  • Chambéry-Le-Vieux has been placed under the patronage of the Virgin (vocale of the Assumption) at least since the 12th century. The origin of this cult is perhaps linked to the vocation of places to pass through, the Virgin being often invoked to protect travellers. During the Baroque period, an important Marian pilgrimage was to develop in Chambéry-Le-Vieux: many surrounding villages brought children, “and even grown-ups”, specifies a pastoral visit of 1678, “who are seized with fear » and place them under the protection of the Virgin, « Sub Umbra Illius », under her shadow as the inscription carried on the venerated statue of the Virgin of Holy Shadow reminds us. Should we speak of Saint or Holy Shadow? We cannot answer with certainty because several interpretations are possible. We can only notice that the word remained masculine for a long time and that it became feminized especially in the 19th century. But the importance of the pilgrimage was such that the town was only called "Saint Ombre" as indicated - in the masculine - the Sardinian cadastre of 1732. The Virgin of Saint Ombre is a polychrome wooden statue from the 17th century, presumed copy of an older statue, which is in one of the chapels of the church. It was originally placed in the primitive church of the village, transformed in 1866 into a mortuary chapel and of which only the choir, partly painted in trompe l'oeil, and the medieval portal (13th century?) are preserved. The cemetery which surrounded it has, with the exception of a few perpetual concessions, been moved (final closure by the Municipal Council in 1938). Built with few resources by the architect Fivel between 1859 and 1864, the new church very quickly presented serious defects in the vaults which led to a long lawsuit with the municipality and major works. The bell tower, placed in an original way against the choir of the church, was also the subject of a conflict with the architect Revel. Since 1984, it has housed a clock installed by the Paccard company.
There are at least 2 bells, the large one sounds the note MI3-3 and the small one LA#3-4. Listening to the sound of the little bell maybe the little one was cast by Meunier Eustache de Chambéry?
