I would say the USA is a country of consumption and since we do not embrace the culture of multi generational living like most countries outside of the West, there is no point in building homes that will last for hundreds of years when the next generation will just move out and supposedly buy their own place to use.
I would also look at any upgrade you can do to insulation and wiring ( example get a extra outlet for water heater just in case if you want to switch to a electric one in the future. Also you can add blocking inflame for you to hang TV in the living room.
