What do you think about this set? Are you excited about it? What new cards slot in perfectly to your existing commander decks?

This set is awesome because there aren’t any crazy busted chase cards that speed commander up too much, just some cool cards and cute creatures. I hope bloomburrow’s success while not having any overly pushed cards tells wizards that they dont need to push new cards to sell packs, they just need to create cool sets

I don't see anyone mentioning Hunter's Talent, it's by far the card that has been slotted into the 99 of my decks the most. It's a bite, it pumps and gives trample, and gives card draw. Insane card. Also fits with your discussion of strong 2 drops in the set. Thickest in the Thicket is also really good for +1/+1 counter decks and power matters decks, and The Master Multiplied absolutely loves Echoing Assault.

On the discussion of Perch Protection, I actually do have Eon Frolicker in my Kros Goad deck and it too has won me games.
The trick is to gift the extra turn to the most aggro player on the table, since their deck is the one least likely to kill you at instant speed once you come back.
Also, because I’m a Goad player, I can dictate who is swinging where, thus ensuring the aggro player won’t be coming at me (at least until everyone else is dead).

The thing I love about Gift in general is that it will make players think about what they're getting and not so much about downsides, which is what we (and by we I mean "people who like to play white a lot") were already doing. It's nice to hear the same arguments that I (and others) used to defend cards like Secret Rendezvous used again to praise Gifts. I love Pollywog Prodigy, it rewards you for curving out with creatures. I don't think it's stronger than 2 drop ramp or makes it less powerful, but some decks want 2 drop ramp while others will want 2 drop creatures. Everything isn't homogeneous and their effectiveness doesn't have to be exclusive. While Ledger Shredder probably is too strong, I like all the other 2 drop value creatures we've been getting and I want more of them so there's actually a decent probability of having one in my opening hand or drawing into it by turn 2.

Mockingbird instantly found a home in my Volo, Guide to Monsters deck. There aren't that many good Bards in Magic, and being able to pay X to copy two separate things on the battlefield but with flying is very nice, and it beats out Birds of Paradise as just another mana dork (when we have so many mana dorks). Other Bloomburrow highlights include Scrap Shooter (raccoons and archers are both thin on the ground so this does great without overlapping with other types) and Tender Wildguide, which won the elusive Druid spot in my deck because it's potentially 4 mana for 4 mana dorks that can get bigger if they're not doing anything better.

Definitely agree that targeted removal and or any spells or abilities that target are becoming insufficient mostly due to ward. But, I think that cards like soul shatter, make an example, sheoldred’s edict, unexplained absence, olorin’s searing light, shadowgrandge archfiend, highcliff felidar, enigma sphinx e.c.t. are better options to switch out for removal than putting more board wipes not only strategically but also ensuring that games aren’t getting reset every turn cycle. You still are able to get rid of multiple threats and get around ward. One sided board wipes like ruinous ultimatum, kindred dominance, crux of fate, whelming wave, perplexing test, wave goodbye, (more expensive plague wind or in garruks wake for decks that can ramp fast or cheat spells out.) are good against offspring and ward and allows to keep your resources which is good for you and your opponents because non-onesided board don’t always develop the game. hopefully offspring doesn’t become as common as ward has become even though I like the ability it feels like it can create less of a singleton format which I’m not a fan of. when a card has a stapled in value engine as well as a way to create a second one that is a token which can be doubled with effects like doubling season or second harvest doesn’t exactly feel like I’m only playing with one copy in my deck and because it’s an ability on the card itself it’s is not the same as a clone effect because adding a clone to your deck is a deck building choice where this becomes more of a mana based choice. Meaning even if I have no insensitive or desire for clone strategies in a deck I’m building I might still add a card with offspring because of how generically good the card is and now I’m playing with a card that essentially has 2 copies (1 optional) that if you have enough mana for is usually better to make 2.

I cast Perch Protection in a game yesterday, and it was an amazing experience! I had a stable board, but two players were way ahead, and one of them, who was going right after me, was a bit behind. I cast the spell targeting that next player, and he ended up taking out one of the other players and leaving the other one with low life. When it got back to me, I was able to finish with a win. I think the most interesting part of this card is that it can help bring a player who's behind back into the game, trying to balance the board, or take out two threats that your deck might struggle with, clearing the way for a win! But you always have to keep in mind that the playgroup really influences how things go. We had a lot of laughs and had a great time!

Thanks for the set review. Per usual there were a few cards you covered that I missed. Here are a few additional cool interactions that stood out to me when reviewing the set:
    - Both Octomancer and Fecund Greenshell are excellent targets for cards that create token copies of creatures, like Quasiduplicate. Fecund Greenshell (like Risen Reef before it) is even better if you create multiple token copies of it at the same time, like with Rite of Replication, as all the tokens enter will see each other.
    - Mocking Bird has a neat interaction with animated lands. If your deck can do that reliably, like in Jolrael, voice of Zhalfir, mocking bird is a 1-mana Copy Land for your own lands in addition to all the other things it does.
    - Season of Gathering’s first mode doesn’t target, so it also works on your creatures with shroud, like OG Multani.

