How Safe Are Kids on Seat Belt-Less School Buses?

- Bryson and his younger brother Rigel were headed to their first day of school when police say a car drifted across the lane and crashed into their school bus. There were no seat belts on the bus. Sadly, one of their classmates died. It’s a tragedy their mom, Brittany Fisher, believes seat belts could have prevented. Seat-belt safety expert Melissa Dobbs invited Inside Edition to a special testing facility to see how violent bus crashes can get when kids aren’t buckled up safely.
It should be common sense for school/public buses to have proper safe seatbelts.
Well I'm sorry to say it but it's either this or gun control, you can't have both
I can only imagine how many kids will get trapped in a really bad bus accident where there is smoke. The seatbelt will become their death trap. Yeah, definitely seatbelts. Survival of the fittest in the end. 😂🎉

If money is the problem then maybe the ones that travel in areas where the speed limit is low can be lower priority.
They don't have money to put seat belts on the bus. But the super attendant makes three hundred thousand dollars plus a year.
If you want a good superintendent they need to be paid their worth.

What kind of question is that kids shouldn't be on a school bus or any kind of vehicle without seatbelts PERIOD
Picture a loaded school bus with elementary kids landing in a lake or large body of water, maybe upside down. Do you really expect those young kids, many of them panicked, to undo all those belts in time?
Would about a fire? Do you think that kids could figure that out? And also some kids might be to small for some seatbelts and the might get hanged by the seatbelt.

Same here in the 80's. Your seatbelt is your mom's right hand. Airport shuttle buses don't have seatbelts. Don't think Greyhound buses have seatbelts.
I survived on various school buses without seat belts without any accidents and incidents all around me. Every vehicle needs seat belts to save lives
I must’ve gotten really lucky, ‘cause every school bus I’ve been in has had no seatbelts, and no accidents occurred.
the seatbelts don't determine whether or not there is an accident. just the outcome
I walked or cycled every school was within 3 miles
You were probably a lot tougher than today's soft kids too.
Yeah me too but I remember a few times that my high school has busses overfilled with students that kids couldn’t fit 2 to a seat. It has to be 3 to a seat and squished. Thing is : 90% of the US traffic is composed of Automatic Transmission cars and despite being that easy to drive some random morrons keeps crashing on school buses !

I totally agree as I am a school bus driver myself however the problem is if the bus were to catch fire these students have less than 2 minutes to evacuate the bus and that could cause some chaos with all the panic trying to get the seat belts undone
I see the people's points about fires, but I feel like a crash on the road is way more likely to occur than a fire causing students to be unable to unbuckle in panic.

