@@RamseyDewey I can't help but ask; were you treated for TBI? The science around diagnosis and treatments have come a long way in the last several years, with more attention being put on it in high-impact sports. Sleeplessness can exacerbate symptoms of even minor concussions; I read a scientific journal that said patients can need extra sleep for up to 18 months after a TBI, as the brain takes longer to heal than many other injuries.

    regarding the dogs:
They look around nervously, because pooping puts them in a vulnerable position to predators etc. The dog is unable to run away or fight back while they are squatting down to do their business. It is very similar to the idiom of "getting caught with your pants down".

Was of a mind to comment a similar thing, another thing to consider is the pungency of what they are dropping makes them very trackable. Since a lot of predators and other dogs have a powerful, reliable sense of smell, poop is basically a highly inconvenient beacon that gives away the dog's location both during and after dropping it. Its also why you see a lot of dogs either eat it or kick dirt over it when they're done, to try to remove or cover up the scent.

It's super difficult to set up something like this for the first time and manage to get it fair and safe.
And a key element is criticism to improve.
I think the biggest issue was 1. Not having clear and consistent rules
    2. Letting the participants know what the goal of the scenario is
    3. Regulating the intensity of the fights. Either letting everyone know that there will be high intensity, so they can protect themselves accordingly OR have guys attack that can actually control their intensity

Really interesting to hear you talk about the intensity and psychological distress of the events. In LARP what they've found that some of the more emotionally intense LARPs (like the one where you role-play having a family member need cancer treatment and what not, though it can happen in other larps) folks were getting distressed to the point where it was having adverse affects on their mental health outside the game, a phenomenon that's become known as bleed. I felt like there were going to be similar problems with the scenarios in the Ultimate Self Defence Championships when I first heard about the types of events they were going to run. What I noticed during the years is the big difference between professionals (Athletes/ Coaches) and hobbyists (Recreational fighters/self-defense classes) is the approach to safety and injury. For the first, safety is key and injury is a big thing that can slow down (or finish) a career. For the second, safety is something you talk about, but always struggle to enforce while injuries are badges of honor due to the "cool" factor of a tough guy.
I hope that for season 2 the approach will be more professional!

I admire you so much Ramsay. Love the work you do here in RUclips, and your vision about Martial Arts, self defense, and life in general. I really felt when you said about how spooky is to forget things in that level and about seeing your grandmother suffer from dementia, my grandfather did it as well, I'm really glad this place here can help you remember and register for yourself but for your kids as well.
About the Movie Teather thing, I think the referees they wanted you to stop the situation at all. So as you have seem that she was the provoker don't let her get back to him, or at least take in consideration that possibility. She problably saw the opportunity to go back to violence so she took it.
I believe that the responsibility was not yours because you were the "man in the situation", but because you were being tested.
    I see three patterns:
    - Identify the provoker, that you did really fast.
    - Do not let the situation escalate
    - Do not give the opportunity to the provoker to go back in the situation.
Speaking (sadly) from experience, sometimes you really can't give any space to the provoker to get back in the situation, because he or she will want to go back in it and escalate it to violence... =\

I've said it before on other videos of the series that, indeed, the scoring criteria was a bit wonky, and some of the challenges could be better designed, but overall I think it was a very worthy watch, and there was a lot of food for thought it in. I'm seeing other people saying that the knife challenge was bad (one little nick and you're dead) and I agree with that sentiment, but for me the worst part of that challenge is that, before anybody going into it, it was clear nobody was going to survive it (20 seconds against a knife attacker without being able to run away is basically a crapshoot where you have to get extremely lucky to survive), and it felt like a waste of your time, and viewers' time.

You're correct, the knife test was BS if you consider the competition aspect of this show, not all of those cuts would've been lethal in real life.
But it was quite useful for the general viewer to see how easily a determined guy with a knife can give multiple, potentially lethal stab wounds even to an experienced fighter - and that no even if you prevail you will get cut, and you'll never know just how badly.
So, if you strip the admittedly distracting ranking system, the points, and all that then you're left with a message which I think should give pause to many.

