Thank you.
I done all this and the weeds are back a few weeks later so what have I done wrong? 😢

Thank god for someone who keeps it simple. Easy to follow and useful tip about the sand. Thanks.
MrChris4267 Thank you lol, why make things appear harder then they are. not the shortest video, but I'm glad it seems straight forward.
Did you use sealer or what would you suggest to bring the colour of the brick back up like new ?

Something almost therapeutic about watching this, nice one!
HI
I agree!
Great work and great video. Block paving is a dirty job, but always looks spot on when cleaned and sanded properly! 👏
Nice work and really good advice with the kiln dried sand.
Thanks
Thank you so much for the info. I've got a large brick driveway its filty right now i plan on cleaning it once we get some warm sun your inf is great looking forward to following your advise. I'm an 88 year old woman . I have a good power washer will pick up the nozzle you recomend . Thanks again.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. By far the best you tube video on this subject.
Good job, been there and got the tee shirt and muddy spray-back up to my armpits. Three days work and needed every other year.
Such an easy to follow and imformative video. Thanks matey. Will help me when I go to do mine.
Fantastic video, thank you for showing how to do the job to perfection.
This video is fantastic. Really helped me do my drive.
It really is a messy job 😂
But it looks great. 29 degrees tomorrow. Perfect for the kiln sand to go down. Thanks again
Good luck. It is unusually warm this week, perfect.
very well explained!
Got my block driveway steam cleaned by three young Irish lads, who quoted me £250. My driveway looks cleaner and free from the weeds, however several blocks have become loose because of the water pressure used. The lads did not even bother coming back to sand down my driveway as ought to despite me chasing them. They told me to go and buy some bags of sand and do it myself and even left a trail of mess behind. Feel cheated for the amount of money I paid. I will have to buy the bags of Kiln Dried Sand and do the job myself now. Thanks to this video, I feel confident that I can do the job myself.
So sad that people don't undertake the job properly. In honesty I highly doubt steam was used as its very expensive equipment and is just a buzz word used by chancers to gain work. All block pave jobs should be re sanded afterwards to ensure the blocks stay stable. Unless you have a very large driveway in excess of 150sqM then I fear you have been ripped off if all they have done is cleaned it. At the moment (2021) kiln dried sand is quite hard to get due to a shortage, well it is here in London. Its been in high demand and short supply since end of March.
Dude never get Pikeys to do any jobs on/round your house they’re known con artists.
You might want to use cement sand that blocks the plants from growing in…or so I hear.
Thank you! very easy practical method. I will definitely give it a try.
What a great job.. well done and rhanks for sharing.. Greetings 👍
Thanks for the video👍helped a lot for my first job👍
blueliontime Thank you, glad it helped.

That's what I call a beautiful job well done thanks
Pressure washing will clean the driveway, but it’s hard on the blocks.
Equivalent to about five years normal weathering of the blocks each time it’s done.
Just finished doing my driveway (8/4/2020) and yes all block paving, what an absolute mess. Well worth looking at it when all completed and very rewarding to look at but hope I won't have to go through all that again. Just lift the lot, Tar it, job completed No more mess. Happy days. :o) :o)
If you applied a decent sealer you wouldn't loose the sand next time. It will also help against weeds. Next time will be a simple clean, spray some swimming pool grade chlorine bleach on beforehand and it practically cleans it for you.
@@DirtyDriveAway which sealer do you recommend and do you use this before sanding or after?
@@leewalker9008 something like smartseal is easier to use than a polyurethane such as resiblock. Resiblock will last longer but is very finicky with weather. You clean it, wait 5-7days (no rain 48hrs prior to and 12hrs after application) sand it and seal same day. Make sure the sand is brushed in and swept off really well.
Why not get your husband to do it...?
Very professional presentation - Well Done 👍

Glad it was of some help. It might be old but it's a popular video.
Great videos. Helped me clean ca. 100sq m block pave driveway. Would be good to see some additional videos on how to deal with oil stains (cleaning with turbo nozzle doesn't help at all as one might expect) without replacing blocks.
