Stunning performance, technically *and* musically accomplished. Arrau in top form is something to marvel at, especially in Brahms, Beethoven and Liszt.

Hammer Klavier it must have been one of the longest programs ever even for Arrau. I would love to hear the whole recital. The most of it can fortunately be heard in other uploaded Arrau- Recitals.
I often think that Arrau was greatest in Liszt. And if I had to choose the single greatest ever studio piano recording, it might well be his Transcendental Etudes.
In the late 70' I attended 3 or 4 concerts by him in Paris. He was still incredible in Liszt's 1st Ballad, Petrarca Sonnetos and Jeux d'eau à la Villa d'Este.
@@eblackbrook He did not record the Legendes commercial for any recording Company. This is a live performance. In later there have come out live recordings and radio performances of works he never studio recorded . Schoenberg piano pieces, Ravel Gaspar de La Nuit , Haydn variations , Liszt Totentanz and other things .
It's not the instrument, it's the wonderful Pianist. With an extraordinary technique that includes a unique sound, full of harmonics and never beaten, although he plays fortissimo.
Would it be possible to find private, radio or stage recordings of Master Arrau of Chopin's Second Piano Sonata (funeral march) and of Mussorgsky''s Pictures at an Exhibition? Arrau surely had these works in his unmatched wide repertoire and surely had played them along his long career. They are the only items missing that were not published in his unmatched immense collection of recordings. They are very important works that surely with Arrau would gain new insights, as it happened with everything he played. Please.
Please try to find and to give to us the Arrau live recordings of Chopin's second Piano Sonata op. 35 and of Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. He surely played these works in recitals. They are the only missing items in Arrau's recorded legacy.
This is a wonderful posting my thanks to whoever is responsible. Does anyone know if there is a commercially available recording of Arrau playing Liszt's second legend (and also of Liszt's second ballade for that matter)? If so, I would be grateful to learn the details.
Norman Bernard There is unfortunate no commercial recording of the 2. Legend but there is a very famous studio recording of the 2. ballade . In 1969 he made a Philips Liszt album . In the program was the 2. Ballade . This recording has been reissued several times on CD . You can see the the whole Arrau discography on Google “Arrau House “ discography.
@@ulfwernernielsen6708 Ulf, thank you very much for letting me know about the legend: what a pity. Since writing this post I have bought a huge 80 CD box containing all Arrau's Phillips recordings and some other recordings besides which has the ballade 2 recording you mention. For anyone who may be interested, the box set is readily available on Amazon.
What's with the constant audio panning? This is a very good performance... constantly disturbed by the recording artifacts. A mono-ization is needed, in my opinion, for a more cohesive listening experience.
Kempff's play is much more to my taste. For this piece he had a magic touch. Too many miss the emotional by striking the keys too firmly and changing the piece.
Sublime Claudio Arrau, finesse, élégance, intelligence, poésie, brillance et virtuosité. Un des plus grands pianistes de tous les temps.
Arrau is my go-to for the sublime side of Liszt. Always fantastic
This is extraordinary. Out of this world. Arrau always magnificent.

Thank you for info.
Overkill with that programming
Simply fantastic. Incredibly elegant and powerful.
Asombra siempre la profundidad de las interpretaciones de Arrau y la monumental envergadura de su sonido!
Oh my god! It’s wonderful!! Touch the heart of everyone! The master of master!
A sublime performance. Some people 'get it' so well. :-) I was lucky enough to see and hear him live in the 70s-so unassuming and what a player! :-)
I often think that Arrau was greatest in Liszt. And if I had to choose the single greatest ever studio piano recording, it might well be his Transcendental Etudes.
Wonderful performance. He's one with his piano !
Such nobility and intensity of feeling - great to hear playing that reaches so deep into human experience.
Welche Technik Arrau doch hatte zu jener Zeit und die Kraft und die unglaubliche Klangfülle, fantastisch ^^
Gratuliere zu diesem Upload!
Superlativo, magnifico
terrific performance - the sound is amazing. Is it just me of is Arrau playing with so much more rawness and excitement than decades later?
In the late 70' I attended 3 or 4 concerts by him in Paris. He was still incredible in Liszt's 1st Ballad, Petrarca Sonnetos and Jeux d'eau à la Villa d'Este.
Arrau gave more in concert performances than he dared in the recording studios.
Whahaaahh, happy! My favourite pianist :)
Wow...
what is it with Arrau's interpretations that manage to make us feel the depth of the music . There are a few others like him , but not very many.
What a fantastic discovery ! Thank you so much !!
Arrau en su máxima dimensión.
This is a real treasure. Thank you so much, Erwin.
Bravo! Excellent! Very unfortunate that Arrau hadn't record both Legendes.
He did. They are both on the album that this is from.

This IS a find - a gift to all Arrau fans, and what a performance! Presumably a radio broadcast? Thanks!

Closest yet to Nyiregyhazy live. Thanks for posting.

Bravo! I always wanted to hear the Maestro´s rendering of this work. Is there a rec of Legend n. 1? Or perhaps any of his Villa Lobos?
What's with the constant audio panning? This is a very good performance... constantly disturbed by the recording artifacts. A mono-ization is needed, in my opinion, for a more cohesive listening experience.
Arrau in his prime.
Do you know if Arrau recorded complete Annee (1st, Suisse)? I can’t find it...
He did not .
Arrau had an extraordinary technique that he started to keep under wraps in later life. Maybe he thought it was vulgar or something.
He was always misunderstood, (perhaps on purpose) even in his own country.
Бессмертный Аррау.
The applause started wayyyyyy too early :(
Kempff's play is much more to my taste. For this piece he had a magic touch. Too many miss the emotional by striking the keys too firmly and changing the piece.
I also prefer Kempff
Arrau said he hugely admired Kempff in general
Kempff didn't have the technique for this
Not liszt's greatest work. All those exhausting unvaried sequences... even Arrau cant save this one.
Not an expert, but the touch (?) Seems much better when Kempff does this piece. His seems to better capture the spiritual.
Especially because of the unpleasant hit and percussive sound in the fortes. What it is not to have a sensitive ear.
Es Muss Sein
Too heavy handed.
