The USS Discovery ventured out towards the last clue destination fully aware that the Breens will follow. Why? Why not just use another starfleet vessel for this mission? Discovery opting to go in blind and Burnham saying to the amiable smiling librarian something like: “hi, we come in peace, but there is a hostile world class warship tracking us and it will arrive shortly. Sorry about that“
I thought the mindscape was great. She believed the test was going to be an elaborate test and she tried several different attempts and the test was self reflection was perfect. They did release debris form the shuttle bays and storage areas. And Moll taking over the Breen's ship wasn't an all of the sudden thing. She had been speaking out against the the leaders action many time and they showed the crew looking uncomfortable with his decisions. I thought it was a great episode.
Burnham staring at the carpet while pouring sand from the bucket was just plain silly. Pop a hole in the bucket's underside so you can watch where your going. It's a maze for goodness sakes!

Been a trekkie for ages... and I "absorb" what the latest star trek series have to offer. To me when I watch - I watch. Often time awe at what new perspectives technology (movie and video) our era has to offer. Star Trek is star trek it offers a crew of militarised fleet now... set in quadrant enclosure... I am liking the evolution but not the advancement on portrayal. In this day and age it seems the first Star Trek movie has made more leap and bounds into the cinematic scope. Discovery being a TV series... like the others - I wouldn't expect too much. As always... my 2 cents.
I thought it was an okay episode. I did enjoy the scale of the Breen ship and learning more about them, as they are interesting to me. I was also expecting a Jocusta Nu ( Jedi librarian from the Star Wars Prequels) like archivist but I did enjoy the young, vibrant archivist. I have to agree with you that the Betazoid doctor should have been conversing with Burnham...it would have made much more sense. And I also agree that the Breen suddenly following Moll was too soon and for me it was far fetched. It could have been a better episode.
Does not mater if the other breen are on Mols side as long as Primarch Ruhn "Number One" is. And the way I've read Mols facial expression, she was rather sure the coup did not work until the very last moment.
Moll was manipulating the Lieutenant the same way that she did with L’ak. Both would not let the Primarch kill her. That moron lost the loyalty of his troops by breaking the tergun and showing his lack of devotion to the Scion. Moll seized the opportunity presented to her and got rid of the person who tried twice to have her executed.
I think this season has very good steady start and then suddendly all these plot lines got different speeds and at the same time characters got different dynamics (also probably due to actors availability). I feel it may be not as much a number of episodes responsible for it, (as Nick suggests)) but maybe the fact that decision to end Disco series came after they already started shooting? That probably caused changes in plot dynamics writers had to adapt & wrap up to the fact show was ending? t's just a thought. I personally got lost in overall arch (but that's only me), but visuals are impressive.
It's funny, that you have the opposite view about the badlands as a few other reviewers, in that they now have the technology to make it as they wanted to back then on DS9. Still, we got ride of the classic villain and see Moll take charge in the next episode!
Hi Nic, I would have to disagree on your take on the design of the Badlands. We are talking about 40 years of separate CGI designs. Of course they would update the look and feel of The Badlands, together with our better understanding of the universe through current scientific discoveries.
I think if it had the tornado vortexes that’d be enough to tie it together but I do understand that this is 800 years since we saw them last so they might have changed a bit over time I suppose.
I fell asleep twice trying to watch this episode. The last scene, the fall of Primarch Ruhn, was good. The librarian was a valley girl in a costume. That could have been done better.
I won't miss Discovery, and the over the top emotional relationships nonsense that goes on. So old. This episode started off pretty good, but landed in familiar territory- all about Burnham. It is more like a soap opera. Bring on Strange New Worlds. And hope they green light Legacy.
How did Magic Space Jesus Burnham know to stick her finger in the middle of that metal piece inside that book? Just like she figures out everything else? Like magic?
