I loved this band in the 90s just because they utterly rocked and rolled, but only now, revisiting them in 2021 am I appreciating their incredible artistry. What a trip!
The father of a girl who fell in love with me showed me this band. He works for Sabian, the company. He's into all that good shit. You can never really appreciate how much they put into these songs. Gotta sit down and actually listen. Good songs for both chilling and feeling.
I remember riding around with my uncles and listening to this album when I was like 9. Nothing beats the 90's. Glad I got to experience that awesome decade..
Third eye blind is the best band, kick ass guitar riffs, amazing vocals and lyrics, bad ass beats and smooth bass lines, cant get much better than that
1:51 The drums kick the doors in and that's when the song starts firing on all cylinders. One of my all time favorite songs. This and Lust For Life always remind me of 1998. Such an exciting year.
Wow I love this song. Idk if the singer is narcoleptic but It so perfectly captures what it feels like to have narcolepsy. It alone and drowning, desperately trying to swim out of jt but the nightmares keep pulling you back. People talk about wanting to have more vivid and lucid dreams but all I want is to be less in touch with my subconscious dream self.
@trimiynchan i completely agree. i also have narcolepsy and i was happy to find a good song that wasn't making fun of it. barely anyone understands what the disease really is.
"And there's a bone in my had that connects to a drink In a crowded room where all the glasses clink" What an amazing line. And then that solo at 2:11....
no one in third eye blind has narcolepsy, Kevin Cadogan, their guitarist had a sleep disorder that was a symptom of narcolepsy and he asked Stephan to write a song about what he was feeling, (that's not verbatim, but you get the idea). If you want to read the whole quote about the song, I know stephanjenkins(dot)com has it.
@CoolConejo Not sure what you mean about passing out-if you are referring to what the doctors call a 'sleep attack' -then yes, I dream. I always dream-sometimes it's ok, but many times it isn't. Because Narcolepsy is characterized by the ability to hit the REM phase with the onset of sleep-we dream, and it's vivid. This is what makes the song even more powerful, while just having it is the nightmare, we are no strangers to actual nightmares.
Nacrcolepsy, characterized by being drowsy or fall asleep or just be very tired throughout the day, often at inappropriate times and places. Daytime naps may occur with little warning and may be physically irresistible. These naps can occur several times a day. They are typically refreshing, but only for a few hours. Drowsiness may persist for prolonged periods of time. In addition, night time sleep may be fragmented with frequent awakenings.
one of the ways they diagnose narcplepsy is early onset of REM or dream sleep....hence the line "I can feel this narcolepsy slide into another nightmare
narcolpesy is a terrible desease. im also a patient and lucky that im not the worst off. i found this on a narcolepsy website and just had to command that its SO DAMN AMAZING that there is a song about this ilness!!!!! *hardly anyone ((in our country)) knows about this desease so...*
Severely underrated track. I miss the 90s ha... But it's not just nostalgia either. "The Background" and this track is still fucking amazing. The whole album was quality.👌
this song IS narcolepsy: keeps me from falling asleep keep awake, keep awake, keep awake i lay me down but i get no release and I close my eyes and dream that I'm awake The last is the worst
You have to develop a sense of humor in order to survive. The best comedians excel because they are hurting inside and twist the pain around. Humor may not make you feel better per se, but it helps you relate to other 'normal' people where there would otherwise be a barrier. I'm talking from experience. I am not sure if it is you or I who is lucky as I wasn't born with my issues. I'm listening to this to bring back memories of the days when I was 'normal.' It seems like a dream.
I'll remember you said that the next time an employer fires me over it completely ignoring the American's with Disability Act, and like the song says, how'd you like to be alone and drowning-think about that for a second.
Yeah, I have automatic behaviors, twitches, shakes, chills, stretches. I do things I have no recollection of. The lyrics to this song describe the pain of narcolepsy very very well. There is no rest, you run on autopilot for years. The people around you think you are lucid and you are not. You feel uncomfortable 100% of the time. You lose track of long periods of time. You mix up your dreams and reality. Relationships are too painful and do not last. Sometimes you will beg for death.
@cocainebuffet I don't know if you're cracking a joke or not, but because of Narcolepsy, I have VERY vivid dreams, nightmares that would make you piss your pants, almost nightly, and the overall nightmare of dealing with something that not many people understand-at all, hence the line, how'd you like to be alone and drowning, that's EXACTLY how I feel, and it's not fun.