Paweł Halicki hey, I haven't done an oil stain removing video as they are a nightmare to shift properly. I haven't found a 100% removal method without replacing blocks. It really all depends how long the oil has been down. Even on specific oil removing products it normally says for best results use within a few days of spill. Most of the stains we come across have been down months or years. You will normally remove the dirty colour by using some good ol fairy liquid and then hitting with a turbo nozzle. Resiblock OR is pretty good if the oil stain is recent. Other than that the oil soaks into the block to far to make any serious difference. I would say that there will always be a visible mark left as the blocks are quite thick and oil can penetrate quite deep over time. I bet if I true doing a video of the removal wouldn't work lol. Phill
I find for more recent oil stains you can use cat litter, crush it in to the stain and replace a couple of times soaks it up prety good. Then wash.
Excellent instructional video
I find table salt stops weeds and moss 100% for at least eight months. Only 80p per 3 kg bag from tescos . I just sprinkle it liberally and then lightly sprinkle with the hose so the grains can just sit in the cracks and slowly dissolve through the winter. No need for weedkiller.
A lot of weeds are acidic so that wont always work
I had my drive done like this and it looked just as good as this at the end. Fast forward a month and we got a load of rain. My drive looks like a beach. All the sand just gets washed out.
Sand wash will occur if your driveway slopes and also if the sand isn't swept below the chamfer of the blocks. If the sand joint is too high it will wash out with heavy rain.
You don't have to toss sand away which did get a little moist. Use it on a sunny warmer day, spread it roughly out and you will be astonished how fast is becomes back to its "kilm dryed state".
Great job any suggestions for removal of oil stains on blocks as I was just going to lift and replace. Its a common car park for an apartment block so it's an ongoing problem
To be honest I've tried many products on oil stains. The problem is the longer they are left the deeper they soak in. If you can catch them fairly quickly you can usually shift them with an oil remover. Anymore than a few weeks old and they are typically there to stay. You can remove the dark stain but you'll nearly always be left with a ghosting.
Great video, thanks for the information.
I did same thing on my brick paver floor spreading fine sand and but as soon as heavy rain fine sand washed out . The best alternative spray laundry chlorine mix with water every three or four months,or five ounce of Copper sulphate /gallon water spray which will kill moss.
RUclips algorithm brings us all together once again 🤷🏽♂️📈
Excellent video, clear and concise and to the point. Great to see a professional doing it, I find it's the cleaning of the sludge a pain in my arse, just ordered my turbo nozzle and 20mts of high pressure hose for my 207cc machine, hopefully it should get the job done. Great tip about the sand. Thanks
The sludge is horrid, I scrape it up into polypropylene bags. Any difficult areas then I use a specialist wet vac.
@@DirtyDriveAway would you seal after, any point?
@@jacobthebear problem with sealing is the bloody weather. Yea it can help with weeds etc but doing it properly is expensive. Spraying with a good sprayer is best to ensure good joint penetration but at a sacrifice of using additional product. In this day and age where everything is silly money its not very cost effective. Looks nice and does really help weeds but by the time you add on that cost most customers refuse. It can be a Ballache because it needs to be fully dry or it won't set properly and can leave white blooms. Typically sealer company's recommend 5-7days after cleaning. As a professional cleaner in honesty it probably costs me money as I inevitably have to turn other work away or it puts me under pressure if the weather turns to get it done.
Nice clear simple video.
Upload appreciated!
Brilliant I tried and it was great.
How satisfying. Good video👍
Simply Superb..with very clear instructions..thanks so much sharing!!
Where can you get these nozzles from, and do they fit onto a Karcher?
Karcher make their own version called a dirt blaster I think. They OK but you will be there a very long time doing block paving with a portable washer.
Karchers version, I have used one. But not on block paving. The nozzle I use is either a Suttner or PA but don't think they can be adapted or won't work on a Karcher as a Karcher isn't powerful enough.

What type of pressure washer should I get?
Excellent video ,thanks for sharing.
Top man. Looks fantastic 😃
Hi thanks for the info !! What size van is big enough to carry tools and a bit of water ?? And whats a decent washer ??
Glitch King Glitch King hi, you can spend hours researching washers. Ideally something with a good engine like honda or briggs, a good interpump pump and gearbox. You would ideally need something around 200bar+ that kicks out around 18lpm+ it really depends on your budget. A 200bar 18lpm machine will come in around £1600 ish. Go up in pressure and you will be looking around £2200, but go 250bar and 23lpm will set you back around £3000. Van size i have a LWB transit connect and i can get a 400l tank and all my gear in. Anything smaller and it just wont fit a water tank in as it wont be long enough or have the payload to carry the washer and water plus hoses etc. Phill
Dirty Drive-Away thanks phil
I just bought a gs 200 Honda unbelievable
@@myRUclipsChannel31 I do this pressure cleaning myself along with actually fitting new driveways. I just connect to the clients tap, they don't seem to mind. Also, for anyone that is interested. I myself use a Honda Pressure washer, they cost around 1,400 and are ideal for this sort of work.