Studies have shown bus fires aren’t the most common bus incident, injuries from crashes have happened in larger numbers than bus fires. And even if the bus doesn’t have belts, there have been bus fires that have killed students. A fire suppression system would be a safer option to add than to not have seatbelts. And in the worst case you can design them with an automatic release system that activates shortly after the crash.
I think you could keep a pair of scissors or something with the driver in the first aid kit in case that happens.
Or winds up in a lake or river…upside down.
@smorris281 bc that happens daily just like crashes do
What if the bus doesn't catch on fire but gets into a collision? 🤔
And yet schoolboards will spend thousands on football lockers and gymnasiums yet somehow they're always magically underfunded for text books, teachers pay and safety 😂
Yeah, when I was a kid and had to ride in school busses without seat belts, I was always confused and worried, but thankfully I always had good drivers who never crashed or stopped suddenly or drove fast.
Risk of seatbelts on school buses, if in accident or even hard breaking from driver could cause students to choke or get whiplash from its tightness. Involved side impact could also involve whiplash or choking. If to be on its side or upside down, it may be hard to reach or find the seat belt buckle, which is dangerous in critical situations if stuck or upside down.
Risk without seatbelts if in accident or hard breaking could involve slamming forwards into seat ahead or danger of students falling out of seat or whiplash. If it's a side impact the students could be in danger falling or get flung to one end and if sideways or upside down they may fall to one end with risk of serious injury like concussions.
Both ways have pros and cons with certain outcomes in situations depending on the danger. The students and bus driver and others on the road will have a positive or negative impact to either prevent or lessen result.
No seatbelts + accidents = lawsuit
Ive always wondered why school busses had no seat belts. I always feel unsafe in a school bus with no seat belts. I never got used to it, and im graduated now
"81 fatal wrecks" Yeah that includes deaths in the OTHER vehicles, and pedestrians hit by the bus. Shoddy reporting at BEST. And they even show that someone has to buckle the kids in. Who's going to UNBUCKLE THEM in a fire??? The FACTS show that for the hundreds of millions of miles school busses travel, the compartmentalization and padding is safe. And seat belts won't make a difference if the bus is hit by a semi...
So the kids should opt to die by collision rather than dying by fire...
“Unbuckle them in a fire?” they can make a system that unbuckles seatbelts automatically.
“Other cars and pedestrians.” there have been more incidents of crashed and hijacked School Buses more than you think.
For all those saying all buses should have seatbelts, you must have never been on a bus that catches on fire. They go up in flames way faster than everyone could get out of their belt and off the bus!!
Bruh wtf, our school always just said not to wear seatbelts on a schoolbus because it was "safer". Always thought this was true but could never wrap my head around it.
This is just now a concern I’ve been saying this since I was in grade school
I lost 4 classmates on a band trip years ago. It was a charter but most of them got crushed or suffered from chest injuries. All in the back. Miss them. RIP guys
they need to make buses have a roll cage not a seat belt
School buses should not have seatbelts at all… if there is a fire 🔥 it is going to take way longer for all those 5 year old kids to get out of the bus in time and if the bus is upside down all those kids will be trapped in their seats
Definitely makes the discussion a bit more complicated to navigate. I do see the point of the seatbelt discussion though
What’s the frequency of school buses that catch on fire than accidents caused by driver error?
That same argument applies to cars too. Why have a seatbelt if your car catches fire?
I guess the question is, what's worse flipping and be trapped in the seat upside down, or flipping without the belts and being tossed around like a pinball, and how likely is a fire opposed to a common road collision? Seatbelts have never been absolute, they mitigate general accidents, there's extreme scenarios where seatbelt or no fatality is inevitable, counter arguing with specific situations in mind does not eliminate the advantages of seatbelts altogether.
@@thelordshiro does your car have 84 kids on it and only 1 adult?
I remember in elementary school asking about why there weren’t seatbelt and I was told something like “it was safer because if something happened you want to be able to get off the bus as soon as possible and seatbelts can trap you” which as a small child made sense but now naaaaaaah if I have any children I’d want them to have seatbelts it’s insane not to
No matter what accidents happened that end up harming and killing people, it's always because of money, man, for the safety of others, people aren't willing to pay for safety measures. It's always money.

I work on a bus and the worst part is even when we do have seatbelts due to decades of not enforcing wearing them no one cares. Nowadays wearing a seatbelt is considered a punishment for kids who can’t stay seated instead of a safety device.
Also as other point out it’s due to the lack of bus aids who could unbuckle small children in a fire emergency. Busses catch fire very quickly so every second counts.

Having seat belts in a school bus is a catch 22 situation. A bus in flames can be fully engulfed in under 5 minutes. Depending on the cause and reason trying to evacuate a bus while trying to unbuckle students will cause even more fatalities then a crash like this. It was never about money. Don't believe that it's about the cost.
Every kids should buckle up, elementary, middle and high schoolers... everyone
0:02 Seat belts were required to be installed for over 50 years, but people weren’t required to wear them until the 1980’s to 1990’s depending on the state.
Another reason for no seatbelts on buses is because the smoke alone can kill you in less than 2 minutes if a bus were to catch fire which is just as likely if not more likely than an accident happening. There would be panic and I could see lots of elementary school students especially not being able to get out of their seatbelt fast enough.
During my elementary school I was on a school bus without any set belts I was safe there were no a bus accident it depends how many kids survives on a bus accident some of them aren’t lucky they didn’t make it home from school as their parents expected it it’s breaks my heart when kids die on school bus accident 🥺😭💔
When I was younger in school in the 80's no seat belt on the bus was a result of the children not being trapped by seat belt in an accident 😳 they didn't require any to prevent children from being able to escape 😳 but I thought bus should have been equipped with seat belts 😊
We supposed to “protect” the kids not have them unprotected with NO SEAT BELTS on School Busses.