What gets me about this season is that they keep banging on about being worthy to attain each piece of the puzzle. Presumably the Breen wouldn’t be, so why don’t you let them just fail trying to get each piece because they’re not “worthy” enough to get them in the first place? And then they just got it all in the end? IT DOESNT MAKE SENSE. 🤦🏽♂️
In all honesty, I was expecting that the Primarch will be the main bad guy for the last few episodes, and Moll would become Discovery greatest ally at the finale.
I’m not shy about knowing I’m not a critic and I just like what I like. The pacing and missing characters in some sections are the first time I’m really able to notice what I think is shoddy work due to reshoots. The pacing on Mol taking over the Breen is an example. I could see what she was doing but I agree, this needed another episode to cook and bring out a Breen Dumar in an empathetic way. I also just didn’t listen at all to how she solved the last piece. Something something feelings.
Nick i think you missed the point of it being book, and lots of the small details. All your critiques stem from a lack of action, which you build yourself up to expect for some reason, instead of the actual content. Again we dont know enough on Breen society to know how much being a wife counts, or their hierachy. Plus he did break his word re attacking. Burnham giving up the location/clue (knowing there is another component only she knows), to save 1000+ lives on the library, is totally on brand for her, as she would back her crew to find a solution. Enjoy your review as always but i enjoyed this one, and left me wanting more (which doesn't always happen with Disco)
Your review of this episode is undercooked. This is the first time I found myself completely disagreeing with you. I think it has everything to do with what you wanted this episode to be, but wasn’t so you trashed almost every aspect of it. To each his own, I guess.
I'm perfectly capable of adjusting my expectations but I thought the setup/payoff on multiple plot points was lacking. That’s different that simply wanting it to be something different. Yes my review was probably harsher than usual but with only 2 episodes to go on the entire series I want it to go out in a kickass memorable way, not a lacklustre one.
Am I the only one seeing in the episode a general reference to the labyrinth in the library of the “Name on the rose” I was waiting for something more specific but I’ve seen a general recall to the library with the search of a disrupting important piece of knowledge hidden inside.
Nick. Do you realize that, in the four videos that you have posted showing Sneak Peak Scenes and Promo Photos for Episodes 7 and 8, you have shown Moll and Burnham fighting and the Breen ships in battle against the Discovery in all of them?
Yes I know - I was sure these shots would be in episode 8 as the location looked exactly like the library archive not to mention burnham stuck in a mindscape so everything seemed like a match based on what we knew about the episode. Only 2 episodes left but I think I’ll just stop speculating now.
I think the actors of Book and the Doctor must have a written into their contract that they're in every single episode because I think they all look like they're in crowbared then
I enjoyed the episode more than you, but I do find the lack of action this season a bit frustrating, especially after all the talk of this being a fun, Indy-style quest. Feels like the show has far less action in general than it did the first couple seasons.
It's fine and a sign of maturity - which Burnham desperately needs - to be able to acknowledge your weaknesses to another person. But IMHO that alone does NOT make you a person worthy of wielding godlike powers. Think how Q would have handled this with Picard. Once Picard admitted he had a tendency toward arrogance and didn't like kids very much, Q would have scoffed and said, "AAANNNDDD?" I do think it would have been great if pressing the diamond in the book had brought up the Betazoid scientist to be the guide/proctor. However, I loved seeing David Ajala in a completely different role.
@@gaileverett Eh it is always about Burnham and that has always been the problem. Well at least the main one. I had no issues with Book. I just wish they would not shoe horn him into thing's and write something allowing him to be apart of whatever story it is. Without it feeling like it was forced.
