Maybe you could add some small freshwater snails to her tank to clean away the algae! That's what a lot of aquarium keepers I see doing and they should be small enough that she won't care about them! Zebra Nerite snails are pretty cool because they don't breed in fresh water, so you can have a set amount all the time. But if you want them to breed there are Mystery snails and Assassin snails that could also eat the algae! That or you could do the same with freshwater shrimp. Amano shrimp grow to about 2 inches and don't breed in freshwater, while cherry shrimp do and stay quite small
While yes that would work. The snails would breed out of control without a natural predator to keep the numbers in check. They would create more problems than solutions. Since Rex would eat anything else put in to eat the snails. It would never work.
One issue with nerites is that while they won't successfully breed, they'll still lay white eggs all over the glass which can be hard to scrape off. Anything small added to the tank would also be at risk of getting sucked into the filter intake unless they can add a fine enough mesh or other way to block it.
@@Ryodraco That is true. Though my two nerites don't really lay eggs everywhere. Mystery snails get decently sized too and should handle not being sucked up (at least as adults)

Emily and Ed please consider filling those gaps! The idea of a splash zone is cute, but it doesn't seem worth the risk of someone sticking something (including a small finger) through that gap.
I would be worried about small fingers and potentially them getting stuck and then you have an upset child attached to the alligator enclosure while you try to get their (now probably swollen) finger unstuck.
Yeah I was considering the same and also slippery floors are not safe. And let's not forget someone could also stick other stuff that rex might eat and can't digest etc. So many possibilities.
Plus the fact Rex could just see a stuck finger and think "hmm finger food" while taking a chomp on said child's finger, or whatever they put in there. Wouldn't good for another vet visit if they put some plastic item in there that Rex ate, or having a problem with a finger being in Rex's stomach and all the problems that would come with that. Not a safe situation for them or the guests or Rex.
Similar thought. I was more worried about dirty poopy rex water splashing and some kid somehow getting sick and parents suing them for it. It's a cute idea but not worth the risk.
Just a quick question (I have a bit of a worry) are you sealing the small gaps in the glass? While I hope that everyone goes to visit Rex with good intentions, I know we don’t live in a world with all good people. Ideally it would just be one solid glass plate so that there wouldn't be any gaps but that would be ridiculously expensive and if you're buying three separate glass plates there is going to be gaps and there's nothing you can do about that. Especially if you're buying standard sizes which I would imagine they did to reduce the cost as much as possible.
@@the_undead they also mentioned how hard it was to source glass because most companies don’t want to be liable for glass that’s being used for an aligator enclosure. no matter how well made the glass is, i would imagine the words “aligator” and “zoo” are not the words you want to hear as a glass maker haha
After cleaning Rex's tank, the trees were left sraight up. How does she get in & out of the tank? LOL-within seconds of me posting this y'all gave her a treat and she kinda dipped & water bounced up and out of her tub. WOW! So enjoy y'alls videos and reptile info. Thanx.
I know I might be a bit of a debby downer here, but the splash zone makes a slip and fall risk.. consider putting down grip strip and a small sign to comply with osha's and insurance requirements.
I was mostly joking during that part, because the gap is so small that water would only be able to weep through the crack if anything. We added a ledge below the glass to catch any drips :)
There is literally a drain on the floor right next to it. It's 1/8th of an inch relatively far away from the water. Why is everyone concern trolling these people? Pretty sure after two years of designing the enclosure that they have a handle on it
My friend is like "you've shown her to me a dozen times at least", but Rex is so adorable that I keep trying to show her off. She doesn't look dangerous and scary, she looks sweet and adorable. That isn't to say she isn't dangerous, she could bite and cause a lot of pain, but you know how to handle her. I wouldn't recommend anyone ever to keep an alligator as a pet, but if they choose to do so, they should be very careful, maybe watch your "Rex" videos with the understanding she's unique but there are good recommendations through out.
Snake Discovery videos always help me relax after bad days 💞 loving the content, Emily and Ed!! I'm 17 and thanks to your channel, overcame my fear of snakes to the point that I want to work with them in the future.