@@darkraiking680Ours have seatbelts, but do you think people wear them? Nah they don’t 😐 the bus drivers tell us to, but these brats won’t listen. If the bus has seatbelts, the same result would have happened.
Damn, in middle school in my school district FUSD (Fremont, California) They upgraded all us the buses and gave us seatbelts, but it wasn't mandatory for our bus to put on the seatbelts because our route had to pick up the most students from 4 different schools-high school, middle school, and 2 different elementary schools for our neighborhood route. We were sitting up to 3-4 highschoolers in a seat. The front of the bus had up to 4-5 elementary students.
The school I went to they would crame three students in the seats and they still do. So seat belts at our school is a jock
The reason why i think most school busses don't have seatbelts is for the evacuation of the bus. Say the bus caught on fire, they want that bus empty in 90 seconds, as fires spread quickly. Also, if the bus somehow ended up underwater, well, water is gonna fill up that bus quickly. So i think they didn't add seatbelts because of that in the busses early days. While seatbelts would be great, as one other in the comments pointed out, if someone has to buckle them in, someone is gonna have to unbuckle them in a emergency. So i think thats gonna have to be figured out and streamlined before a bus with seatbelts cost alot of lives cause they couldn't unbuckle all in time.
I go on a school bus everyday and our bus driver she's drive safely but I swear we just like go back and forth on the bus we need them please
There were a few cases where our buses did seat 3 kids to a seat, so I could see how maybe additional kids crammed on a bus wouldn’t matter whether there were seatbelts or not, but you never can be too safe 🤷♂️
In my old schools buses, some seats had seatbelts and others didn’t. We made jokes about who would survive a crash and who wouldn’t.
I've never understood why the US uses bespoke schoolbus designs - which have had safety concerns for decades (remember the Carrolton bus crash?). Why not just use standard city buses or intercity buses?
People not in the school bus transportation Field don’t realize that it only takes three minutes for a school bus to be engulfed in flames. Some of our buses have an 81 student capacity. 81 kids one driver one seat belt cutter. Either way you spin it, there’s no solution. They’re either at risk of an accident or at risk of getting burned alive because they can’t get their seatbelts off in time.
Then make it where it resists the fire for a little longer 🤷♂️
What they forget to mention is school buses do not have cushiony interiors or airbags. So if a child wearing a seatbelt sat next to the window in the bus at 0:26, you can bet their head would smash again the glass. Seatbelts aren’t the only thing used to save lives. As for the testing video, that was a head on collision. No side crash testing. Car seats have raised sides to help keep the occupant held in place during a collision so they don’t slide around like you would on the flat bench seats found in buses. Seatbelts would help, but if you really cared, you would add airbags and better retention seats as well.
Let’s also not forget rear impacts. The seats go all the way to the back of the bus. If a semi rear ended a school bus at high speeds that would be catastrophic as well. You need a crumple zone in front and back. For cars it’s called the engine and the trunk. (Bonet for those ppl).
There no way kids would behave on putting their seatbelt on the bus. When I was going to school kids were yelling and cursing and getting out of their seats. It a nightmare! I do agree there should be a safety seatbelt but if they were added on a bus then good luck who ever is the bus driver!
Just put the freaking selt belts on the busses needed for decades. It's common sense.

That but had lap belts but it didn’t help that the seats were attached to the walls of the bus. People still got hurt including me straining my back. It was scary and my parents never let me do that fundraiser again 😅

Depending on the collision it could be better or worse to wear a seat belt.

they have school buses with seatbelts, i’m 23 & i remember on long field trips like to the jamestown settlement in elementary school we’d have them in VA. i do think all of them need them though.
I think another reason it's not easy to make all the children wear seat belts because there's no one to watch. While adding seat belts they also need a seat belt warning system in front of the driver telling them if there's any kid who has unbuckled.
They went flying. But if they had a seatbelt a majority of this kids would have slit throughts (Minor damage) or really bad chest damage

Once when I was a kid on the way home in our school bus we had an accident. I never saw or heard what happened, but as we were stopping after hitting a car or almost did, there was so much force everyone was pulled towards the front. I fell into the middle isle, luckily I managed to hold onto the seat legs. A girl in highschool tripped over me then I think fell on her back but it was bad enough an ambulance had to carry her out of the bus on one of those beds. No one else got hurt like that thankfully
Must be an awful scene for the first responders. Not only would the firefighters have to figure out how to go about extricating 20-30 kids, but the paramedics would have to also triage all those kids since there simply isnt enough paramedics or ambulances to transport them all at once
Amazingly, I used to hang out in the back part of our station wagon on our very very long family trips. And, even the short ones ie visiting relatives on Christmas. Would play with toys or just fall asleep.

Seat belts in school buses needs to be mandatory to prevent injuries or worse.

You see, the problem with seatbelts on busses can be dangerous for anyone. They need to be safe in case there’s a fire, broken ceiling, and sinking in water. And the seatbelt might get stuck.