    • @Xzontyr
      @Xzontyr Год назад +1

Let's be real, the knife test was bs? Have you done this drill before? Also, you need to remember, not all criminals and trouble makers use your typical Hollywood slasher knives. My city has a pretty bad wrap for crime. It's actually in the top 5 in Canada for most violent. It's still home, just don't go out at night or places you shouldn't be. If you look at the police reports a z see the weapons they obtain from criminals, %75 of the melee weapons are small improvised stabbing weapons, not knives for slashing, just solid, fixed thrusting weapons. The rest are usually some sort of improvised blunt weapon. Probably carried by the ones that habe too many aghrovated assault charges using edged weapons, so rheu than legally carry around a chunk of steel, or chainnwith a lock on the end of it for their bike. The idea behind this might be that complex knives cost a bit of money, and are impossible to steel at stores. My cities odd like that, it keeps even. The listerine caged up now. Alot of these people unfortunately stay very below the poverty line, and it is a real problem, but I won't get into that right now, there both opportunities for them, but there isnt at the end of it. It's upsetting. So yes, the marker drill unfortunately is a very realistic simulation to many people reality in a scenario such as that. Mma and knife grips. What the heck guy. I prefer to just do the rocket squirrel strike and destroy their finger joint with precision, with perfect timing into the stab. Intact, sometimes if I just place the finger in the right spot, the enertia from the stab will be enough to break his own finger, problem solved, no need for fancy grips when the guy goes to stab at you. We did this drill every week at our gym. Put on some goggles, got the wash on markers, white clothing, and went at it. By personal experience I can say the most intimidating stance a knife fighter can have isn't the fencing stance, or some other silly Hollywood stance. It's when he's standing perfectly straight, neutral and calm, and has both hands behind his back. Ofcpurse tough guys will say they punch him before he can do anything or tekken kick him through the brick wall. No. This is the worst scenario, because an experienced knife fighter knows how to switch hands very quickly, aswell and deceive you. Yes, there's the good chance you can grab onto their one arm and try control it until you get a take down. However, within that time, it can get so Chaotic, that before you know it, they've switched hands and got you in the back, or they'll bait you in and stab with their empty hand, so you go.to control that arm, while they bingo dab up your back. Than theyl switch it it, and even if you do grab their arm, they'll still switch hands while your busy with both of theirs. Defending against one of those guys is AL.ost impossible unarmed. There's no kick or Krav Maga that's going to save you.

For context, I am 24F. In this situation, I would hope my SO would step in if I visibly look like I am uncomfortable or frozen. If for whatever reason, I am unhinged and attacking a stranger, I wouldn't expect my SO to step in or be involved (unless they agree with my point XD or feel safe to intervene). I wouldn't like it if my SO pushed me out of the cinema like Rokus did in the scenario (that looked like it would hurt). If the roles were reversed and my SO is the one being harrassed, I would follow the same principle.
From my life experience, people always say you should have done this or done that but they do not understand what you were thinking or feeling at the time. It is always easier said than done.
I nearly cried when you spoke about your memory lose. I hope you and your family are well and safe.

My heart goes out to you Mr. Ramsey Dewey regarding the memory issues that both you and your grandmother suffered. I've had a great-aunt, grandmother, and aunt suffer from either dementia or alzheimer's. It's hard to watch sharp minds decline and have them forget you.
I watched the whole Ultimate Self Defense Championship. Overall, it was good. I think the scoring was made-up on the spot and inconsistent. For example, the scenarios WERE slightly different for each competitor. For example: MJ said and did different things each time. And if they knew you were injured and couldn't run, and could not see out of the helmets, that should have factored into the final scoring. (I.e. MJ running up the stairs and you limping up behind her, because you can't run.)

Not escalating your own internal emotional response in a defense situation can be the difference between you defending your life or the life of someone you care about in the safest way possible, versus a hyper-aggressive response that could lead to injury or death.

I’m 32 and had my first stoppage loss recently. Honestly I am thinking to retire after about 5 fights, I’ve had 2 mma, 4 Sanda and one Sanshou, and I won all but one of them. I have an MMA tournament coming up.
I believe in testing myself and have goals to achieve, but there’s a big clash between martial arts for self development and how the neurological issues it can cause can actually make self improvement and awareness more difficult…
Also I want to help people but if I become damaged enough, people will instead be responsible for me, which they never consented to.
    All big considerations.

Pear shaped is also pretty common in places across the UK - a lot of crossover between the slang and sayings between the UK and Australia that I know American English speakers wouldn’t get.
Also as someone who has had partners that can be quite feisty, especially when they feel wronged (would also identify as feminists) you’d be surprised how much they would tolerate. I guess they believed it’s was both our responsibilities to reel each other in when the situation calls for it, even physically. Safety is still their primary concern after many scary situations for them or friends.
As for the end portion of the video I’m sure many of us viewers would want to have hugged it out when you were talking about memory. The fact you still felt comfortable making the cinematography choice you did at the end was awesome! Are parts of your body that can get stabbed or sliced by a knife none life threatening or debilitating and parts like your brachial Artery , Femoral artery, Carotid artery heart ,lungs , kidneys etc that are just because someone is able to touch you with a marker doesn't make it one of those , what isn't taken into account it angle of attack , and ability to generate enough force to do any serious damage . The one who was charged, wasn't living with him but has key to his house (but no key to his gun safe).