I had the chance to visit Rex today. Her enclosure looked great! I'm also grateful that I didn't remember about the Twitch stream when I was trying to get photos of me in the Rex tunnel! lol! Your zoo is amazing!
have you guys considered making rex's enclosure into a large bioactive? maby even some kind of fish she might not eat or plants to help clean the water and help with the filtration. would also help with the hidden poops lol
The substrate would end up in the water & make it hard to see miss Rex underwater though the glass. Rex is also known for being destructive and trying to eat anything that won't eat her. So I don't really think in this setting a bioactive enclosure is best for their purposes. It would look kinda cool though!
@@Artix117a i’m sure they planned the enclosure the best they could for rex and the zoo. not saying they’ll never change things up but they’ve had rex a long time and planned the zoo for years so they probably know what’s going to work best. i would love a lush green enclosure for rex though, she deserves it
@@smelly4498 I mean, did you see what she did to the fake plants they tried with her in her bedroom? I don’t think Rex is terribly willing to share her space with ANYTHING.

Leave it to Emily to bring up my mood after watching Kamp Kanan's video about thieves stealing his black throat and black dragon monitors from his property this morning. It broke my heart. It would be just like if someone stole Rex from Emily and Ed. Thank you Emily cheering me up at least Little.
Would You guys ever add plants to the wall or around the enclosure? I think adding some would make the enclosure look really cool. Maybe adding leafs to the walls hanging out like a canopy would be cool and harder to destroy?
I love Rex and the enclosure so much, but I'm just a bit worried kids will try to stick their fingers through those gaps. I'm a kindie teacher, so I know that kids will do their darndest to try to touch anything they shouldn't I.e. in this case an american alligator. Keep up the awesome content! Much love and support from Taiwan! 😊

Interesting to watch, and how well Rex behaves. She loves her pond. Odd seeing no one wearing masks or concern about exposing others. I guess the pandemic is over.
Nope, definitely not over yet. There are still a lot of cases of Delta variant, although Omicron will likely overtake them. Plus there is the new mutation they just found. People have died from Omicron, just not in as great of numbers. Unfortunately it still can be deadly, cases of children being hospitalized are going up, and it can mutate more at any time. It's not quite yet time to stop making and distancing. Interesting fact: Omicron is a mutated version of the original strain discovered in China. It is not a mutated version of Delta, Beta, etc. Scientists are starting to suspect it mutated in an animal, likely mice, then jumped back to humans. This explains why it has so many more mutations than a new variant usually does.
I watched you scrubbing away with your very little cleaning brush. Might I suggest a nice stiff outdoor broom. You could then cleaned without nearly ending up in the water. You would also be able to do the floor.
I’ll never have the room or resources to own a crocodilian but man I love them, they’re so cool!! I live vicariously through you guys and your lovely gator!
Since being in that enclosure she has gotten significantly stronger. ❤ in this video she has a LOT of big teeth. The older ones her teeth weren’t that large. So that’s good 👍. She loves her space. It’s awesome to see how far Rex has gone! From a box for 27 something years, to a small room where she was happy, to this “mansion” to her! ♥️♥️♥️
just curious: are there really supposed to be gaps in rex’s glass wall? if so, what are those gaps for?
Ideally it would just be one solid glass plate so that there wouldn't be any gaps but that would be ridiculously expensive and if you're buying three separate glass plates there is going to be gaps and there's nothing you can do about that. Especially if you're buying standard sizes which I would imagine they did to reduce the cost as much as possible.
@@the_undead oh i see. having to buy separate standard size panels makes a whole lot of sense. thank you! 😊
The size of the glass panes don't perfectly match the window size I am assuming. Either that or it aids with airflow through the enclosure.
@@the_undead they also mentioned how hard it was to source glass because most companies don’t want to be liable for glass that’s being used for an aligator enclosure. no matter how well made the glass is, i would imagine the words “aligator” and “zoo” are not the words you want to hear as a glass maker haha
expansion gap maybe?
Loved seeing Rex positively scamper back to her pool when she was returned to her enclosure! That is a gator happy in her home for sure.
Another option is to silicone the holes but that might not look as nice as you wanted.
Silicone or tape on the inside would take care of it.
Pretty sure after two years of designing the enclosure that they have a handle on it
Rex is such a brave girl sitting out and seeing the public.
4:08 daaang that's a smooth transition!!
I'm excited to see your carpet python introduced into the zoo, they are my favorite reptile. Hopefully yours prefers hanging out up high as much as mine do!
