Arrau could always produce a large scale sonority without banging the instrument. He had a natural muscular freedom, even when playing the most taxing of pieces such as the Dante Sonata. This is a superbly conceived account of this mighty work.

Fantastic voicing. What an ear and what the composer wrote. BRAVO!

Beautiful interpretation. So profund and full of details. He does not play it as a virtuoso...No doubt he studied in his youth with Martin Krause...

Arrau was such a good Liszt player even in his later years, it's unreal.

In fact, I think he was one of the greatest all-rounders in instrumental history. Doesn't matter what he played, it was always very good to excellent.

@@bryanshapiro6977 I was very young. I was impressed that a little old man could play so passionately and with such volume.

that was painfully horrible. Does he play the piano with a hammer?

@@carlosguzman97 yes pianos do in fact have hammers

I'll take Grimaud, 10,000:1 over Liszt/Arrau. Liszt too NON-melodic/dissonant....................prefer romantic over "macabre"

ahahahahah. I didn't know what to make of her interpretation of this piece. The piano first sounds like a guitar in some places. Then it sounds like she's playing Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition. There is no cohesion in her rendition and the pedaling leaves something to be desired.

This is literally the Dante sonata and you don’t want it to be macabre?
