    I never refer to Morgan’s and Peace Dollars as junk silver. I simply call them Morgan’s and Peace Dollars. They are silver dollars and they are in a category all by themselves.

      I’ve never bought a Morgan, but I bought 25 peace dollars in VG condition. I may have paid too much at $35 apiece when spot was around $22. They came in a tube and we’re almost Unc condition. That said, I polished a couple to a glossy finish and they are beautiful. Anyone who thinks I should never have done that is a moron. I also polished a bunch of junk silver that looks better than new. The ones that aren’t polished I call junk. The ones that are beautiful I call constitutional and carry some with me at all times to teach people what money is. You should see some of my war nickels. They went from being something you wouldn’t want to touch to something you could show off proudly. I do not recommend war nickels tho.

    The problem is with the term Junk, as well as the fact that all 90% U.S. coinage is always moving toward a numismatic position. 1921 Morgans and 1922 & 23 Peace dollars in the medium to low quality condition are almost all considered to be classic "Junk Silver", but most Silver dollars that are in medium to high quality condition are not. This all has to do with their relative supply & condition. Truthfully, any American U.S. coinage that is pre-65 90% Silver probably shouldn't be considered "Junk Silver" anymore because it's such a moving target, and given the circumstances into which we are headed, it will continue to permanently disappear from the market for as far out into the future as one can possibly reasonably see. They simply aren't going to make more of it, so this is an exercise in splitting hairs that are steadily disappearing. Half of my stack is 90% or Constitutional Silver. That is how I collect or stack it. I don't look at any of it as "Junk Silver" anymore. Once I passed 500 ounces, I began to spend a little more to pick up those pieces with less wear but without being key dates or specifically highly collectible. Now, the only distinction I make is between "Constitutional Silver" and "Numismatic Silver". The term "Junk Silver" just doesn't have that much meaning anymore, given the direction that 90% is moving. It won't be too many more years where there simply isn't such a thing as "Junk Silver" that has its low premium that it had in years past. More 90% gets melted every single year, so I wouldn't worry about making these kinds of distinctions for the most part. I would simply try to purchase whatever was available, being careful to stay away from truly collectible and slabbed varieties. Those are for the true hobbyists who either don't care or don't understand what is happening in the world.

      Very well said. As the years pass these 90% silver coins are only becoming more and more valuable. Thank you for commenting. I do appreciate it. Have a great weekend.

    I love them both! These are where the “hobby” of my stacking comes in because I will pick up a few Morgans and Peace dollars in VF to AU condition at my LCS for a reasonable premium. I give them a washing with dish soap and warm water to reduce the grime, and then into the Air-Tite and tube they go! I like looking at them from time to time simply for my own enjoyment of that fantastic history! How many people handled this coin? What did they spend it on? What were their lives like in the 1890s or 1920s when the coin first appeared? Love to speculate!
    I will pass these down to my kids or future grandkids someday along with a talk about appreciating history.

    As part of my silver stack, I have some junk silver. I also have a tube of Morgan dollars and a tube of Peace dollars in surprisingly good condition (especially because when I purchased them, there was no special premium on them, just normal run-of-the-mill prices). I was always told that silver dollars are not really considered "junk silver" even though the coins are part of the same vintage as our more typical junk silver coins. After all, they're 90 percent silver like the rest. My understanding has always been that silver dollars are classified and priced differently (even if they don't have much numismatic value). Unfortunately, I still don't know what the magic formula is for at least roughly determining the value of silver dollars. I bought them because I like them, plain and simple.

      I believe the trick is to get the same premiums that dealers charge. This is where peer to peer works best. I think it is more fair that way. Just my opinion. Thank you for the comment.

    NO, Absolutely not junk. I could never figure out why people called it that. It has silver value and historical value. If I have a choice between a Morgan or peace dollar and a silver round for the same price I will choose constitutional every time. I have a Morgan dollar that I KNOW for a fact my Great grandfather touched, that will never happen with a silver round. And now you know the rest of the story. 😂.

      @@CashAndCoinsYT I have to give credit to Paul Harvey the journalist. After every news report he did he would say”and now you know the rest of the story”. Everything else is from me. My father left me about 100 silver dollars when he died to pass down to his heirs when they were born. So far I have passed them down thru his 9 Great Grandkids. Something for his descendants to know that he touched. ♥️

    I don't know if Morgan and Peace dollars would be considered junk silver. They are larger silver coins. I suppose you could consider beat up or higher mintage Morgan or Peace dollars that are not in mint state or BU to be junk.

  • @goldmaple5290
    @goldmaple5290 Год назад +1

    How do I consider something junk ? If it's worn out, the date is quite common and the condition is lower than BU then it's junk. If it has toning, or scratches on it, it's junk. Cash and Coins, most of the silver that exists is junk. There are only few diamonds in the rough.
