Thanks for watching! What other bands should I check out?
invent animate!
rings of saturn plz
Are you and Claire having some beers and doing an xmas stream?
currents
By a thousand deaths fulfilled by Spawn Of Possession fosho dude
I’ve always written my parts to complement what’s already going on in the instrumental, not to take over or overpower, so I’m glad you touched on that
hello goat
JT you guys keep getting better every album!
JT
Love you JT!
Definitely would recommend House of Glass for you. Thanks for checking us out! Big fan of your stuff.
JT what's up brother, I saw you guys in NC with Nothlane, Crystal Lake and Currents. You guys killed it!
House of glass is so hard but fun
Even if I'm not that much into "prog" metalcore as I was 2 years ago, I still listen to House of Glass every few days. This song is insane on so many levels.
You still play Cod?
I would love to hear Dean try to learn "that riff" from Gungrave by ear too. That was crazy how quick he picked this up.
gungrave or snowblood. there's really too many to pick, Jesse is an amazing guitarist. The way he writes in his head is crazy.
This pls ⏫
„that riff“ from Gungrave is one of the best modern metal riffs ever
Or Snowblind both good riffy tracks
Eye of God riff is crazier and fun
dude please do a 4 levels of Erra. Their older stuff is way more technical and I think you would love it. I am surprised you've never heard of them though, they are metalcore og's and one of the only successful metal bands we have over here in birmingham alabama lol
Fellow Bham love 🫀
Came here to say this
Is Tuscaloosa close enough to count? Cuz Gideon is from there and they're fuckin awesome.
@@EYOUTz1993 nah I don’t count tuscaloosa with bham. if we’re talking alabama as a state we do have erra, gideon, no cure, etc… I saw gideon for the first time here in march and they were insane. caught a drumstick and a setlist
It makes me feel old to hear a band whose first album was released in 2011 to be called a 'metalcore og' haha. Not knocking it though, happy the band exists and people dig them and everything, just after my time I guess :)
hello Dean Lamb, guitarist from Archspire
Like others have said…definitely do 4 levels with Erra. This is probably the most simple song they have guitar wise. They have lots of cool and interesting riffs throughout their entire discography
I'm a big Erra fan, I don't know how to label them. Modern melodic metalcore? I don't know, but I'm a fan. Snowblood is hands down my favorite song they do. Maybe a little more up your ally
@@thebwolfesp I love everything from Erra. From their first EP’s to this newest single. I’m just hoping Dean checks out some of their other stuff that’s a little more fun on guitar!
i've always called them progressive metalcore@@thebwolfesp
i was like damn why pale iris of all the songs to try!! def the easiest.
ERRA is one of my favorite bands in metalcore right now. The fact that Jesse plays those riffs and sings over them is insane
Wait what he’s the vocalist and guitarist?!???! ( the odd timing is what has me in dis belief lol)
@@terogates1 he does the clean singing, then JT just does the harsh vocals. Rhythms under the clean vocals aren’t too bad on this track, but some of their other stuff there’s some crazy stuff going on under his vocals which he does flawlessly live. Fantastic guy too. Got to meet the band last year
@@panterarocks9326 they've been my favorite band for a while, finally got to see them in Pittsburgh in January this year and they are even more mindblowing in person. Jesse is super impressive and JT sounds amazing live!
So facts. They were the band that got me into metal
agreed. and their earlier work is even more insane for him to be playing while singing too. hes a legend.
Yes! You gotta do a 5 Levels episode with Jesse. Erra has so many tasty riffs. Especially in their older stuff.
Yeah, Andromeda riffs are fcking crazy.
would love to see that
Erra filled the void that architects left in me
4 levels of metalcore with Erra would be sick. They have some bangers. Snowblood, gungrave, drift all slap
Never can go wrong with some Erra. Jesse Cash is an underrated artist imo
for sure!
He's an animal. I've known their family for a hot minute, and they've always been such good people. Jesse is an animal.
Yeah, solo project ghost atlas coming out with an album wooooo
ERRA fucking rip and they're fantastic live. super nice guys to boot. worth checking out all their music! Also, congrats on 100K Subs Dean!