I have Epilepsy so I understand how it is having a disability and people making fun of it...but that's how it's always going to be. People are ignorant and inconsiderate. I'm not saying you have to be okay with what they're saying, but at some point, you have to accept that they're saying it and the only people who look bad because of it is them. Here if you ever need to talk about it by the way :)
@queenvelvet Yes, I was actually in several clinical trials for Xyrem-works great, better than anything I have ever taken for narcolepsy. I currently have no medical insurance and cannot afford the medication, would be really nice to have that right now.
Does the singer actually suffer from Narcolepsy? Because everyone tells me this is just a metaphor, for losing control of your life, which if it was just the title line, I'd say okay, yeah, it's a metaphor, but a lot of the things he's describing are so accurate to the disease...at least the severity I have...I can't believe he wrote it just as a metaphor
Hey man, I can't say I know where you're coming from because I don't but I do know that if you keep letting shit like your disability get in the way of things you'll never be happy. One of my motto's is: No Worries. i try as best as I can to never let things drag me down.
IDK, it doesn't say anything about it on their website, and he's not listed on Wikipeadea's page of "Famous Narcoleptics" But he might just not broadcast it
Did anyone know that narcolepsy has a common symptom known as automatic behavior?Which is subconsciously spitting out words and shit and not remembering what you said after. My girl just left after 7 years living together for another guy. I don't sleep much but i love 3EB.
Yes, talk to my lawyer and the CA Dept. of Fair Employment and Housing and ask them how my former employer got off on a technicality-I won the appeal for Unemployment, but lost the wrongful termination complaint. I've never been discriminated for anything, least of all something so blatant. My only hope is Karma will do its work, so far their business has slowed to almost nothing.
@cocainebuffet No, it's not. If you had ever experienced symptoms associated with narcolepsy, it would make a lot more sense. The song writer had experienced something called sleep paralysis, which I have quite often, along with other characteristics like hypnogogic hallucinations, i.e., the vivid nightmares. So he wrote a song about it. Did this happen because he was high? Probably not as you would just typically pass out-something I would rather have than this other crap.
zizwop You might not give a crap anymore given this is a 5 year old comment now lol but anyway.. As far as I'm aware Sleep Paralysis and Sleep Hypnogognia are the same thing. I hear that terrifying hallucinations are common with this sleep disorder. I've had it my whole life too. Once I learned more about the neurological nature of the condition I learned to control the fear associated with a SP episode. There's a part in the brain responsible for fear and the sense of a threatening presence, which is what manifests as scary shit. ie. We create it. Monsters, demons, aliens, Oprah etc.. Being aware of this fact while you're paralyzed but lucid, resist the tendency for escalation of the fear towards abject terror. This will allow you to have Sleep Paralysis with positive experiences instead of horrific ones. It is an act of will, no it's not easy and takes practice but I think anyone with SP could learn to do it. Try cracking some jokes at "it" during your next SP. If you can focus on the funny side of it, you might be amazed at how it changes. I have full control over my Sleep Paralysis now. I still get paralyzed but I'm able to control the hallucinations to do what *I* want. If you can master it, it's worth it.
@zizwop as weird as it may be, i am someone with narcolepsy too, havent had it as long as you, but i do have it and know where you are coming from. however that cocaine guy there...just forget him. drug heads dont understand it. i added one...i will admitt that he did try, really hard. but you cant understand it unless you have it.
+Concepcion Regalado its about the singer waking up but half asleep and being unable to move, not about narcolepsy or PTSD, its about his personal experience.
+White Star, Lol, I realized that the first time someone commented. But thanks for informing me about how it was actually his experience, I didn't know that. :)
+White Star - sleep paralysis- thats interresting, i have sleep paraysis up to 10x's weekly...terrified me as a kid, but because i get it so often, i kinda am "aware" of what it is while in the state...if you know what i mean by that lol!
Why is it the 90s gets Third Eye Blind and the 00s gets Nickelback? I'm technically a 90s kid but far too young to have listened to any music in that era
So in love with this song. Third Eye Blind is highly underrated.
Best album of 1997 and one of the very best albums of the past 30 years.
I loved this band in the 90s just because they utterly rocked and rolled, but only now, revisiting them in 2021 am I appreciating their incredible artistry. What a trip!
The father of a girl who fell in love with me showed me this band. He works for Sabian, the company. He's into all that good shit.

