The joke from the beginning that you didn't get... There's an old myth that parents used to tell their children when the children asked where babies come from. And that myth was, "When two parents love each other very much, a stork will bring them a baby." For reference, a 'stork' is a large bird. The joke is making the assertion that the reason people can't make babies anymore is that they have killed and eaten all of the storks. So, no babies can be delivered anymore.

One of my all-time favorite movies, yet I feel like not too many people have seen it, much less react to it on RUclips. Thanks for giving it a shot Dasha, glad you liked it.

Marika is the unsung hero of this picture.

One of the most underrated movies of all time. Simply fantastic film from beginning to end and far more influential then it ever gets credit for.

One of my absolute favorites! The way they shot that car scene going down the dirt road is insane!

The joke about the stork bird... When young children ask where babies come from many parents tell them that a stork brings the baby because they are too young to be told about, "making love"... The joke is, All these people are gathered together to try to find out why the babies are no longer coming while the guy is eating the stork...

"I think they have more important problems to worry about than immigrants if humanity is dying." Dasha's insights always get right to the point of things.

My favorite moment is when the soldiers see the baby the older soldiers look at the baby with hope, the younger soldiers are shocked as they never have seen a baby before. Some of the soldiers are seen getting on their knees and others are doing the sign of the cross, it is to show that it is a literal miracle that there might be hope for humanity. But they go back to fighting as soon as the baby is out of the way almost like human nature will always continue to ruin what was a good thing or moment

A long time ago, when children got curious about where babies come from, people used to tell them that babies were delivered by a kind of bird called a stork. The joke he's making is based on this old wives' tale--basically, there are no babies because people are eating the storks.

Two great little touches in this movie- animals love Theo and he has really bad luck with shoes. Pretty awesome, but minor, points.

When Theo was crying next to the tree and Dasha got upset, I though "this movie is about to WRECK you." One of my all-time-favorites. It wrecks me too. Goodbye Ruby Tuesday. Damn.

One of the aspects of this movie that always gets me is that even in a dystopian world humans still want to experience beautiful things, so the deer in the abandoned school is an example of that. In a strange way, people are closer to animals and nature now (sheep, cows, dogs, cats, chickens, deer). And while the art inside the Battersea Power Station is also beautiful (Michelangelo and Picasso), it's damaged, and almost no one is experiencing it, so it seems cold and distant. But also, the pig floating over the power station reproduces the cover art of Pink Floyd's

If you wan't something more lighthearted involving protecting babies, watch "shoot em up", it even has the same main actor.

I love when you make assumptions about the movie based on the title...your prediction that men could be the ones giving birth made me LOL

The title references Psalm 90 - "Thou turnest man to destruction; and sayest, Return, ye children of men.." I think of that when the soldiers begin to pray and kneel, then just as quickly return to fighting... the world is dying and yet they have to make the destruction faster...

Anyone notice that when Theo changes clothes in bexhill, he’s wearing the London 2012 Olympics branded sweater from our reality? Amazing Easter Egg detail that drives home the subtext of Cuarons films. Yes this is a science fiction film, but it is still dramatized version of OUR reality. In a sad irony, we only notice the brutality of our society when we see it reflected back to us in a film, but like Theo and the average people in the film, in our real lives we ignore the extreme violence and decay of our world. There’s a whole other subtle commentary Cuaron is making beneath this very straightforward story of a man and woman driving to the coast.
