  • SUMMARY OF THE HISTORY OF THE BUILDING:
Nothing remains of the ancient church of San Nazzaro, surveyed by Goffredo da Bussero in the 13th century. The first fourteenth-fifteenth century modifications led to the lengthening of the church towards the west and the addition of a wing on the left of the nave, to the north, in which some minor chapels, seats of clericates, were placed. In the 16th century, the baptismal font and the first chaplaincy (corresponding today to the altar) of San Michele were added with a consequent modification of the façade on which a small protective portico appeared for the entrance door. This was followed by the period of Spanish domination from 1535 to 1706 after which, in the first half of the eighteenth century (c. 1740) the church was rebuilt: the apse with the choir, a large presbytery and two chapels on each side were added. The church, thanks also to the free labor of local workers, is enriched with a magnificent façade with two niches on the sides of the entrance door containing the statues of Saints Nazarus and Celsus, all surmounted by an imperious classical pronaos. In 1904 the entire building was lengthened with the addition of four side chapels.
    THE BELLS:
In 1738, thanks to the provision of free labor by many citizens and copious monetary donations from the Vitalis, 3,064.15 lire, a slender bell tower was erected leaning against the south-western side of the presbytery. During the Cisalpine Republic in 1789, the three bells placed on the bell tower were requisitioned by the French government and a few months later, thanks to the interest of the parish priest Baldassare Maggioni, they were replaced by five others. In 1931 the current bell tower was built, outside the building, located in the eastern and central part in front of the choir and completed with a concert of eight Bb2 bells cast by the Barigozzi Brothers of Milan while the old one from 1738 was subsequently demolished.
THE BELLS OF SAN MARCO'S CHURCH:
Inside the church, on the right at the entrance, there are 3 small bells recovered from the small church of San Marco, no longer used for worship. It is a concert of 3 bells in G4 cast again by the Barigozzi brothers of Milan in 1933.
