’m just saying, pump the brakes and let him develop into the player he’s going to be. Anyone who knows hockey knows that even the room we saw in the video - there is a projection range when you draft young kids who aren’t fully developed. NFL? Easier to make those projections but very, very difficult in the NHL. If Benson becomes a point a game guy in the league and plays responsible defensively this is the best draft pick ever. Don’t ever assume point a game production, remember Eichel? Twice in eight seasons and he was a generational player. I have high hopes for him to be part of a team that wins a Stanley Cup in Buffalo and that’s the biggest compliment I can give any player. Realistically he doesn’t need to score like Houdini to do that, he just needs to play a solid two way game and be opportunistic when his number comes up. Again, I don’t see him beating 4 guys for a goal like James Bond no matter how good his edges are. Remember Savoie in the Calder Cup Conference Finals? I’m still very high on Savoie but the difference is enormous between Jr. and any level of professional hockey in the US/Canada. The jump is enormous and very few make it quickly but if he actually makes the team out of camp? I’d say he’s got huge potential to be a regular point a game player. I’d be thrilled with him being another Casey Mittelstadt and I love the evolution of Casey’s game…

    • @bjarczyk
      @bjarczyk 8 месяцев назад

      It’s illogical to conclude he will “never” be that good. It’s impossible to project how good or not any prospect will be. Who are you to say he won’t evolve his game at a higher level? He’s only 18.

    • @robertmessinger6053
      @robertmessinger6053 8 месяцев назад

      @@bjarczyk He’ll never be good enough to beat an NHL forward, two NHL defenseman and an NHL Goalie - single handed. You don’t really see anybody scoring goals like that in the NHL but that’s not what’s going to determine what type of player he becomes. Yes, you can project what you think a player is going to be and we have Kevin Adams leading the charge in that department. He was dead on the money with Kulich and Peterka and those guys are going to be really good players. Who’s too say Savoie or Kulich don’t become point a game automatics in future years? The odds are heavily stacked against everyone becoming a point a game player, you’re lucky to have 3 of them on a team. No way Benson is a point a game player in the NHL in 2023 through 2024. He probably isn’t making the roster to start the season here. If he someday becomes a regular 30 goal guy, is tenacious on defense and scores playoff goals? I’m good with that and maybe someday he has a career year with 80 plus points. That’s a lot more realistic than projecting him to be the next Patrick Kane, less much pressure on him too…
