    I share your passion for TIG welding and have all three venues in my shop. Two things I can recommend ...
    #1. The electrode "stick-out" rule of thumb is the same as the diameter of the welding cup.
    #2. VEVOR wisely provides an extravagant torch lead but little regard for the wall cord. This is easily remedied by fabricating an extension cord using 10/2 Romex. You can use a healthy length with virtually no voltage drop.

      Thanks, I never heard that about the welding cup. I just tried a gas lens (diffuser) for the torch and was very impressed. It's not drastic but I do get a better weld

      Honestly, I think it probably works as well as any other welder. It might not last as long or have all the options but for basic steel welding it's perfect. I think inverter technology has advanced a lot and standardized. I'm guessing the internal components are shared with many welder brands.

    Thanks for the review. I don't "NEED" TIG very often as I have a stick welder and can gas weld and braze but there are times when TIG is just the right way to do something. Your self releasing mill drawbar is a perfect example. I didn't want to spend north of $500 but this fills the need painlessly. Vevor say argon is necessary but do you know of any reason CO₂ wouldn't work for carbon steel?

    • @WinkysWorkshop
      @WinkysWorkshop  8 месяцев назад

      Stay with argon. Short story, I got a MIG tank by mistake. The welding shop messed up. MIG uses argon and 25% CO2. It worked, but not well. I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I could not make a good weld. After 2 days I figured it out. Apparently using straight argon for MIG is a problem too although I have not tried this.

    Years ago, did a lot of welding with everything from Oxy Acetylene to stick, Mig and Tig .
    Used Mig 95% of the time for thin to medium thickness Steel and some Stainless steel
    Stick - Thicker Steel, occasionally Cast iron (a real bear in the summer)
    TIG was for strictly aluminum
    I will caveat things- the TIG was a old school Craftsman Hi Frequency box on a Lincoln tombstone - never have tried with a modern TIG
    Side note, we had to be "mindful of when we did any TIG- It would screw up the Cable TV for half the town, and the ladies really didn't appreciate missing the soap operas ....

    • @WinkysWorkshop
      @WinkysWorkshop  8 месяцев назад

      I think TIG is perfect for the home shop. You can weld fairly thick and thin steel with a lot of control. MIG is definitely faster but not as versatile. My other TIG is AC and very loud. I wonder if it creates tv and radio interference?

    A question that I don't think you addressed in the video? Does this machine start the arc with the button, or do you need to drag/strike the electrode? Also wondered if you figured out what Clean Mode was for? Thanks

    • @WinkysWorkshop
      @WinkysWorkshop  3 месяца назад

      Yes absolutely! This machine has a HF (High Frequency) start. The model in the video is no longer available but the link in the description has been updated to the newer model which also has HF start. In my opinion, if you don't need to weld aluminum this is the welder to buy. I have a more expensive TIG welder that has all sorts of settings but the VEVOR welder is my go to welder. It's simple and effective.

    • @WinkysWorkshop

      @@larrythompson2967 I have welded aluminum maybe 3 times but it more complex than steel. Every time I do it I have to practice for 20 minute before I start welding on something important. I guess if I did it enough I'd be good at it but I just don't need to weld aluminum very often. The hardest thing for me to deal with is the need for less amperage as the aluminum get hot. Steel is unaffected. Apparently aluminums melting point it low enough that when you are welding hot metal it heats up to the melting point quicker. A foot peddle to control the amperage is a plus. I have one but two problems I have with the foot peddle are. 1) coordination. It adds a variable and you have to develop a feel for it. 2) Using a foot peddle requires you to weld at a bench sitting down or at least comfortable. For me its way easier to set the amperage and go but with aluminum the approach is a little more problematic. Newer AC welders also have settings that are hard to understand (at least for me) You can adjust the frequency and also the percent of the time its in a positive or negative polarity. This effects what they call cleaning. Apparently 30% cleaning makes the polarity one direction for a percent of the AC cycle. If you make the setting too high the electrode gets dirty and if you don't have enough it makes a bad weld. I've actually made a few nice welds but I'm just not willing to stick with it and get good at it. I just don't need to do it often enough to worry about it.

    For these tig devices with constand cooling its very importand you regurarly blow out the dust and put the device not to close to the working spot. I fabrikate regularly and do a lot of metal sanding. Metal dust that gets sucked in by the ventilator will short circuit and fry the print plates. Best is to remove the outer casing of the device a few times a year.....just blowing some compressed air at the ventilation openings does not do a good job.

Otherwise it welded just fine.

      I like the pulse mode because it helps to control the heat better I think since there is no option for a foot pedal to be able to do that..