10 Episodes is just an excruciatingly short window to tell these always epic in scale stories properly. I get modern streaming budgets etc... but I think a lot of the complaints in your review boil down to that. Why do the Breen pivot to Moll so quickly? They don't, this has been brewing, but because the writers don't have the episode hours to show, they end up having to tell us that the Breen have an honor code, that they value their antiquities, and that the Primarch is clearly one of six Primarchs that is vying for power and not doing it in a way that everyone agrees with. He would violate a blood oath and fire on the library. If we knew the Breen like we know the Klingons, you wouldn't be shocked at all that they are pretty okay with his death. It's consistent with what we've been told about the Breen but with only ten episodes we have no way of sitting with them to get to know their motivations earlier in the season. Same thing with the final challenge - we want it to be action driven, but that's not consistent with the story so far. The Betazoid would, of course, make the final challenge about inner knowledge and self analysis. DUH in retrospect. But a character driven final challenge makes even more sense two episodes out from the end of a ten episode final season - the next two, I'm certain will feature more action because these things always go out with a bang.
I usually am on the same page as you with most of your comments and thoughts about discovery, maybe not so much this episode though. I do agree that the massive Breen troops we saw at the start and then never getting to have that translate into those troops being used in motion or to overwhelm some place was a bit of a bummer.. For a couple of my disagreements though, Re: the librarian, you had commented in the last video about a "valley girl" accent and also mentioned Legally Blonde, I didn't think the librarian sounded like a valley girl at all, also, =you keep talking about "old librarians" but have you been to a library in the past couple decades? In my experience, modern librarians ARE (often very) quirky ppl and most of those I've met are peppy, enthusiastic women and men so I felt their librarian was spot on. Re: "Book wearing a dress" I never though it was a dress, thought it was just an overcoat as is the old style ON TOP of dresses that have larger crinolines so I just thought - who cares lol. Lastly though I agree that it was sort of rushed and Burnam handing over the entire puzzle was odd as was Mol being boss-mode to the Breen so quickly.
Very disappointing episode. When Burnham started acting like she was working with her physciatrist , the story lost me. It felt tired, like the writers had no new ideas for this episode. The whole Breen scene with the betrayal was very obvious; we knew the result before it was even acted out on screen. Only 2 episodes left so I do hope the intensity picks up.
I can’t wait either, that way you may stop bitching about a series you do not like, but refuse to not watch it. That seems pretty smart. It’s not how I would approach it. I can not stand Lower Decks (another Star Trek show) and guess what? I didn’t watch it and write comments bitching about how much I hate it. I just left it to those who did enjoy it. See how that works? Alright, now you can aim all of your piss and vinegar at me.
I like the episode, but I’m tired of this 32nd century tech being so bad. Suddenly the badlands just take out the shields… and a ship the size of the dreadnaught can get into the badlands??? And the “I can’t treat him here” bs… I’m getting a bit tired of the lazy writing that disables technology when it’s convenient for the story. Seriously though, David A’s acting is incredible. It is real and natural raw emotion. Michael’s is getting tired and fake… at least one of the bridge crew got some real action. Also the “let’s think it out” sessions, and Tig’s character just being the shoehorn for everything… ahhhhhh I love start trek but I’m getting tired. This is literally the single TNG episode spread into 10… the greatest treasure hunt. The end of the show is this: Lok is resurrected, and becomes the benevolent emperor because the federation was nice to him. Paul dies stopping Dr Culver from sacrificing himself to destroy the technology, making him the one to die, cause they won’t kill the Dr again… otherwise, what is the “I’m feeling spiritual” line about from past episodes… progenitors tech is gone, been are now solid faced and friends, discovery can’t jump anymore cause stamina is gone, and probably gets retired, probably have a shot of the discovery -b at the end, with a let’s fly as the last line. This is much too obvious. And 90% of this will happen.
So basically Moll pulled a L’Rell. It looks like the final season is on the same trajectory as the rest of the series. A good build up in the first few episodes. Then a pointless and long wild goose chase that leads to some disappointing deus ex machina resolution. Typical Discovery.
