Really fascinating to hear this. The Jem had layers of complexity and harmonic richness that left the more contemporary guitar in the dust.

@@jefflitchfield4950 it might actually be the pots and capacitors Ibanez used.
      I have a 93' RG450 with the Ibanez V1 S1 V2 pickups and it sounds so similar.
And even if you put the same Dimarzio Evolutions on a different guitar you won't get the sound.

yep I get the same thing on my RG550 Genesis. I swapped out the stock pickups for a DiMarzio X2N (bridge) and air norton (neck) and you will catch harmoics by just holding a note on high G B E strings (plain unwound strings). It's unbelievable...the DiMarzio pickups really are the best passive pickups on the market and I can say that with 100% certainty because I have 22 guitars and they all have Seymour Duncan, DiMarzio or Fishman pickups and only the Dimarzios catch harmonics by just sustaining a note.

I think the Jem has a more natural, organic and 'woody' clean sound; the bridge pickup's magnets have probably died, though. Stick an Iron Gear 'Hot Slag' HB in there and see what you think :) The Kiesel may have more clarity, but it sounds more clinical and distinctly less emotive / expressive to me.

I have a JEM from the late 90's. It has been well played. One thing remarkable about it is its intonation - it seems to stay in tune really well. For example, I took it out of its case the other day after maybe 2 years of not playing (I prefer more "traditional" guitars these days), I strummed an E chord, and the thing was perfectly in tune.

A lot of your heavy patches sound immense, and 3D. Sounds dual passed and hard panned, and Micropitched at times, all together. A very 6L6/V30 vibe. Love the cleans too, a very preamp-direct sound especially with comp. The stutter always makes me smile, uniquely you, Thomas. So many great alternates too, the acoustic Kiesel is charming, that is a guitar I want to own. Ibanez Jem sounds like my Universe, which is an odd one for sure. I always figured it was perfectly named, another universe of sounds. Way different. You get a lot of these questions every stream, which I watch live or just after (depending on wife’s schedule). 😊 A good FAQ video. As always 👍

I have a really old P bass. I have a Carvin BB75 fretless, and a Carvin Icon 6. I've always thought the P bass just has this tone, this feel, this whatever-you-want-to-call-it that the Carvin basses just don't have. Going to guitars, I was planning on ordering a Carvin DC727 back in the day, but my experience with their basses held me back I think. The Carvin basses aren't necessarily "bad", there's just this "Carvin" sound/thing that comes with them. I don't know how else to explain it... But in this excellent video, I do agree with a lot of the other comments that the Ibanez just has a better sound. "Better"? Not sure if that's really the right word, but do prefer the Ibanez. Also, like others have mentioned, pickups can degrade with time, so that's also something to consider when it comes to the output of the Ibanez.

  • @richardwolffe

There's something about playing guitars you've had for a long time. This is actually an unfair comparison, considering that one guitar is brand-new, and the other guitar is over 30 years old. Also the fact that they’re completely different set up. If the Kesel was also setup with HSH, and had a Floyd Rose, then I would say would be a more fair comparison. Although using major effects processing, it’s hard to tell either way. Maybe a difference and pickup Sound.

It’s really hard to say what it is. But sometimes modern metal guitars are really sparkling on high gain stuff but if you play these things clean they are sounding thin in a unpleasant way. Not so the JEM. And that’s the thing I love on a JEM, there is still warmth in clean sounds. It’s not an ultra modern sound but still up to date. Anyway, the Kiesel sounds great and looks cute. I love that top. I think it’s perfect to have both.

you need to put the same pickups in both guitars to see what truly sounds better. i put a pair of fishman in the most screwed up guitar, had cracks in the body, all pickups picked up this terrible flubby sound, put fishman in and this heaping pile of dung sounded great. i had the same kiesel, but with their {kiesel} pickups, and it did not sound too good at all. fishman bring just about any guitar to the zone of epic tonez.

@@McRocklin I would reach out to DiMarzio and see what they suggest. It might put a little ooomph back in.

You are very interesting to sit down and "talk" guitars. Most of the time when I watch videos like this it feels like hanging out :)

Have you tried the new Ibanez Pia’s yet?

Looks like a gravity storm in the bridge on the jem - your low gain sound is very nice - have been listening to Eric Johnson lately his low gain is very cool also - he has about 4 gain stages after his cleans - brilliant player as yourself McRocklin

Collectable I'd take the Jem. As a player I'd take the Kiesel, for sure I'd play it more.

zeus with fishman's sometimes seems like cheating, it's so comfortable to play, but there are certain tones, feels that I prefer to use my prestige, or strat for.

The Jem sounds like the Joe Pass grandad and the Keisel like the young spunker teen

That Jem is NOT lacking in any bite or high end. To me the the Jem sounds a little better

Again, thrashing Ibanez for no good reason. What happens if you put Fishman on the JEM? Get you fingers stuck on the fretboard? :))))

Different era guitars, totally different tools. I have Fishman in all of my newer Ibanez guitars, I’d highly recommend it.

@@McRocklin Agree. Then why compare them? Now that you did, the conclusion is the super-modern Kiesel custom is only modestly better than 30 yo guitar - and that thanks to Fishman. Kinda embarrassing if you ask me...

Modestly better, that’s your conclusion not mine lol. Anyway you’re extremely troll like in your comments, I won’t be replying again.