I LOVE how Emily is always "oh, it's just whatever" for things like glass delays. Never upset about it!
Omg Rex is thriving in her enclosure! Congrats y'all, she's now doing the zoo gator thing where she knows who you are but she'll be damned if you get brownie points with her
GOT TO VISIT REX TODAY❗❗ LOVE to see how she's thriving💙💙💙
Imagine working here and seeing your boss running around with an alligator poop in hand, but also knowing her so you're not even surprised 😂 I love you guys so much
Awww I saw this on the livestream! So cool to see the "other side" of this video! Hope you're all doing okay and staying safe!
erm you two MIGHT want to get a "CAUTION, WET FLOOR DUE TO DEATH ROLLS" warning sign either on or near Rex's pad......dont want anyone slipping & then suing you bugs xxx
With the plants or even mosses in the water substrate in it wouldn't be too big an issue I think. But I've also never made one for a gator yet.
@@Artix117a that's fair
@@Artix117a i’m sure they planned the enclosure the best they could for rex and the zoo. not saying they’ll never change things up but they’ve had rex a long time and planned the zoo for years so they probably know what’s going to work best. i would love a lush green enclosure for rex though, she deserves it
@@smelly4498 I mean, did you see what she did to the fake plants they tried with her in her bedroom? I don’t think Rex is terribly willing to share her space with ANYTHING.
I'm just mega-impressed by the fact that the alligator comes when called! More or less!
I'm surprised she fits in that bin still I feel like she's gotten so big
I know, right! I was like "You're gonna put her in that? How?"
Absolutely too small, the tail probably had to be bent very uncomfortably for hours😠
Yep she still fits in it pretty well actually! Her tail curls a bit, but it's not uncomfortable or anything. Everybody keeps saying she looks much smaller in person than in the videos, so the camera must add an extra 10 pounds XD
@Eric Wylie Stop concern trolling. You're being ridiculous
. God, people are annoying.
@@SnakeDiscoveryI subed
It amazing to see how strong Rex is... Seriously. This is an Alligator that is stunned in its growth and STILL has a huge amount of strength.
Animals are amazing
Im glad she got her glass in! Aww angry rex poot lol i love her💚
Side note: I know you arent in florida but Kamp Kenan just had teo lizards stolen by the same jerks thst stole Tom Crutchfields and killed one of his animals. These people seem to be targeting youtubers. Please please if you can make sure you have security in your zoo. I know you have cameras but anything else that can help provide safety for those beans please do. Its scary how these people are hitting these wonderful keepers. I dont want to see a break in story on your channel to :(
Sheesh.. I just went over there and looked at his video. Shared it, that is all I can do from here. Thanks for letting us know so we can help in whatever way we can. And indeed, please @Snake Discovery, be careful.
You all have done good by her. She really is thriving.
Rex's noise is not as curved as used to be .She looks so happy in her new enclosure at the zoo 😍
I used to watch this channel often a few years back but kinda just got out of the habit of watching it. Finally remembered the name after 3-4 years of not watching it at all and I'm happy to be back, I love Emily's personality and the personality, care and love that she gives the reptiles she works with. Really fun channel to watch!
Rex seems so genuinely happy in her new home. It’s easy to see why she’s a fan favorite. Emily, have you ever modeled?
Love watching Rex videos!! I watch the Twitch cam, too. Thanks for sharing your special girl with us!
Nobody:
Absolutely no-one whatsoever:
Emily: *POOP ATTACK!!!*
You are very special people! I love watching you care for your animals. The world sure could use more people like you!
I absolutely love this channel though and have used it to teach my students so many cool animal facts and sensitize them to what could be viewed as potentially scary animals. Keep up the awesome content! Much love and support from Taiwan! 😊
😒😒🙄
i had not seen Rex in quite a while, glad to see she's doing great and as sassy as usual
Emily: People like you more then me anyway
Ed:Yeah, that's true.
Lol
But HE loves Emily more than other people do, and that's how it should be.
Rex’s smile makes me incredibly happy.
I’m honestly not surprised she’s not happy about going in the bin
@@abigel_____4045 go away you bot
@@qiibi8714 Just report and move on, replying to bots tends to be a bad idea
It was amazingly smart of you guys to design the zoo with a floor drain right by Rex's enclosure.
