Nice work it doesn’t matter how you get it done as long as you’re happy noise is gone the ones that sit on the couch and commenting and complaining about your job. They can’t appreciate the hard work you do and how much money you save 👍
Funny that you put this up today! I have an 06 Forester and dd an oil change and rotated my tires. Found a big glob of CV grease inside the rear wheel. And I look at the surrounding parts front and back and the rust is so bad that I don't think that it could be replaced. Not without replacing allot of other parts. Which is to bad it only has 77k on it. I live in the North East as well.
the bad bearings i replaced, i had them on my work bench, if you spin them slowly i was able to feel the small 'detentes' or notches, when rotating them. Got about 180k miles out of them.
About to change the rear wheel bearings on my winter rat, because the rumble, can't figure out where it's coming from. Hope it's not the diff It does appear that the wheel bearing are original with 230k miles. Rust doesn't normally lie.
I had a seal leak in the differential, so when I thoght I had a bad bearing, I will end up having to replace the diff (used a junkyard one) ... should have noticed the small oil puddle before the diff started whining/rumble :P but I've got a diesel, so lots of scrapped ones, so shouldt be a problem fining a good enough diff, only a matter of time until my engine gives up aswell :P
Once you got the bearings and backing plate separated from the knuckle, you can just pull that off the axle and then pound the bearing out of the backing plate. No need to use chisels.
