The guest this time is a little disappointing. He Knows a lot but is very biased towards christianity. When asked about christmas's pagan origins he just said no and didn't talk about it any more. Yes christmas itself is christian, but most of the traditions that go along with it are pagan, and were a hold over from pagan winter solstice celebrations. He also said that Yule is the norse word for christmas, when it isn't. It's the word for the winter solstice. Also him mentioning the "spring solstice" is not accurate, as spring has an equinox not a solstice.
Thank you for your insightful comment. I'm glad I read some of the comments before I posted almost exactly what you just said. I was kind of surprised when he didn't mention the link between winter solstice and what we call Christmas. The Christians just appropriated most of the Pagan traditions for all of our "holy days" that are celebrated throughout the Christian world today, in order to get the pagans to convert to Christianity. If you have not already seen Zeitgeist the movie you should try to find it and watch it. It was on Netflix for a while a couple of years ago but it is not anymore. The first part of it basically explains how nearly all the world religions of ancient times have many of the same stories as Christianity and it is all connected with astrology. I prefer astrology and paganism. Why not go directly to the source? 😉

No, Jul (Yule) is the Scandinavian word for Christmas. The Old Norse didn’t celebrate winter solstice, and Jul was originally celebrated mid January. Today we celebrate Jul on Christmas Eve here in Scandinavia, though.

Thats not why they don't like saying merry Christmas. They say happy holidays because it doesn't exclude any religions, before a few years we had Kwanzaa, Eid, Hanukkah, and Christmas which not all celebrate in one month. So it made sense to say happy holidays instead of Merry Christmas as a chunk of the population didn't celebrate it. But you still wanted to wish them well with their holidays. Thus, Happy Holidays.

I can’t recall how true-to-source it was, but there was a DeNiro and Sean Penn film by the same name that I remember liking and watching several times.

As a Belgian man, growing up there was point where I went 'hang on' about Zwarte Piet (black pete) and yea, I think most of us realise it is very racist. But boomers and old people get really angry about it. YOU'RE TAKING AWAY FROM A CHILDRENS HOLIDAY, WHY WON'T ANYONE THINK OF THE KIDS!! And it's like yea, sure but we only wanna take away the racist part though. Not the letter-writing or the chocolate or the early-morning excitement and stuff.

My family is so religious that growing up we weren't allowed to believe in Christmas. Instead we were told the Christmas tree gave us the presents. So we wrote our want list to the tree and put them on one of it's branches.