Always love metal nice guys! Also, Erra is fucking fun!
Erra is also one of the rare metalcore bands that have great variation throughout their discography, all their releases have something different to offer. Augment and Impulse are a pile of great technical riffs and licks and still soso fresh, Drift is for the feels and the newer releases are for the more straight forward head bangable stuff.
LOVE the shirt Dean...I don't know anyone else who knows Stortregn, glad to see one of my favorite musicians supporting them.
Stortregn is one of the best bands out right now. So good.
Riffage on this song is pretty relaxed honestly compared to other Erra. Try Scorpion Hymn, that gets the ‘Shuggah on
This format is BRILLIANT - I would _love_ to see more of this, from you and honestly from others
I'm a big ERRA fan and watching go through one of their songs figuring it out and commenting has been great.
Dean check out their first full length. More technical
Dude I was stoked when I saw this video. I would love to see a 4 levels of death metal
With Jesse! ERRA has some insane riffs
Love that you don’t cut your videos and you are actually learning it real time👍🏻 makes me feel like I don’t suck so bad💀
And beautiful Kiesel by the way
You have to listen to their first album "Impulse". Those songs are all way more technical and a complete 180 from Pale Iris. The first album would definitely be more your vibe.
Hyped to get more Dean attempts to learn
The X factor of Erra for me is Jesse (Lead Vocals and Guitar) doing insane tapping riffs while singing the insanely catchy vocal melodies.
ERRA has some dope riffs ngl. especially back in their older work. the riffs then were even more complex and sick
Jesse is such an incredible guitarist, especially having to sing cleans on top of it
MORE OF THIS CONTENT PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!
PLEASE LOOK AT THEIR OLDER STUFF 🙏🙏
As a fan of archspire and metalcore, it's fun to see Dean learn this, I don't listen to Erra very much but this opens the door to see Dean play other stuff.
This was cool, kinda wish your introduction to them hadn't been one of the simplest songs they've written tho. Their back catalog is so fun, would love to hear your thoughts on songs like Hybrid Earth, Eye of God, Gungrave, etc.
"it seems like everyones stoked on this band, and i would like to also be stoked about this band", is such a great mindset keep gatekeeping out of the community
4 levels with ERRA needs to happen!
Nothing but love on this video. Love this band. Love your band. Didn't realize I wasn't subscribed. I am now. All the love in the world from worst case Ontario.
They definitely have way more "guitar-driven" songs you should check out, like Gungrave, Snowblood, Spirits Away, Skyline, Alpha Seed, etc.
Glad this finally came into fruition. Tbh this is probably ERRA’s least technical song they’ve ever put out. Would love to see you check out some stuff from their self titled. 4 levels or ERRA would be super sick too and super entertaining
I wish he had picked a song from when Alan was in the band, that man wrote such beautifully awesome and distinct riffs. I would love to see Dean react to something like Dementia.
ERRA's first two albums are bangers! Miss that old lineup
Watching one of my favorites playing a song from another favorite is amazing. They have tons of complicated riffs in their catalog, would love to see four levels of ERRA.
i loved the songwriting discussion at the end. especially from the perspective of someone who plays a crazy genre like tech death. nice video!
What you said about the difference between how vocal music and instrumental music affects the audience is right on. Personally I think instrumental music is generally more popular with musicians.
love your analytical approach to this stuff. its fun to try and figure out why a thing sounds the way it does and why people like it, i bet the bands writing sessions are fascinating.
Car Bomb next Dean!
ERRA is sic! as someone who loves tech death, I can def get down with these guys. I also am not a fan of melodic singing but, somehow these guys pull it off!! If Im not mistaken the the singer/guitarist(Jessie) isnt a big fan of heavy music lol. its weird how they make it work. I was a fan before JT and when I heard him for the first time, it blew me away. Scorpion Hymn and drift are my favs, and so much more! They're whole catalog is worth a listen!
Yeah Jesse has kind of drifted away from heavier music and you notice it in the songs. Pre-Drift stuff was still clearly heavily influenced by Misery Signals and it was pretty heavy.
Hearing that "mathy" riff as you called it immediately made me think Children of Bodom's "In Your Face" intro riff.