I had to rewatch it this morning again because I thought I missed something as it didn't make sense. It was just the whole episode that ws a dissapoinment
I wouldn't be surprised if the finale is gonna be worse the enterprise these are the voyages only difference is enterprise final season is watchable discovery isn't
I think you nailed it. As much as I want to like this final season and the whole treasure hunt thing, I’m just left feeling like it’s lacking. They are trying to take the TNG episode The Chase and turn it into a full season, which I like. They’re just not executing it in a way that satisfies the fans. I appreciate Discovery for bringing us all the series that followed, but it has been the least enjoyable show so far and doesn’t hold a lot of rewatch value for me.
I’ve not seen it yet, the promo looked like it would be action packed. I assumed it would be. Attack attack - pause, talk about your feelings - space battles - hold, but how do you feel in yourself? Seems I know my Disco! Don’t think I’ll bother anymore. Hey Nick, are you going to do a Doctor Who review? Space Babies! 🤮
@@Sci-Finatics first episode is a shocker, Not sure who their audience is anymore. Just childish. I really enjoyed the second episode, there are bits that are a bit hmm, but a fantastic moment with Ruby, the Doctor and a piano. There is this very out of place song and dance at the end of episode 2 that would have been ok if put at the end of the credits. The lyrics are worse than the “diddly-deet you” Goblin song. Skip babies but 2nd episode might be worthy. It’s frustrating because the backlash is so extreme against the show but RTD seems to be handing them their points on a silver platter.
This was so incredibly boring with on and on talking and emotions once again. It felt like I was watching Wonder Woman 1984 and I just couldn't wait for it to finally end.
Book cries🙄 because of his witch hazel. Then Burnham cries 🙄because, "I can't do it." Oh, that's what we wanted. You won... 🥱Then I cried, not because I was so touched, but because of the lazy writing of the script...again🥺😩😤💣. And what's wrong with these Breen, aren't they different species, which was actually their strength? This feels like a cheap mix of Romulans and Borg that sounds like Vader, only without being taken seriously. At least Burnham admitted she was ashamed to deliver something like that👍🖖
There is a thin line between being a critic and a hater. I have been watching you for while. talk about discovery and I have come to the conclusion that you are a hater of this show. I can accept criticism but as a critic to pick your words carefully and not try to put on what your personal wishes are for the show.
If I hated the show I wouldn’t watch or review it. I enjoy it, I just want it to be better. And it frustrates me when it falls short. I’d like nothing more than for it to be on par with other great star trek series. Everyone knows my channel that’s been going for 5 years it isn’t hater channel.
Over all I liked the episode but this Breens thing.... The Primarch acting too stupid, Loosing the map to them was too predictable, I can see how the show finale will be
The test being one of Burnham's character was completely obvious. And for a Captain, she is apparently very mentally fragile. Based on what she said, she would score very high for neroticism, which doesn't seem in line with her character.and came out of nowhere. The Breen seem silly and generic with the overly villainous voicing instead of the mysterious electronic sound. Finally, Mol taking control of the Breen was an absolute laughingstock.
How about the librarian is the next Generation librarian and you guys once again are not true fans because if you are too fast you would accept the trilogy and go with the story but you're not I like all the seasons cuz each season is connected to a much bigger story and how much you like the characters you're going to expect some of them are going to die and some of them would be different how but this is the decision of the writers and the writers have a right it's called creative writing people and Star Trek is created by a United States company then yeah there's a freedom of speech
I know why it's because back then we don't have the technology we do now. Same with the whole holodeck, thing too we just didn't have the technology back then. Look it's the same story it's the same Trilogy you're just picky and you're not a true fan if you're a true fan you accept all the episodes all the seasons cuz they're connected to one another a truth and goes with the story none of you are true fans you're entitled people who want things your way sorry that's not how the world works
I do agree that this episode lacked so much more potential. They did definitely rush through this episode just like the entire season. Maybe it is time to end Star Trek discovery
This has got to be the dumbest comment on this thread. Complaining that there are still BOOKS in the 32nd century is WILD!! 🤯 You should pay a visit to a museum sometime
Ha! This review describes why I really do not like this version of Start Trek. "Woke" Discovery. A ship full of emotionally damaged people all having a collective nervous breakdown that requires a lifetime of daily appointments with a therapist just to get through life. Constantly in need of having their egos stoked and wining about how bad life is and how your feelings are hurt.
