Maya I am so proud of you! I was really listening to what you were saying about the black exploitation movies and as a person who came up as a teenager during that time, I know exactly what you mean ;and I love that you came back and gave yet another perspective about it because to be honest ,I think we all feel both ends of this issue that you speak of... there is the looking at it as being exploited and exposing Us in only one sort of generalized perspective and then on the other hand it was the feeling wonderful seeing all black casts and having it directed by black directors and having some kind of exposure to our Black culture. Was it realistic to us, NO! But I see it as a foundation for the beginnings of expressing who we are what we are where we are what we are about. And it laid the ground stone for the new Young filmmakers like you to come along, so I thought it was very very mature on your part and very astute on your part and very empathetic on your part to even discuss both sides. I was like clapping my hands and going you go my daughter!❤
Hey Maya! As a fellow black woman who was a film major in college (I switched to anthropology), it is super refreshing to see you talk about the experiences of Black people in Hollywood in the 1970s. Have you thought about starting a movie club? If so, I'd be so down to join. I've been looking for a space to talk about these types of issues and topics in film with like-minded folks!
Same here. I would love to join a Movie Club as a male black individual who has a fascination and love/admiration for films and Hollywood the idea and concept not the business or people. Love from the UK.
Girl. Imma need you to go ahead and share those essayssss!!! your takes were so interesting, I liveeee. (if you ever wanna make a video essay.. I'm sat.)
Happy Holidays Maya! I grew up watching Crooklyn, and I was a little surprised that it was your first time seeing it! It is a beautiful movie. This is a great video, and I enjoyed when you spoke about black exploitation in film. I took an African-American Literature class this past Fall Semester and my teacher discussed something similar about black stories being exposed by white authors.
Hey Maya B ☺️ All the best with your finals.. I lost my dad in queens New York last week in a car accident, and I was so discouraged to do the things I usually did, the grieving process is going to be lengthy but I’m happy that seeing your uploads still brings me a small amount of joy. 🙏🏽✨
I’m so sorry for your loss! I’m sending you all my love and best wishes through your grieving process and I hope I can continue to support you through this! Love u lots 🤍🤍
Omg, maya, can we talk about what I just saw in the news, with Simone biles husband claiming to never have known her before? I need your take on this. 😮💨
Happy holidays Maya! My son is in his Junior year of college and he's a dance/theater major so his finals are similar as far as choreographing a piece and performing or writing a script, and acting it out. He just finished finals as well. piece
The rant on your essay is so real, i started w one idea for my thesis based on my anger and after some research the topic became so broad and nuanced I had to change the focus if i wanted to still make the paper on that topic. I ended up teaming up w some classmates for another type of thesis but its def a lesson i keep having to learn lol. I have strong opinions and i go in w a narrow mindset, only to be reminded that essays are discussions and most things in life are very gray :)
I watched this on my TV, but had to jump on my phone to comment ….this has been my favorite episode thus far! The way you zen out and talk about film is sooo calming! I have never even thought about film, in depth, in the ways you explained but I felt so apart of the conversation and knew I could add to it. Hearing people geek out over their passions is so exciting! I can also sooo relate to the college content ..I want to start my masters but 😅😮💨
Hi maya! I like ur points about the blaxploitation era. I mean it was exploitationl obviously. but i LOVE IT. Not only was it the first time we saw cool black leads even as good characters (like Mr. T, Cleopatra Jones, Friday Foster, Spook who sat outside the door etc) . Plus the black women of this era were the FIRST ever strong female leads in movies ever!! Today wish there was a Black Ferris Bueler type movie. Just black teens enjoying life with just enough "blackness " to make it real iykwim. Great points hope u got an A on that paper. Edit: i think the past strong female leads (sarah conor, princess leia, ripley, sheba baby, etc) were better writen bc they had to overcome or had something taken from them. I agree katniss was well written. However i like the movie captain marvel . But i do feel like they could have given her sometign to overcome like maybe, a fear of her powers or a memory plot (amnesia like in Akira ) . I think her personality was ok (similar to tony starks honestly) but, i think she had no humps to overcome. Like spiderman is so relatable (bc hes s teenager honestly) abd bc he has STRUGGLES. They did not give carole denvers any struggle!! Anyway i bet ur paper was 10/10 sorry for rambling but i love film
exactlyy! They're biggest miss was not giving Carol any hardships because then it just felt like a laser show. A cool laser show at that tho I loved watching the fight scenes, but her character just felt so underdeveloped
@@mayabeatriz ikr!! The graphics were cool, but there wasn't any character development. I can't wait to see more of your takes as u continue learning in film school girlie🎀
loved the video as usual and I just wanted to say I love you popping in with your thoughts about Black storytelling in film and would love to see you incorporate more of your thoughts on your assignments in your future videos ily ❤
Though the emergence of black producers/directors such as spike Lee and Tyler Perry allowed for black peoples stories to be told by black creatives, another crtitique is how, these stories brought forth negative and harmful portrayals of black women, especially dark skinned women. Which kind of links to your strong female lead theory. Not only were black women portrayed as work mules and the strong black women by white writers and producers you now had black male creatives adding another layer to that and in turn reaffirming that trope. Moreover, now we have seen a decline in fully black dark skinned female lead opportunities and just a sprinkle on top of that Spike Lee is xenophobic
I used to be a film major too!! but I switched to an English CW major with a Media & Communications double major. Love to see other black girls in this fielddd😙
Sometimes i feel like going back to school because my mom has her masters but i have two kids under 10 (age 9 and 1) so i feel like it’ll be hard for me right now
lol yea I care more about college grades than high school. I’m literally doing my master’s in MIS and calculated what I needed to get honors when I graduate in the Spring. I need to chill. I hate group projects. They can make or break your whole grade. I literally had a 98 in one class. Group project brought me down to a 91. That means I had an A- which completely ruined my 4.0!! Ugh I hate it here
If you're in college, what's your major? also how were your finals??💌
i was in college i graduated last month with a major in business logistics management.
@@dajuannakgo ahead buisnesss!