great video. Thank you. Now I need to purchase a turbo nozzle.
I like this video i used the dry sand method as well
Very good video and very professional how do you stop the sand washing on a drive with a slope
Dave Workman thank you dave. To be fair preventing sand wash is quite hard especially on a steep incline. Sometimes i find watering in the sand after brushing in can help settle it a bit better rather than waiting for a downpour of rain. Other options are using a jointing compound sand like resifix which sets hard, or by applying a sealer which binds and stabilises the sand. The latter 2 obviously cost more money but will usually last between 18months-5 years depending on the quality of the sealer. Cheap sealers tend to wear off quicker where as something like resiblock trade will do about 3 years and the superior around 5 years. The resifix sand is also good for around 5 years depending on environment. Phill
Thank you
Wow great job
roulettered56 thank you
And the sand stays in the joints and doesnt blow away? ah light misting rain, nice one.i guess a bucket of water and a wiper would work. nice one
Good man. Great job. Thank you.
Could also cover it over with a tarp too so less sand blows away
I did this, and now i have plenty of worms coming out inbetween each block, brings mud up and making space for weeds to grow.
I did put weedkiller before the sand, but that wont last long.
Weedkiller after the sand, it soaks into it then. Weedkilling is not a 1 time deal, it has to be done every 6-8 weeks during spring/summer.
Nice job!!!!
Thanks for the advice
Mine is a patio of pavers vs. driveway but basically the same. It was originally laid with polymeric sand which I feel is fantastic, but I also did read below you mentioned doesnt handle pressure washing well. Well I did use a pressure washer to manually do the entire patio using standard angled nozzle (didnt know about Turbo at the time), got good results in the end but slow process.
I like your turbo nozzle b/c I think it would be faster than with the standard angled nozzle which you need to be a bit more "precise' with as you use it and I think the turbo would be faster since its circular vs like a straight edge water stream, correct?
Q: Challenge is how to clean without blasting out existing sand (so as not to "waste" it or have to dispose of it) - using either standard angled nozzle, turbo nozzle, or surface cleaner (which I read below you dont like the results for most applications), would I be correct in saying its not really practically possible? And polymeric sand will not be able to resist any of these cleaning approaches? And even if polymeric cant resist, isnt it still better than normal sand for at least the life of the job b/c it can help with resisting weed growth to some degree and it shouldnt wash away as its designed to hold? So why not use polymeric in all circumstances, any disadvantages? Cost?
No any form of pressure cleaning will remove the sand it just can't be helped. Polymeric sand is about 5x the cost of conventional sand and can also be a pain to work with because of the polymers. Depending on the driveway, pooing water can leave polymer residue behind and it will stain.
Very helpful thanks 👍
Weedkiller that uses Glyphosate (like the original Roundup) is forbidden in a lot of countries as it can cause cancer.
I actually have some decent results with "weed free" paving sand. By the time the effect wears off after 3 to 5 years it's time to redo the whole driveway anyway. Saves you the monthly treatments and is only marginally more expensive than regular "white sand".
Glyphosate is still used here, although a licence is required to spray it.
FANTASTIC.!!!!
Awesome job! I just started pressure washing on my channel
Great job there.......one question though....
After you put the dry sand in the all the cracks of the blocks what is stopping the weeds coming through again? It can not be the dry sand that prevents them coming back does it?
Nothing stops them coming back. Regular spraying with weedkiller will help. This needs to he done every 6-8 weeks. You could apply a sealer but doing that properly is really expensive.
@@DirtyDriveAway Cheers for that reply ,apologies for what I thought was a stupid question that I asked.
@MrEchoes1962 don't worry, I've had worse lol 😆. Weedkiller is your friend but it needs to he done regularly. After cleaning, when you put the fresh sand in, give it a good hit of 360g/l glyphosate (gallup) weedkiller. Don't get it near your plants or lawn as it kills anything green. It will help keep the weeds under control if you do it every 6-8weeks.
nice job
Good job.