This is by far the dumbest episode in Trek I've ever seen. I really wish I could "unsee" it, yet I can't. Discovery has always been a mixed bag and I did understand the criticism quite often, yet this episode takes the cake. This is the "Treshold" or "Code of honour" of Discovery. What is logic? What is canon? What is established style? F*ck that! We'll just ignore everything and look how it works out. This is the final insult. I'm not gonna watch any more episodes of this bs and I think about sueing the producers for emtional damage and compensation. This is by far the worst Trek has to offer.
This is the latest american junk film as of May 2024. The season 5 up to ep.9 has no point at all. It is not only the worst season ever, and also the worst star trek film ever. I get borded that they just keep expressing emotional feeling and the story line is terrible without doing sci-fi stuff. Glad that this crappy series will be eventually ended soon.

To be fair, having a Betazoid hiding a clue and having it be about inner feelings and emotions is not a stretch.
Yes, but it made for a bit of an anti-climactic episode.
The telepathic message that book saw was 800 years old and showed the badlands. But now they said the ship was moving every 50 years and only now reached the badlands . So how could it have been recorded 800 years ago
Yeah I get the connection I just thought it could have been more engaging.
Sure but why not have a Betazoid play the role?
They have made the Breen look like clowns in no time after years of them being the coolest almost unknown badasses.
I will say that Discovery has become one bad ass ship. Loved how it stood up to such an assault at the end and the explosive jump out of there.
Other than the blowtorch fragile bridge........
"STOOD" being the operative word!

As always... my 2 cents.
I thought that the Archives would have had a lot better technology to protect its contents against a Breen attack.
Exactly! And the Breen got through the Badlands pretty easily.
Book gets to take off his winter jacket.
Ermagurd! If you do an entire episode review in your librarian voice,I might pee my pants!
I think you missed so much in the details and deep profundity in this episode, Nick.
Still, I always appreciate your reviews. LLAP, my friend 🙂🖖
LOL STD is profound. OK
I think if it had the tornado vortexes that’d be enough to tie it together but I do understand that this is 800 years since we saw them last so they might have changed a bit over time I suppose.
gotta say i agree fully with ya man . good review
I fell asleep twice trying to watch this episode. The last scene, the fall of Primarch Ruhn, was good. The librarian was a valley girl in a costume. That could have been done better.
😂😂me too. And yes the last scene was good
I liked it. Enjoy while you can.
I did, too.
I like this season the best. I agree that some plotlines are not very believable but I enjoyed it nevertheless
I think that Nic is being a little nit-picky about this episode. It may not have been as flashy as he'd like, but this is a good episode!
🎯
Your review of this episode is undercooked. This is the first time I found myself completely disagreeing with you. I think it has everything to do with what you wanted this episode to be, but wasn’t so you trashed almost every aspect of it. To each his own, I guess.
I'm perfectly capable of adjusting my expectations but I thought the setup/payoff on multiple plot points was lacking. That’s different that simply wanting it to be something different. Yes my review was probably harsher than usual but with only 2 episodes to go on the entire series I want it to go out in a kickass memorable way, not a lacklustre one.
@@Sci-Finatics A reviewer should not use the words “I want it.” At that point, you are just a fan.
I think the writers are more focused on filling out job applications...
Maybe, or they may write for SF Academy (wouldn't that be hhhhhmmmm)
I like the plot of the bad land, not back to Voyager
I think the actors of Book and the Doctor must have a written into their contract that they're in every single episode because I think they all look like they're in crowbared then
Don't be over critical. They have an overall budget for the season, and move the money around for better effects at different episodes.
"Don`t be over critical" just consume huh! You guys are too much!