I just built around Laughing Jasper Flint, and I realized that it is way more impactful for me to hit an Outlaw on turns 1 and 2, then cast Jasper. I gave the player who was behind (Magus) the extra turn on turn 7 because the Tatsunari player was definitely set up to win. The Magus player couldn’t do anything to the Tatsunari player and ended up winning while I was phased out 😂

My favorite thing to do in standard right now is to have Fecund Greenshell on the board and then Season of Weaving make 2 copies and get 5 turtle triggers from it (and often results in +6/+6 to each)

So, I recently had a game with Perch Protection that I feel talked about. 3 of us were looking for how to deal with a more problem player. 1 had enough damage on board, but a Maze of Ith situation was keeping lethal off the problem player. She attacked to at least keep the pressure up, and after the Maze happened I used this and gifted the extra turn. The other 3 of us were close enough in board state that we could fight it out. I managed to win off of it, but giving the extra turn as a "go kill him for us all" was a great way to also keep the dying player from messing with me via death triggers on creatures. I feel like the perch is more about you sitting on high, sending your minions.

I do think Perch Protection has some huge upsides compared to Eon Frolicker. Frolicker is cast on your turn, and mainly protects you from being attacked by the chosen player. Perch is cast at instant speed, it protects your board, and it protects you from being attacked by all players.

I've cast Perch Protection once so far and it won the game, or at least secured the win. I was the archenemy and P3 tried to wrath the board to bring me back down to earth, I cast Perch Protection and gifted the extra turn to P2 who had already gone. The extra turn just meant P2 got a head start rebuilding after the wrath, but I then untapped with my already scary board + 4 2/2 birds.
yeah, if you give a turn to someone who has a strong board position they're going to do scary stuff with it, but if you cast it to dodge a wrath and give the turn to the person most wrecked by it, it's similar to what Josh said about an early game Expropriate being less impactful

I think the main part about Fecund Greatshell, is tha being a calamity beast, and one of bountiful growth, it is likely so much larger than the birds (as seen in the art) that it's just difficult (in lore) for the birds to fly much higher than it and still be effective at their roles (of supporting non-fliers in this set).

I don't think that's it. If you look at the art, the flowers on its back have little red spore projectiles that are knocking a bunch of birds out of the sky. I think they just wanted it to have reach for.... idk, limited balance reasons?.... and then had the artist draw up some answer for that lol.

Hard to give analysis on whether cards are useful in the 99 or not if you have never played them in a real setting. If they did this video during prerelease then it would be mostly just assumptions on play patterns and maybe even information they would have to backpedal on.

@@bloodfang100 that doesn't matter. People just want to know what cards are good even if they end up being wrong later. It happens all the time.

Perch Protection has a weird benefit in the event you would lose immediately along with all your enemies except the threatening player, as you can gift the turn to somebody who is already dead, getting the full upside without actually gifting the extra turn.

I don't know if you guys were just explaining it poorly, but Perch Protection does not have the ability to skip past someone's turn entirely. It almost never will give someone 2 turns in a row because of how it actually works. The turn is inserted into the turn order, which resumes once that turn is complete.

Perch Protection is not (only) a protection spell, is a reversal, a kind of finisher. I won twice the two times I casted it because you are going to have board, that also flies. One sided board wipe? One player is really ahead? two are ahead? Okay, give the extra turn to the player that you know needs it or you know you can beat and "work together and search for responses"... Then you untap with ALL YOUR BOARD UNTOUCHED (not only the 4 2/2 birds) and win the game.

I played against a friend who used Perch Protection and it almost won him the game! It was a pod of 5 and 4 of us were playing the Bloomburrow Precons. It was down to myself playing Family Matters, another playing Peace Offering, and a third with Miirym (Animated Army and Squirreled Away were elminiated). The Peace Offering played Perch Protection, gifting me an extra turn which actually saved him. On my gifted turn I played Martial Coupe for 10 which triggered both of my Agate Instigators, eliminating Miirym who had an insane boardstate at this point. On my second turn I did my best to rebuild. Peace Offering would have won if it wasn't for the Artherize in my hand. The second turn honestly did not make that much a difference in the end because I only played my commander and one other creature on my second turn.

One extremely specific situation happened the other day where perch protection would have saved me. An opponent assembled his combo with Beacon of Tomorrows, drawing his entire deck, casting an omniscience, and dealing damage to everone equal to cards drawn. I played teferi’s protection, and he had no way to kill me until it wore off and came back to him. We realised that he was dead from drawing from an empty library next turn, so he dug and managed to find a way to put a single extra card back in his deck. Perch would have killed him just from having another extra turn!

The funny thing to do with Perch is to use it when everyone will die and give the turn to another player that'll die.
Like an earthquake for lethal or some life drain shennanigans.
You survive, they die before they get the turn and hopefully you have the clap back.
Super situational though and honestly probably not strong enough at any table that would use it optimally.
Cool card though, it makes you think. Hopefully it doesn't ruin low level games like paradox engine did.