I’ve seen literature stating that a block paved drive should never be cleaned using any sort of pressure washer. Apparently it totally undermines the sand base. You will brush sand into the joints after doing this, but some of the sand being blown out by the washer is from under the pavers, not just from between them. You can never replace that sand unless you lift the blocks. Undermining the sand base causes any vehicles sitting on the drive to end up leaving an indentation. Like two ruts.
chriskeenan1 Not true, when cleaning block paving you only loose about 10mm of jointing sand, a pavior block is at least 50mm thick. If you are getting anywhere near thw base sand layer then you are doing something seriously wrong. You would have to concentrate the spray on the joints continuously. When laying a drive like this the initial sanding uses around 5x the amount of sand to fill the joints. If you couldnt clean why would people buy them, they would look crap after 2 years. Nothing will get the moss out of the joints properly like a jet wash. In fact if you dont clean them weeds will grow and in turn the disrupts the sub layer causing lifting/sinking blocks. Cleaning every 2-3 years is recommend to keep it free from moss/weeds and detritus. Even paving contractors who lay them will offer to clean them. The manufactures only say don't clean them so you purchase expensive protective sealers from them.
chriskeenan1 also the main reason they say not to jet wash is that the home owner who goes at it with there DIY washer invariably neglects to re sand it afterwards. Do this several times and yes you will be at the base layer. The rule is always re sand after cleaning if you want it to remain stable.
Great video,thanks
Your supposed to use polymeric sand it has a hardener in it to prevent weeds.that sand will wash out.
I take it your not in the UK. No driveway in the UK uses polymeric sand its all laid with kiln dried sand as a joint filler.
You need a Surface Cleaner attachment ..like now! I was a Noob and use to clean my Paver driveway the same way and would be covered with that gunk, not to mention all the tiger stripping. Obviously, afterwards I'd recommend sealing and resanding. 👍😎
D Jaquith, i have one, dont like it. Way over rated, i now use a falch pointspeed5. Way better finish than a surface cleaner. The surface cleaner is such hard work on weeds and moss and the dirty water just sits underneath and around the area. At least with a nozzle it kind of rinses it away as you go. I would only break out the surface cleaner on areas with no weeds or moss as it just hs a really hard time.
Dirty Drive-Away
Then you need a better Surface Cleaner, try a commercial model with wheels .. and that matches your GPM of your pressure washer. I have a 250' x 12' plus large parking area paver driveway. Also, several brick retaining walls. The pointspeed 5 is just a larger turbo wand attachment. Also, it frankly makes the property owner angry when that gunk is flying everywhere.
Now I get the driveway clean literally as fast as I can walk! A solid 80% faster and much better even cleaning. LOL I do my mother's and daughter's concrete with pavers driveways in minutes.
I assume you have at least a 4 GPM pressure washer.
Do whatever you want and *good luck!* 👍👍
D Jaquith i have an 18" whirlaway on my 250 bar (3600psi) 23lpm machine. Its jetted to my machine just fine, they just lack the cleaning result i expect. Ive never had a customer complain about my work or tidyness, at the end of the day its nothing a rinse wont sort out. Ive been doing this job professionally for years and have tried various tools and the surface cleaner is my least favourite as it simply doesnt clean as well as other methods. Yes they may be quicker but they aren't without drawbacks. 👍
Dirty Drive-Away
This is just like how I do it, fast, easy, no more gunk all over me nor my home ruclips.net/video/DKvO3QwcXcI/видео.html If someone has a lot of Algae I'll 8:1 dilute "pool shock" (10% sodium hypochlorite) with some concentrated Dove dishwashing liquid; for rust stains I use a product called White Ox.
The world certainly won't stop spinning if you and I do it differently. 😉👍
BTW my driveway, compared to the linked video, is an easy 5X bigger .. which is why I bought good stuff and researched the best and fastest way...
Could u tell me why sand is placed down after? Pressure washed mine with the fine jet took days wish id watched this earlier lol
The sand locks the blocks together and provides drainage and an element of flexibility. Weeds love it but it's part of the structureof the drive. You could seal it to help with sand loss but that will hinder drainage. Phill
What would you recommend in terms of weedkiller that gets down between the pavers and would you recommend applying it before re-sanding? Thanks!
Well, proper weedkiller such as glyphosate (gallup) works well. As a professional, you must hold a licence to spray it as a business. Technically, as a homeowner, you can buy it, although you're not supposed to have it, if that makes sense. As with any weedkiller, it needs to be applied every 4-6 weeks to keep on top of them.