I enjoyed the episode more than you, but I do find the lack of action this season a bit frustrating, especially after all the talk of this being a fun, Indy-style quest.
Feels like the show has far less action in general than it did the first couple seasons.
lmao I thought the same thing. I sat there and said "ugh not a self relfection episode "
It's fine and a sign of maturity - which Burnham desperately needs - to be able to acknowledge your weaknesses to another person. But IMHO that alone does NOT make you a person worthy of wielding godlike powers. Think how Q would have handled this with Picard. Once Picard admitted he had a tendency toward arrogance and didn't like kids very much, Q would have scoffed and said, "AAANNNDDD?"
I do think it would have been great if pressing the diamond in the book had brought up the Betazoid scientist to be the guide/proctor.
Great Review Nick. Nice impression of this episode and nice impressions, also.
FIRST! Love Ya Sci Guy!
Thank God this show is almost over if the discovery blows up in the season finale, I’d be happy

So glad this is nearly over
I like the episode, but I’m tired of this 32nd century tech being so bad.
This is the worst season not sure I can watch the rest😊
So basically Moll pulled a L’Rell. It looks like the final season is on the same trajectory as the rest of the series. A good build up in the first few episodes. Then a pointless and long wild goose chase that leads to some disappointing deus ex machina resolution. Typical Discovery.
Not to bad an episode but it has the same issue with the writing Discovery always has had.
Not seen this season but it sounds like the actors are doing their best with what was written (and approved) for them.
👍👍🖖
I had to rewatch it this morning again because I thought I missed something as it didn't make sense. It was just the whole episode that ws a dissapoinment
I am tired of the guy with the same overcoat "booker" does he ever change that jacket?
I know sensors were wonky, but the Breen were able to register where Discovery jumped too at the beginning, so why didn't they detect the jump away?
Underwhelmed with this episode as well. I liked the sets but didn’t like how the story developed. I thought it was dumb and predictable.
HOORAY........ONLY 2 EPISODES LEFT AND THEN DISCOVERY WILL DISAPPEAR. SUCH A BORING MESS . BRING ON STRANGE NEW WORLDS. LOOKING FORWARD TO IT.
Wich means we will not see your comments anymore.
@@GMLSX Maybe maybe not. Depends if strange new worlds goes down hill. But, regardless..........i will post when i chose to.
I wouldn't be surprised if the finale is gonna be worse the enterprise these are the voyages only difference is enterprise final season is watchable discovery isn't
I’m predicating a lot of hugging and crying based on the trailer.
A crappy way to end a lack luster show
I think you nailed it.
I covered the Dr Who specials with David Tennant who I love but I hear the new episodes are a bit of a train wreck so I wasn’t going to watch.
The season was started very strong but has gotten weaker each episode
You are dead on.
This was slow af. Too much time with the previous two seasons of Queen Burnham. This season was fully on point until this one.
Nick I echo your skeptisim regarding this episode. I t seems a bit rushed. Not very Star Trek like.
At least Burnham admitted she was ashamed to deliver something like that👍🖖
Great Review. I have been a Star Trek fan from my childhood in the 60s. Now I'm in my 60s and I have to say, this episode was a little flat.
100 % agree
Over all I liked the episode but this Breens thing.... The Primarch acting too stupid, Loosing the map to them was too predictable, I can see how the show finale will be
Another Garbage episode like the rest of the season.
And oddly enough, your reaction is par for the course. Truly absolutely 100% complete garbage
And you’re being forced to watch it at gunpoint right?!? 🤡
Agreed, the episode was 5/10 to predictable with the Breens, overall was ok

My biggest annoyance was the space station filled with BOOKS. It's the 32nd century, why are their books!
Moby Dick!
Because it's an ancient archive.
"If his chest had been a cannon, he would have shot his heart upon it."
they had some roots in a box also
This has got to be the dumbest comment on this thread.
Why do they keep making this garbage show? We should have cancelled this piece of shift three years ago
