I live in California and I completed the program for Court Interpreter/Translator (Spanish/English) at Cal State University Los Angeles. I got my diploma of completion of that program from that university, but I haven't got my Court Interpreter/Translator certification from the state of California yet. I heard in this recording that one doesn't need certification to work as a translator, is that true? I have been told by my former professors that I can't work as a translator unless I obtain the state of California Court Interpreter/Translator certification. I need an expert from the American Translators Association to answer the following question: Do I need to be certified to work as a translator in the state of California? Can I get just a translator certification in the state of California without taking the California Court Interpreter written and oral exam? I already passed the California Court Interpreter written exam by the way.