To answer your question i agree, if we look at the later scenarios there they say protect yourself first, so if my significant other starts dropping bombs, you should definitly bring yourself to savety first, cause you are not responsible for your significant other in such a scenario.
Also dogs do that, because they are in their weakest state when they poop, so they hope nothing comes and attacks them. Thats also why the often look at their owners so they feel protected by them

About memory loss, I remember how scary it was after a concussion (or similarly even after becoming cognizant of more nuanced developmental trauma patterns) to not know whether what I was experiencing was the result of the damage, or if it was from genuinely stressful situations.
That sort of recovery-recalibration healing phase can be really challenging to reestablish trust and confidence in oneself when tangible ways to know what you know or don't know are potentially missing.
And there's a righteous even if quiet mourning period that goes with that, which I deeply respect you taking time to not only express for yourself but also share the moment on camera for all of us to witness as well. That's a level of emotional fortitude that not everyone can or has committed to do and for that a deeper respect and understanding can be created for others too.
What you're doing with video journals (and possibly even written notes you can make along the way), plus actively teaching people goes a long way in building and reinforcing structure for your recovery and memory. Anything you make or facilitate that provides a feedback loop to connect parts of your brain and remind you of what's related will help a ton in protecting and possibly reviving your memory. The more of the body and senses you can involve for each moment plus time to release and process (like by teaching) plus decompress with leisure the better.
Considering the stress, strain, and even visual limitations you had when going up the stairs to follow MJ, I'd chalk the situation up to stress genuinely eating up your bandwidth for recalling details of the moment.
But the uncertainty and terror that comes with that ambiguity is valid.
Trauma forces disconnect and realizing moments like that can be a reminder that your body and mind are trying to protect you as best it can by focusing on the most important information in the moment while shedding the rest or redirecting everything else into deep memory that might pop up later once it feels relaxed and safe enough to resurface later.
Wishing you the best in your continued journey and thank you for your thoughtful reflections.

I'm sorry about your grandmother. That would be painful to witness. You have it a lot worse than a good friend of mine, but I've personally seen the suffering of a person that obtained head trauma. It's very painful to watch. You both seem to handle it well, and are still able to function in society. He had the offer long ago to go on disability here in Canada, and basically get a good supplemental cheque each month if he didn't work. Instead he refused to accept that fate. Something you also seem to have done. The blindfolded fighting is impressive. Though my friend seems very slow, or mentally challenged as some would say, with slurred speech, his muscle memory is still perfectly intact. Things he did in high repetition are still a part of him. He can have difficulties remembering many things, or the name of someone he just met, which i personally can say iv done many times, yet when it comes to his long time work as a cook, to his grappling, and a bit of striking, he has so much that's just a part of him, and it really is impressive to see. He just let's his body go on auto pilot, and it's almost like it has a mind of its own. So as mentioned, hel have a tough time recalling a name or something that just happened, yet he has the complexity while grappling to deal with any situation presented, and respond to it in a very technical way. This is after he took a very long break from Sambo aswell, after his head injury. He just recently started training again about a year ago. Before that he was off for about 10 years. Previous to that though he had trained since he was young. We're just very careful. Bjj would certainly be the better sport for him, but right now he doesn't even like hearing the word after a recent personal matter at a gym. So though the mind and body can't have the means to express what the soul wants to. I still hold the belief that we all still keep our past somewhere deep inside of us in something that's eternal.

Saddly the sexual harassment happens more to women but also to men in some cases and it's worst for men because in most situations you may look like the bad guy and you have to be very cautious. I would recommend leaving your phone in your pocket recording your conversation it's perfectly legal to record a conversation were you are participating.
Thanks for sharing your life with us coach. I think it's important to reflect about life and be realistic, just because you think you are a good person doesn't mean that it's not going to happen anything bad to you. For example being a vegetarian and think that a wild animal is not going to eat you because of that.
A priest use to tells us to live like today was your last day and work like you would never going to die.

The attacker had all the gear and took no damage from the defender. So even after Seth landed a sweet kick, took him down against the wall and hit him in the head, dude pops up and ‘stabs’ him with the marker. I think they should have disabled the knife dude if you landed a few head shots.