Yoo love the Stortregn shirt ! Nice to see a kinda local band to me getting recognition !
Breach is my Favorite guitar playthrouht ever Shadow Autonomus too
I can’t believe you got the guitarist from archspire on your channel!
I think this type of content but maybe cut so its a bit more concise would be super enjoyable. Really love getting your perspective when you learn other bands stuff.
The speed in which you learnt those riffs was incredible. It was super cool watching you work your method.
I love watching the process of learning riffs/songs - it helps me realize that if I just keep at it, I can go from hitting the wrong note half the time to playing it perfectly (or well enough to sound good!)
Thanks for putting stuff like this out there, Dean. 🖤
I need Dean to go back to the early stages of Erra to really do them justice. Augment and Impulse are fucking incredible albums!
Great song and nice to see how you learn stuff ;)
You also seem to enjoy the process, more of this!
I feel better knowing one of the gnarliest guitarists out there learns songs the same way I do: replaying the same part 300 times, flubbing it over and over
honestly kinda surprised you havent heard of em since their ogs but glad your finding them cause jesse is like you an incredible wizard on the axe and the voice of a damn angel
Love it when I see these boys get support. I've known them since they were in high school. A few of them used to be in a band called By Blood and Iron. I haven't seen most of these guys in years but I did run into Alex at a bar in bham a couple years ago. They've come a long way since my band used to play youth centers and small venues with them. I couldn't more more proud.
literally the band that helped me level up my playing to not dogshit playing haha, I would like to think that I am a lot better than I was before erra
Edit: ALSO you should totally get the guitarist jesse cash (the guitarist for erra) on here for 4 levels of metal or somethin
i wanna see dean learn house of glass by erra that song still fucks me to this day tbh
Monolith is a banger too, i bet youre going to love these guys whats crazy is that Jessie also sings while playing those crazy guitar parts, check out some of his playthroughs he has on youtube. Ghost Atlas is his side project band also has song bangers.
Just saw the title and I’m so excited 😆!!!
God these videos are fun
I use them to push myself and Learn the bands
Just finished learning follow your ghost and you’re play through of the solo really helped me ❤❤
Same, I was playing it by ear and could tell i was WAY wrong even tho I'd watched the official playthrough but the way Dean takes you through the entire thing slowly was much more effective, he's a hell of a teacher!
@@RoosterOvenMittz6969 I know man
He’s amazing 🤩
So glad you gave Erra a chance, I love their music, a couple other bands I think you would like for their riffs is After the Burial, Born of Osiris, Currents, Veil of Maya, Oceans Ate Alaska, Within the Ruins, The Voynich Code, Strapping Young Lad, FOAD, and I know a lot of people may disagree with my last one but For Today. Any riff from from the albums Portraits and Breaker by For Today are sick.
Currents drown the listener in an ocean of depression...but sooooo good.
I’m pretty sure Dean is familiar with Strapping Young Lad lol I’m glad you discovered them though
@@Tyler-zf2gj I figured he would have heard them before, but they still have some sick riffs. My cousin showed them to me back in like 2001-2002, and I remember when the music video for Love? came out, I loved Evil Dead and then that video made me love SYL even more.
It's really interesting watching someone who plays tech death learning (admittedly, also technical) metalcore. There's so much crossover in the guitar techniques used in both styles, but metalcore has such a heavy focus on syncopation and tends to be more rhythm-oriented vs. the raw stamina and dexterity required for tech death.
This was a great breakdown of why a song sounds interesting to the listener. Definitely would love to see more of these! I'd like to echo the rest of the comments with a 4 Levels spin off. Jesse is an amazing guitarist and has come up with some great riffs throughout their discography. ERRA sounds the same but different with each release and they are one of my favorites.
Hey Dean...you should check out these ERRA albums: "Impulse" and "Augment"....respectively
Thank you for always motevating me to practice and learn new riffs outside of the comfort zone. You really help people get better at guitar and being excited to play and learn new things. Thanks a lot dean! Love your Videos.
ERRA'S Breach has some of the coolest riffs i have ever heard
their recent self-titled album is a masterpiece imo. check the whole thing out.