Gotta sit down and actually listen.
Good songs for both chilling and feeling.
I remember riding around with my uncles and listening to this album when I was like 9. Nothing beats the 90's. Glad I got to experience that awesome decade..
One of the best songs on the CD and the whole CD is awesome.
I love the solo. Also, my mom has narcolepsy and it’s a terrible disease. Thanks Third Eye Blind for bringing awareness to this disease.
This is the best song of the 90's. It's beautiful!
Third eye blind is the best band, kick ass guitar riffs, amazing vocals and lyrics, bad ass beats and smooth bass lines, cant get much better than that

I'll forever have a soft spot for this track, and "The Background." The whole album was therapeutic for me haha 💥🎸.
It's a shame that so little people know about this band! I try to keep awake..
Incredible track right? "The Background" is another gem. It's more than just nostalgia too. Amazing writing, and sonically it's still beautiful.
Wow I love this song. Idk if the singer is narcoleptic but It so perfectly captures what it feels like to have narcolepsy. we all walk alone. thank you 4 sharing the lyrics. love all the songs on this album. they say what i cannot.
Narcolepsy is a condition that makes you fall asleep so the "How would you like to we alone and drowning" part is a hint to that.
Thank u so much Third eye Blind for trying to bring awareness to Narcolepsy. :) for the PWN or the people like me PWNC :) THANKS :)
Sian Lewis what is pwn(c)?
damn i love this band, specially this song..
@trimiynchan
i completely agree. i also have narcolepsy and i was happy to find a good song that wasn't making fun of it. barely anyone understands what the disease really is.
growing up in the 90's led me to this song \m/
Really good song on a really good album
theres a demon in my head that starts to play a nightmare tape of what went wrong yesterday love that part
Such an underrated band
"And there's a bone in my had that connects to a drink
In a crowded room where all the glasses clink"
What an amazing line. And then that solo at 2:11....
I love this song ! How'd you like to be alone and drowning?!
I love this song and the album great sounds
Great album
I listen to a lot of punk music, and I love 3EB. It's good to mix it up.
Narcoleptic here. This song is so f*ckin on point.
My punk friends in highschool used to make fun of me for listening to this album. Fuck em,I still like it :p .
Greatest band of all time
kevin cadogan is by far my second favourite guitarist. Legend.
no one in third eye blind has narcolepsy, Kevin Cadogan, their guitarist had a sleep disorder that was a symptom of narcolepsy and he asked Stephan to write a song about what he was feeling, (that's not verbatim, but you get the idea). If you want to read the whole quote about the song, I know stephanjenkins(dot)com has it.

the more i hear this song the better it is
I was just watching that and it reminded me of the song, and it got stuck in my head so i just had to listen to it.
Those words are WAY TOO FUCKING TINY!!

great song about despair....

Jericho episode 3 (ending) - led me to this song ^^

i fucking love this song omg

I don't think it is about narcolepsy. I think it is about depression.
Why is it the 90s gets Third Eye Blind and the 00s gets Nickelback? I'm technically a 90s kid but far too young to have listened to any music in that era
@zizwop i used to have to same dream all the time when i was snortin shit..
