  • Inside this church there are paintings with optical illusion by the Piedmontese Casimir Vicario, then finished by his students following his death in 1847. He worked in the Saint-Pierre cathedrals de Moûtiers and Saint-François-de-Sales de Chambéry, as well as at the castle of the Dukes of Savoy. His work is continued by the painters Giacobini and J.B Ferraris. The old church was elevated to the rank of collegiate church by Pope Clement VII on December 2, 1389. Dedicated to Saint James, it obtained a relic (a rib) of the saint. The current building dates from the 17th century. On November 20, 1669, a fire affected Sallanches and its houses; he destroyed the church, and it was rebuilt in 1688. The building was listed as a historic monument in 1986. The treasure is presented in a superb walnut cabinet from the 17th century. It is mainly composed of pieces of goldwork from the 15th to the 18th century, most of which come from donations from noble parishioners, reverend canons of the Collegiate Church or Sallanchards who became rich during their emigration. The three most remarkable pieces of the treasure are: the large gilded silver monstrance made in 1688 in Munich, the 15th century reliquary-monstrance of Saint James in which a holy relic is kept, the small dated silver sun monstrance from 1750 offered by François Biolley, originally from the parish and established as a merchant in Augsburg in Bavaria. Classified as a Historic Monument in 1974, the Saint Jacques collegiate church benefited from a complete renovation from 1991 to 2000. It is now worth a detour and can be visited all year round. The church of Sallanches has been placed under the name of Saint Jacques since its origins. Burned several times in the 16th and 17th centuries, it was rebuilt in its current form between 1680 and 1688. Vast building from the 17th century, redecorated in the 19th century in a Neoclassical style. Today, classified as a Historic Monument, this former collegiate church contains treasures: goldwork, relics and master paintings, without forgetting its rich furniture and its remarkable organ. Inside, paintings with optical illusion by the Piedmontese Casimir Vicario, then completed by his students following his death in 1847. He worked in the cathedrals of Saint-Pierre de Moûtiers and Saint-François-de- Sales de Chambéry, as well as at the castle of the Dukes of Savoy. The organ was built by the organ builder Joseph Callinet in 1850. The case was made by Pédrini, a carpenter - cabinetmaker well known in Haute-Savoie and was classified as a Historic Monument in 1975. Two years later, it was it is the turn of the instrumental part to be classified as a Historic Monument. This is the third “Callinet” organ restored by the Quoirin workshop. In each case, the restoration of these very characteristic instruments proved difficult, the concern being not to distort any of the elements that remained intact and to reconstitute the missing elements with the maximum rigor. The Sallanches organ having been profoundly transformed around 50 years ago, it was necessary to reconstruct, using the method of the Callinet workshop, a large part of the transmission (abbreviations, stop prints, keyboards, etc.) and of the wind tunnel. The piping had to be entirely extended to find the original tone and the case was completely stripped to return to the blonde color slightly enhanced with a shellac varnish, typical of Callinet organs.
    FEATURES OF THE BELLS:
Imposing ringing/chime of 13 Bells, 9 of which that swing were cast by the Paccard brothers in 1844 in Quintal near Annecy and the remaining 4 still by Paccard in 1994 but this time in Sevrier (still near Annecy)! The big Bell rings the Bb2 and weighs 2749KG (in fact 2 motors are needed to get it started)! They were electrified by Abbe' Desbiolles in the 1950s/60s (thanks to @francominari2256 for the info!)

    COMMENT:
In this quick little video on this imposing upper-savoy ringtone I first show the little carillon which rings after the Angelus (I decided to put it before for the sake of video editing...), the Angelus whose the swing is no longer performed on the small bell D4 but on the 8th bell, therefore the C4! And as a little bonus, an organ piece that I recorded by chance during my visit!