We need more of this crossover. I don't really have a favourite band but sometimes I wonder if it is Erra. Snowblood is definitely a track for you to check out. Tech riffs plus a soaring chorus plus a brilliant solo.
I saw Erra at the first show I ever attended in San Diego, CA. They played with Within the Ruins and my favorite local band at the time Adestria.
As others have said, you should for sure do 4 levels of Erra!!
(Also check out Adestria’s “Chapters” album. RIP)
Really can't get into music like this... I've heard this song a thousand times before.
I'd love to watch you try out some Sikth!
Damn you are from Archspire. RESPECT .. I thought you were just a musical content creator with a decent number of YT followers.
never would expect you to learn erra! jesse cash is so sick!
I would really recommend the song "Rebirth" from their album Augment. It's one of my favorites.
This was a really good video. Assumed it was going to be your take on 'reaction' videos, then it became a 'watch dean learn a song in just a couple minutes', then developed into a very interesting look at what music is, what goals you can have as an artist, etc.
Keep up the great stuff, Dean
Really like the structure of this video.
I learned from trey Xaviers channel that the best way to write a great song is to take the part you have and modify it a bit to create the next part, that way it's more cohesive because it has enough similarity to the previous riff that it fits. As opposed to through composed where every part is different and you don't repeat anything
This is great, not a lot of people can do this type of thing, or would to different genres of metal, awesome to watch.
Hey Dean! You should really do 4 level of death metal Persefone! Would love it
This checked a lot of boxes for me, I've been bumping Erra since their first full-length. His clean vocals leave more of an impression in person, they're wild.
Check out Unprocessed, they have some wild riffs in a that djent/metalcore-ish area
THE NOTE PAD!!!! I LOVE IT. My friend makes fun of me every time i blow that thing open to learn a chug chug part.
Impulse and Augment are two of the most incredible albums I have ever heard. Their new stuff is great, but those first two albums are untouchable.
Love the last bit, bud. Great insight.
Nobody mentioned the shirt yet? Now that's a great band!
it's crazy how fast dean learn those riff, pure talent 🤘🏻🤘🏻
You have to be able to feel the groove coming and a song needs to circle back home just like a good riff. Those are key elements for a banger for me
You must check new Persefone track called One Word, I promise they will blow your mind apart, also it's so nice to see when member of your favorite TDM band meet you favorite (and best of all) metalcore band, great video, mate!
Those first time listens are so cool
I have seen ERRA live, they are very good
Erra is amazing. Just discovered them last year.
The tried and true strategy of going "bunna bunna dehhh bunna dunnaa" til you figure out the riff, never fails
the synth or guitar riff that comes in behind all the other guitars sounds like a protest the hero song to me, which is awesome
Let's go! Summer of 21 was DOMINATED by self titled for me. Immediately went back and listened to the rest of the discography.
Can't wait to see where they go
you need to speak with John Browne about riff writing. he says that you mostly need one riff. through messing around with octaves or reusing the rythm in another context you get the rest of the song
Hi Dean, nice fucking shirt.Stortregn is amazing.greets from switzerland
I noticed that shirt as well. One of my favorite bands.
I feel like most channels would do a 'react' video like this for a quick video that hits the 10m mark but this extended video is super interesting
Thumbs up for a “Dean learns other sub genres of metal riffs”. So awesome
Would love to see you look at vitriol, Kyle is a beast and the debut album was an absolute monster and the new album is about to drop..!! 🤘🏻🔥🔥🤘🏻
Would love to see you do some more ERRA, this is probably one of their least technical songs!
Genuine question, Dean: Why the 'not a fan' of melodic vocals in metal? I think it is one of the things that set metal bands apart from each other best. Sure there is overall tone, song writing & structure, etc, but when a band can pull of melodic vocals in metal and make it have the same/similar intensity as the music, I find it awesome. ERRA being one of the top bands to do it, also.
If you’re up for it, really any song from The Amanuensis by Monuments is great. Atlas, I the Destroyer, and Quasimodo are my favorites off of it
I was not expecting this but holy shit I’m pleasantly surprised! I fucking Love ERRA!!
