I talked to Arvo Ojala a couple times on the phone in 1985 when I ordered a holster from him. I took the opportunity to badger him with questions including asking him if Marylin Monroe smelled good where he said, “yeah!”. I told him I had taped the film you featured, The Oregon Trail, and he sent me $5 in a great personalized letter and I sent him a VHS copy of it. He said it was the only movie where he had lines. He was a nice guy open to talk about his gun coaching exploits.
Yeah. I was a big cowboy fan when I was a kid in the '50's. When I was two I used to tell other kids my name was Roy Rodgers. I had a lot of toy guns and trained myself to fast draw with them. I broke my right arm and had to draw with my left hand so I got good with that too. Of course - I've no idea how fast I was. But I imagine it wasn't very fast. I saw this one thing about the Old Gun Fighter who trains a younger gun fighter - and then has to kill him when he challenges his mentor. In that - they showed the old gun fighter teaching the younger one - and his draw - was to cock the hammer with the heel of his hand as he moving his hand to the handle to draw the gun. Then he'd fire as soon as the barrel cleared the holster. So that is the way I would fast draw. The problem with that technique - is that if you don't fully cock the hammer with the heel of your hand - when you had moves to the handle - the hammer will fall forward and fire the gun .... I thought about fast drawing as an adult but I was afraid I's shoot myself in the foot - so I was doing it with a BB Gun Pistol - and yes - I eventually did shoot myself in the foot. Of course I wasn't injured by the BB Gun. I cut a holster down and put a leather thong attacked the the cinch at the middle of the holster that hooked over the hammer to keep the gun from falling out of the holster - which I'd seen in westerns. I did get a lot of use out of the gun and holster and a cowboy hat I got with some boots I bought as a costume for Halloween Parties. . . .
Best way is to cock with your thumb as you are going back and at the same time slightly rotate your hand so that the palm of the hand is behind the strap. Gives you more stability.
INTERESTING TRIVIA: The Old Time Radio broadcasts of GUNSMOKE has Marshall Dillon firing his handgun with his THUMB, not pulling the trigger. I am not sure about the TV version. It looks like Dillon pulls the trigger.
Fastest Sammy Davis Jr under •25 sec by Hugh Obŕian . Jerry Lewis was also faster, but both were not recorded (some believe Race was involved Black & Lewis' Jewish in 56 Actor Competition.
I don’t think Hugh ever came close to .25 seconds. I’ve been watching old episodes of Life and Times of Wyatt Earp. He was very good and obviously practiced a lot. But nothing close to .25.

Don't forget it was also revealed there was a lot of camera tricks when Steve McQueen was filmed
Hmmm not sure what you mean. No camera tricks in this clip. ruclips.net/user/shortsZscGFdxjGfo?feature=share

Hugh was shut down by Autie Murphy when challenged to a contest with live ammunition. Auntie was the real deal.