Thank you Sỉr ♥️
Thanks 4 replying but I am way put of my league . What is a jet wash lance ?? I have used straight bleach & brush helped cut down on the manual labor abit ...took all the green mold/gunk that sat on top..then last week really got ingenius & put Ajax powder just shook all over & left now I got whitish bricks in spots....my brother told me best thing is good power wash also tried apple cider vinegar figured if that donesn't work I will drink it (2 tbls. day supposed help with weight, cholesterol &few other things enough of my gardening tips thankd for your help & Iwill continue to watch your videos...luv that accent Irish maybe my mom speaks with accident... enjoy day Marlene
Ha ha Irish, lol nope I'm from London. Ajax may not be the best thing to sprinkle on as yes you will leave behind powder residue. Vinegar or lemon juice etc can damage certain stone types of left un rinsed. Power washer is what we call a jet wash or pressure washer. Watch some more of my vids and will learn the art of cleaning lol. Phill
Thanks looks good
Awesome 👍👍
Rookie question can you use cold water pressure washer to clean the driveway?
It's all I use.
Very nice
Good job thank you
Good job
Great video. Is it worth coating it with a protective solution afterwards.
You can, but sealers are expensive and highly weather-dependent for application. They won't stop it from getting dirty. Their primary use is sand binding, but again longevity depends on the sealer.
Not seeing many of your videos now such a shame really good
This virus has taken its toll as I'm now flat out. I want to do more videos but don't like duplicating content. Hopefully some new ones soon.
A wonderful video, simple with clear instructions. Thank you. Do you ever use the no weed kiln sand?
No its twice the price and to be fair doesn't really work.
@@DirtyDriveAway how many bags of sand do you recommend for a driveway measuring 36 m2
@@irfanhameed8791 depends how deep the joints are but you could get away with 1, but I would say 2 max.
Thanks for the informative video.
One question though... Is it OK if instead of misting the sand with water after re sanding... To use a sealer applied with a roller?
Yes sealing is done about 5-7days after cleaning as it needs to dry thoroughly. Rollers can pick out the sand which is unavoidable. Professionals using acrylic sealers sometimes prefer spraying them down as this gives better penetration and no sand loss.
Were do you buy the turbo nossle
celtic hail hail any jet wash supplier will sell them or look on eBay.
Got another question. Aren't you supposed to use bleach and soap and use a surface cleaner after turboing it?
No that's just overkill. Block paving rarely needs any form of bleach. They are concrete blocks and clean up easy enough with just a washer. A surface cleaner is nowhere near as good as a turbo nozzle.
Now seal it... Glues the sand in place and also makes the pavers look new.
That's all very well, but what about the cost of sealing and the customer doesn't want that expense. Sealers only look good cosmetically for about 12months and the sand binding is not future jet wash proof, unless you use an expensive polyurethane sealer.
What happens with rain..some washes out?
@phsx2890 only if you have a steep driveway. If it's sanded properly and all the surface sand is blown off then you shouldn't loose any.
Very informative. So are moss, weeds and grass etc a lot less likely to be able to grow up through the sand and about how long will it be until they re-emerge?. Currently im keeping on top of my moss, weeds and grass on the patio by using a butane torch from The Range to burn them after I manually scraped out the rivits of moss, weeds and grass with a metal brush scraper that jarred me up for about 4 days!.
Moss typically only grows over winter when it's damp. Unfortunately without a regular good weedkiller the weeds will grow back fairly quickly, especially during spring/summer. By applying a decent weedkiller every 6-8weeks should keep weeds at bay. The scraper method is vicious on the back and arms. Once you've jet washed all the muck out, it's much easier to maintain.
@@DirtyDriveAway cheers thanks for that
Do you have to dampen it after?
@@louisestevenson1038 you don't have to but I find it helps it to settle.
I have been told that using pressure washer on block paving washes out sand from underneath destabilising it and causes unevenness.
No it doesn't. It only does this if you regularly clean it but don't re sand it. When you clean properly you only loose about 5-10mm of jointing sand. A block is 50mm deep, if your reaching the base sand your doing something seriously wrong.
@@DirtyDriveAway brilliant. Thanks for explaining.
very clear thanks
how long should it last? Would you expect to wash old the old sand and replace when the dirt is back?
Every 2-3 years for cleaning block paving. Doing it too frequently can cause damage.
@@DirtyDriveAway cheers
