      This was a terrific telepic from HBO. Very prescient today, given what's going on now. So my question to you is this: how do I recommend this to family members who might otherwise dismiss this as being too gay? There's alot of gay themes at the surface level, but I see alot of things beneath the surface that affects everyone in general. I see in Joe the same set of self-denial and refusal to accept culpability in their role in electing Donald Trump. I am so pissed at these people who are now having buyer's remorse merely a month into Trump's presidency, as if his wreckless predilictions were unknown for the past 40 years.

      jstephenj The final scene between Joe and Louis - where they fight about the decisions Joe has written as a clerk for a conservative judge - is one of the most poignant regarding the fundamental differences between liberals and conservatives. Louis is enraged at Joe’s hypocrisy and the suffering he’s caused; Joe sees his decisions as theoretical and therefore irrelevant to his relationship with Louis. When Louis says “Hey, you love me? FUCK YOU” I always think of how conservatives just don’t get it and seemingly can’t get it... They cannot see beyond themselves, they’re incapable of real sympathy, and they see these life-and-death issues as simple intellectual disagreements.

    What does he mean when he uses the word “ephemera”?

    • @victorr3554
      @victorr3554 Год назад +5

      He's essentially dismissing Joe's moral objections to his request (demand, really) as piddling, insubstantial & inane in the grand scheme of things. Basically, power vs morality; morality is (ostensibly) important to Joe but means nothing to Roy who values power above all else. So Roy views Joe's reluctance on moral grounds to embrace the power he's offering as stupid and myopic. Roy feels that Joe is throwing away the opportunity of a lifetime over something as trifling and "ephemeral" as his morality.

      Buchanan had a sort of "oh my god, they were ROOMMATES" type relationship with William Rufus King. They lived together and attended social functions together for ten years. People who knew them sometimes referred to them as "Aunt Fancy and Miss Nancy." There is speculation about whether they were romantically involved or just really close bachelor friends, but some people believe their nieces destroyed letters that would have proven a more intimate relationship. IMO if Buchanan was gay, he was about as out as you could be in the 1830's.

      Al Pacino just has a way of over doing it too much sometimes ... he needs to be more subtle .

      @@gardensofthegods Exactly, if you watch Roy Cohn's interviews (like the gore Vidal debate for example) it's quite clear that Roy was extremely calm and level headed when arguing with people, not to say that he never had outburst or raised his voice when the cameras weren't around but I think he was a bit more subtle with it which to me would be a lot scarier than Al Pacino's version. I could imagine Roy being more like Mr Burns than Al's depiction.
