Zhongli lets Xiao go to clear that concern of the last yaksha general by himself, but at the same time Zhongli couldn't afford losing Xiao. The way Xiao seeking Zhongli's approval to leave his position and Zhongli looking after Xiao from afar emphasizes their strong bond. The JP VAs did such a good job on the tone of their short conversation. Very well done!
Zhongli never went into the Chasm himself, there are fan theories that the closer to the Abyss one gets, the weaker an Archon's power becomes. So for him to send his divine powers remains to save Xiao is pretty big in its self, he did something essentially blind, in a space that wasn't technically in reality anymore.
xiao main here. this whole archon quest is just amazing; hooked me the entire time. got me tearing up and when his theme played in a melancholic way as he sacrificed himself, my heart broke.
The archon quest was reaaaally long but I was hooked the whole time. No boring npc side quests, great chemistry between characters, appropriate comic relief from itto, great voice acting, fun domain mechanics, great lore, epic cutscenes, and just Xiao's existence in general made this my favorite archon quest. I didn't have high expectations for this patch but it turned out much better than I thought
@@h1retsuna Zhongli isn't like that, to him everyone has their own contracts that bind them, just like him, so for Xiao to ask for permission to go down, that meant to Zhongli that Xiao's 'contract' with Bosacious was yet to be fulfilled. To him, Xiao was facing a terrible danger to heal the pain he'd suffered for hundreds of years. Gotta remember that Xiao is the youngest of the Yaksha's in that group, the least experienced in fighting AND in being human, the others seem to have already lived great lives full of love and joy, Xiao lingers on the threshold though until this archon quest. So it's more like Xiao was simply telling a superior that he'd have to leave his post protecting Liyue to go on a selfish quest, while Zhongli simply warns him of the dangers to HIMSELF before giving his blessing. Gotta read between the lines on that guy, he's cryptic when he wants to be like Venti, just less sass about it.
Amazing scene. I have to give Yanfeis jp Va her props her voice is so attractive, and when she was telling Xiao that he was about to lose his strength, you could hear the shaking in her voice like she was about to break down and cry. Also when he came back her gasp really sound like she was truly afraid and worried about him, her VA did an amazing job at conveying those emotions

Xiao falling so peacefully tore my heart out… also the moment Xiao looked up and immediately without any hesitation saved all of us. “General Alatus, falling in!” All of the characters showing their care for Xiao in some way, and as someone pointed out which I didn’t realize until then, that all the characters here parallel the yakshas elements… he’s my favorite character, I just want him to be happy so badly 😭😭🥺
When i saw xiao falling i knew zhongli would save him but still that %1 chance for him to fall i got so sad :' The way he closed his eyes.. Like he is finally can rest broke my heart

That explains why there are so many casualties when he was away 500 years ago. Besides losing Yakshas, he also had to seal away Azdaha. At this point I hope Hoyoverse doesn't do anything cruel, like keeping characters alive but have us seeing them lose their sanity. And worst of it all, fight them like how Zhongli had to fight Azdaha.
Hats off to Yelan and Xiao's VA, Aya Endo and Matsuoka Yoshitsugu for the voice acting in this event. When he screamed General Alatus it gave me goosebumps. Ofcourse the others did really well too (Itto, Yanfei, Shinobu, Paimon) but I don't remember their names lmao PS. Aren't Xiao and Yelan's VAs mother and child in SAO? lol
What I liked about this archon quest was that everyone had a role to play and heavily contributed to the survival and escape of the group. It was not all left to one character to save them all. For once, it was refreshing to see that the plot didn’t hinge on the Traveler’s success or intervention.
I prefer the JP translation of what Zhongli says to Xiao. He doesn't say "yet you still insist on going." He says, 'do you really have to go' which I think speaks volumes for how much he cares about Xiao (Not saying Keith wasn't great in voicing his ENG dub, I just prefer the line that was said in JP). Also, Xiao actually calling him Rex Lapis when he was asking for his permission. ;A; I was in literal tears after this goddamn quest. Hoyoverse, was my money not enough that you had to demand for my tears too???

I don't think they will kill him off as that's the opposite of what Xiao's story is about. Xiao is the kind of character that doesn't think he deserves to live, likely because of guilt as the last surviving Yaksha or guilt over the millenia he has spent slaughtering beings left and right. This quest really highlighted his suffering and his twisted mindset of how little he values himself, at the same time it nudged him in the right direction thanks to the Traveler, Yelan, Yanfei, Paimon, Shinobu, Itto, and even Ushi. In fact, when he says that he didn't mind dying at that moment to save the others, the Traveler calls him out and says that he knows that he doesn't really believe that, to which Xiao agrees and says it might be his own form of insanity (from karmic debt) that's making him so obsessed with dying. The Chasm gang, and maybe Zhongli as well, were the ones who convinced him that he doesn't have to sacrifice himself just because he's a yaksha, that he doesn't have to meet the same fate as his fallen comrades, and that he deserves to live. It's precisely why they named his banner "Invitation to Mundane Life".
This shows that hyvrs wont be afraid to "off" a playable chara, they're just teasing it every single time, just wait for the right time..someone is really gonna die T.T i hope this is not true ;-;