Kamp kenan just had 2 reptiles stolen. Its suspected to be the same as toms thieves given there are many similarities. I encourage all reptile owners. Especially outdoor keepers to put up cameras. Double lock. And if you can, chip all pets.
What kind of POS steals reptiles? Smh
@@yeetnama9094 Dunno but he just got back his animals. one was found a week or two ago. the other was just found a few days ago. tossed away. it was found frozen in a neighbors yard but luckily its still alive
I've been watching yall for yrs.... like since I was in high school.... but I've watched & rewatched all the Rex videos. Her mouth, nose, teeth area look so much better than it did in the earlier videos of her... shes probably my favorite animal yall have
Rex: I don’t want to come out
Emily: you have to come out
Ed: I’m just going to help
You guys ere amazing thank you for posting such good videos also you guys take great care of your animals
This is my favorite channel on RUclips! So fun and learn something new each time too! Never stop making videos, Emily and Ed!
Me: grossed out about cleaning dog poop WITH A PAPER TOWEL
Emily: picks up alligator poop with bare hands!
Me : WHAAAAAT
Wow, a lot of work!!!
It’s always pleasant to see the backstage~😅
Thank you for sharing this video~🤗
I know you like the small spaces but i would probably close it for safety. You dont want kids trying to stick their fingers in or accidentally put something in her enclosure. I doubt they would but kids are very unpredictable & adventures. Maybe something mesh would work if you still want the "splash zone" or air circulation.
Love Rex's interactions with you!
It’s been like 1-2 months that glass is LATE
Also I have a toffee hognose named coffee he say blelele (hi)
Rex looks phenomenal. Very, very healthy!!🐊❤️🐊
Yall. Emily ain't stupid ok. If it was an issue, she would have done something about yhe gap, and she does. You can already see that she filled it with a strip in clips after! Emily is all about safety first as always, so chill!
Rex really looks like she's flourished with her new enclosure and exposure. :) I think she enjoys the attention.
with omicron I'm worried about all those unmasked kids 😰
Rex is sooo cute!!! The store i would open: a recycled merchandise boutique, with every item rescued from garbage & made into amazing stuff like clothing, household goods, furniture-even jewelry!
Interesting to watch, and how well Rex behaves. She loves her pond. Odd seeing no one wearing masks or concern about exposing others. I guess the pandemic is over.
I was a bit sad about the lack of masks. Minneapolis and St. Paul have reinstated their mask mandate so the rest of the state is soon to follow
@@emmy_platinum Thank you for replying. I had been watching the RoyLab Stats live feed right before your Rex video, and was sad to see the US stats.
Unfortunately, in Minnesota where the zoo is located, there is only a mask mandate in city/government owned buildings :(
Its amazing that she doesn't completely freak out when she goes in a travel bin considering the years of neglect she faced stuck in a tiny box.
FIRST
You are the true first
Rex is really smart you did a good job raising her
Please wear masks around your zoo visitors, not masking around the public right now is both unsafe and disrespectful wtf.
I watched you scrubbing away with your very little cleaning brush. Might I suggest a nice stiff outdoor broom. You could then cleaned without nearly ending up in the water. You would also be able to do the floor.
Wow I never seen Rex so active and happy before😍😍
I’ll never have the room or resources to own a crocodilian but man I love them, they’re so cool!! I live vicariously through you guys and your lovely gator!
I love her lopsided smile so much
please, make more videos about Rex. I miss seeing her more.
Since being in that enclosure she has gotten significantly stronger. ❤ in this video she has a LOT of big teeth. The older ones her teeth weren’t that large. So that’s good 👍. She loves her space. And climbing in and out of the pool has made her so much stronger. I’m going back looking at old videos. We need new updates on her. ❤ she’s my favorite
The pop up area is everything! Though there were several times when I panicked for a sec thinking there were kids just hanging out in the tank lol
Good to see that Rex is still doing good. She has such a cute toothy goofy smile. : )
Fell in love with Rex and how far she came absolutely 💯 beautiful 💞 mommy is the best.
totally agree on the titanium heaters being better
Ticked off Rex is kinda adorable. Awww, you should have done a Caddy Shack reference
Wow! Her nose and teeth look amazing!!!
The way her LED lightning from the water is very cool.
