  • Hyundias have come a long way in my life time and before they release their first offical "Hot Hatch", the i30 N, we decide to spend some time with the i30 SR. As a daily driver it is hard to fault, but we wanted to see how fun it is.

A 14.7 second pass down the quarter is pretty good for a warm hatch.

You might have just convinced me into buying one

That’s not the premium version at the start as it’s missing the chrome window trim... I just got the non premium version myself but with a sunroof added. Great little car.

I’ve got an Elantra SR Turbo with the DSG, it’s a great daily driver to commute to the city for a great price. Couldn’t be happier.

MotiveDVD I looked at the i30 SR too but the Elantra was more practical. More boot space, more leg room in the back and it’s 50kg lighter looking at the specs. I’d be really interested to see them line up at the drag strip to see if there’s much between them, if anything at all.

Me too, but life in Melbourne eg. parking, meant the i30 model shown on video. A really great car but the Elantra I'd buy in a flash if I lived & drove in the country.

I have watched many, many videos on this car. But not one goes into any features it has or how they work.
Like how well, or not well does the air cond & heating work. Are the air vents in the correct locations to give a coverage.
How good or bad is the radio & how it sounds with cd, bluetooth, usb. The GPS? Is the layout easy to understand while driving?
The everyday things you do while driving the car. The cruise control. how well does it maintain speed. Up & down hill?
Windshield wipers & washers. How well do they work, specially at speed (100-120 kph)
Many many more questions that go into owning a car.. again not one RUclips review have I seen any of these thing mentioned.

So, I'm not going to do a video review on these questions, as I've never created a video review, nor to I have the time! However, I do own an i30 SR Premium (03/18 build), so I'll tell you what I know/have experienced so far. 1 - Air con/heating. No complaints on this at all. It's fast to work, powerful and the coverage is great. I haven't used the fan speed higher than a third, but even at that level, you could definitely feel it on you. Max is probably a small gale storm! Heated/Cooled seats are a joy as well. 2. My Radio/Media - My city doesn't have digital yet :-( but standard FM coverage is spot on. Stereo is of a top quality. Sure, it's not Harmon/Kardon or Burmeister, but the volume is solid and I can't really fault the quality. Volume maxes at 40. 19 or so on the radio is pumping, as it is via Carplay. Bluetooth requires about 30 to be at a decent level, but this seems to be standard with Bluetooth music streaming in any car. Haven't tried USB. 3. GPS - good solid GPS Nav. Maps are large and clear to view. The search function is quick and easy to use. Voice commands are clear and accurate for turns (and also give a beep at the correct turn). Multiple views included (current direction, always north, 2d view, 3d view). Turn by turn view also on the dash. 4. Cruise control. Can't fault it. Holds the correct speed on flat, incline and decline. Wipers & washers work well at all speeds including the auto function. Very quiet in operation also. 5 - Other. Seating is fantastic. Past two cars have been BMW (330i and 120i), which have (for me) the best seating in standard cars. i30 surpasses these BMWs for leg, upper back, lumbar and side bolsters. Coming from the BMW, I would say though that the steering wheel is not as thick, and therefore a different feel on the wheel. The rear view camera is pretty standard and visibility at night is clear. The additional headlights in LED on the Premium at BRIGHT! Definitely not getting lost in the dark with those. Gear changes are fast and smooth to the point of not being noticable. Especially in Sports mode, the exhaust tone in the cabin is quite nice. I hope that heaps :-)

Thanks Steven. It still amazes me that reviewers don't go into stuff like this.
As it is basic everyday stuff you do while driving.. What you put down is pretty much perfect.

Couple of adds (I30 SR dc auto), my usb stick music is excellent, the menu options work well and the sound quality is fine, am radio can be problematic in my central coast regional area, fm is fine. I had issues with my windscreen wipers, some shudder, streaking on backstroke, replaced them with top line curved frames from Supercheap Auto, and found the ones that came fitted by Hyundai were straight, not curved! Annoying! The new ones are superb, silent and silky smooth, will be having words with the service guys who said they could find no problems at the one month service... hmmpf! :)

Cheers guys. I have actually picked mine up on Thurs 3rd May 2018.
2017 build, 2018 delivered Phoenix Orange SR Manual. Picked it up as a demo with 3500klms
Have only done about 140ks so far. But all things so far are very good.

I just hired an i30 active and my personal opinion is this: The Satnav (GPS) is one of the best implementations I've seen in any car and that includes more expensive Euros. I'm in Australia and even the voice guidance is in an Australian accent. Also gives you speed camera warnings and lane merge warnings. Also a LOT of customisation which is very surprising at this price point. Excellent!
Air con and heating in the Active was manual, and my only complaint here would be the location of the fan speed adjustment being bit of a reach. The climate control version would eliminate this though. Bluetooth was flawless with my Pixel 2 XL and the factory stereo was well above average for this class and price point. It went pretty well.
Controls, text and layout is extremely clear and easy to understand. The standard Android Auto works very well with the touch screen also.
The steering wheel control layout is one of the best I've come across for this reason: Hyundai have worked out that toggles are by far the easiest way to control volume, cruise etc and I just loved it.
Cruise control maintained speed extremely well even downhill. A lot of more modern systems appear to use the ABS system on descents to maintain the set speed. This one appeared to be no exception.
The information screen on the instrumentation cluster also had far more functionality than I expected for a lower spec car. Turn by turn, instant and average fuel consumption, tyre pressures and also a digital speedo. Really good!
If you are looking for a competent daily driver i'd highly recommend this car. I'm about this close to buying one myself!!
Hope this helps a little :)

I wonder how a slightly modified 1.6 crdi turbo with DCT would go up against this? My mother owns a poverty pack trim (less weight) with CRDI-T 7spd i30 and it's surprisingly quick.
