I love that you demonstrated by painting a person of colour. I've seen so many videos on watercolour portraits and skin tones and they all focus almost entirely on white/Caucasian and other light skin tones. I'm super pale and live in a really white community, so I need all the help I can get learning to paint diverse portraits.
Alex O'Neil I think its bc most people have a harder time mixing those pale tones. The tiny amount of pigment, the actual colors used, and the large amount of water all seem so counter intuitive.
@@lizziedae91 tbh I've personally been able to mix Caucasian skin tones with relative ease and no tutorial, but I've always really struggled with dark skin tones without making them look like mud or really flat.
@@veronikasimon7696 All those renaissance portraits of famous people ... I bet some of them had blemishes, pimples, scars, birthmarks ... but the artist just left them out if it improved the overall look!
I love the combination of loose hair, splatters and the super detailed face. I have a hard time with building up face layers. Halfway through there is always this ugly stage where it feels like you are failing so hard. Sometimes after a couple more layers and details it looks amazing, but not giving up in the middle or stopping while it's too light/not enough contrast can be a challenge!
That is my biggest issue. The ugly stage lol I have such a hard time not giving up. And even if you do mess up it’s almost never as bad as you think and can be fixed/improved. One of the best peices if advice I’ve heard from an artist was to finish the piece. Push through and finish even if you think it’s awful. It gives you the opportunity to fix it and learn and it gives you that little bit of extra time into the painting that eventually translates to experience. So guys, I know it’s hard to get past the ugly stage but just try pressing on. You might end up surprising yourself and the very worst possible outcome is still giving you experience to be better :)
YESSSSS KIRSTY. I also love that you featured a painting of a subject with melanin. It's so hard to find content/tutorials for brown and darker skintones who also have 'green/gold'/red/purple/blue undertones. There's only how-to's for olive/pink/cream tones with the undertone variation. That's great and everything but having an abundance of tuts for subjects with more melanin is so....needed. This piece is so so so beautiful.
Hi Kirsty, have you ever considered applying for Portrait Artist of the Year? You absolutely should, your work is amazing! Thank you for sharing your tips 🙋💞💖
My biggest takeaway was to paint in all the skin first using the wet-in-wet technique. And also that it’s okay to mix styles. And to use colored pencil at the end. So many good tips!
Its so pretty. the hair is so pretty. the girl is so pretty. the skin is so smooth. you really outdid yourself this time. and here i thought you couldn't get even better but you did!
All your tips ere wonderful but the ones I found most useful were when you told us when to do the wet in wet method and when to use wet on dry .One of the BEST and well explained presentations I have heard . Thanks

I got a covering pen and paint my Highlight first with it. so you can overpaint your highlights and at the end you can remove the covering colour. It's then a bit like dried glue and you can pull it off your painting.
@@nadines.1880 Yes, but then you've got to have top quality paper, or you'll risk ripping it in the pull off process. I am a newbie in watercolor painting.
