The joy he has in all these videos is truly the best part. Seeing that he loves to play the songs as much as we love to hear them... that is special. That makes it so much better.
amazing these were really just kids making these layered songs that crush. in high school i imagined them to be 30's at least. matt's basslines on that album are incredible.
Matt, I'd love to see a play along/tutorial for "Axiom" by Rancid. "Maxwell Murder" obviously gets a lot of (well deserved) attention, but since the first time I popped in Rancid 2000 I've always been equally impressed with the "Axiom" solo and I've always kinda wondered if you threw that in just trying to top yourself!
I remember trying to learn this bassline as a 15yr old and the only kid in my town whos ever heard of op ivy, I'm 40 now and still a bit sloppy but it still puts a smile on my face everytime I hear this song
My dream Bass Bunker video would be instead of playing along to the OPIV record, you played along with the other 3 members just out of camera frame... right before y'all announced the reunion tour. Booom! Let's do it!
I'm still waiting for the day that you do 'Maxwell Murder' !! I would love to see a tight zoom in on you doing it, while explaining the process. Pretty please. It's one of the songs that made me fall in love with the bass.
Dude, this album is one of my favorite things. Like, in general, and ever. So good. Also, it seems like you're taking a lot of suggestions and criticism to heart and that is super refreshing. And it shows. Your little thing here has become a bitchin format and I always look forward to hearing from you. It's awesome, homie. Youre the man, man. Thank you. Nice work, much love.
Hell yeah! 33 years ago, got this record, then a bass. Did my best to play along. Big one that got many hooked. Read an interview where Matt was asked about advice for new players. Said 'Just play whatever sounds good.' BOOM! Thanks for much inspiration, Matt!
89' I was 14 at all I wanted to play was guitar. When I heard Out comes the wolves year after my graduation all I wanted to play was the bass. That was because of you! Saw you with Rancid several times. Got to see you with Charger in Bremerton. How the hell was that show not sold out blows my mind. Brandon was there as well with his band. You were right there at the merch table. My Idol. I will take that one to my grave.
This was the first Op Ivy song I heard twenty something years ago on a shoutcast station on winamp and was immediately hooked because radio didn't share any of the good stuff. Love what you're doing Matt and I think it's great you even have music teachers referencing you on their channels naow!
These videos make my heart happy. If TheMusicalSchizo circa 1993 had any idea this sort of thing would happen, where one of his favorite bassists of all time broke down his bass lines he'd lose his damn mind. Now 31 years later, we occupy that reality. Thanks, Matt! (Side note - I'm pretty psyched that 95% of the time my ear picked it out right and played it how you play it on the Operation Ivy stuff - that is a pretty lo-fi record and it's hard to pull the bass out sometimes).
This record had a profound impact on my life and being able to watch you go back talk about how you wrote these sick basslines is beyond rad. Thanks for doing this!
Back in 2007, I did a speech in College Speech 100 on how to play this song on bass. It was a walkthrough of the different parts and the main message of the speech was breaking complex tasks into smaller parts, so it is less overwhelming. I can't say how excited I was to see you bust this out on the Bass Bunker.
Amazing! I like the smile you make every time you run through these gems! I’d ask to hear “Detroit” one of my fav catchy bass lines! Rock on! Merry Christmas!
This song definitely focues on your root notes which you play so Quickly and adds flavor to this song I Also Beleive it lays down your prowess from 1989 to now. Yes please do tell your adoring fans about this infamous look that you get on your face while you’re playing and by the way, are you still looking for your bombshell? Inquiring minds want to know.
Man I learned this from a guy almost 20 years ago and he showed how to play it pretty much spot on to how you do. That last 3 note chromatic run in the chorus I was sure he was wrong. He said it was G# G F#. I played it as G F# E to end the line. Well I’m impressed he got it right all those years ago and I wish I listened closer instead of doing what I thought it would be without actually listening to the track.😅 Now I can play it spot on. Only difference is I sometimes use the open A string instead of fretting the E string on the 5th fret in the verse. Sometime do the same work D note and open D string but only for Ds in the verse. Love your work Mr freeman!
This might be the Operation Ivy song with the most bad/inaccurate bass tab out there… thank you for the playthrough. The way I’ve been playing it never sounded right and I can see why now😂
I would actually love to see a video on coming up with basslines for beginners. The hardest part seems to be coming up with the basic shell of a bassline. So maybe some basic starting points you think of (your basic philosophy on how you follow chords), then maybe some basic tips when coming up with baselines (for beginners), and then maybe how to build off of that to eventually come up with more advanced baselines (which could definitely be a video on its own). Thanks again Matt and hope you have a great holiday season 👍🙏
Mr. Freeman thank you for the Christmas presents to us out here!!! Funny I see my 15 year old self listening to this record and going wow these dudes are super rad!! Wondering if you look at yourself playing these songs and go wow what a trip to be playing these songs now. Thank you Mr. Freeman, and happy new year!! From a US Navy Veteran
Outstanding. I'd love to see Someday . Or Sarcastic (admittedly because I want a better recording of it). Or Hedgecore because I've been going by that online for the past 25 years.
Didn’t you do this one really early on, during covid lockdowns, on instagram? Anyway great song and as always nice to see you go through the different parts of the song. Thanks for doing this!
Matt, I love your videos! Keep 'em coming! But how the hell did you write these amazing basslines at such a young age, with relatively few years of playing?
Me: sitting here in amazement every time.
Matt Freeman: “yeah that was ok.”
The best part of these videos is that big grin you have every time you play. Thanks Matt.
The joy he has in all these videos is truly the best part. Seeing that he loves to play the songs as much as we love to hear them... that is special. That makes it so much better.
The smile that came over your face I can only imagine is remembering the days writing and playing that song.
Where was this when I was 13 and had to learn this by ear!!!!!
This song is why I love Op Ivy.
you can tell he still enjoys playing it after all these years great song
amazing these were really just kids making these layered songs that crush. in high school i imagined them to be 30's at least. matt's basslines on that album are incredible.
the look of joy on your face screams OP IVY REUNION!!!!
Matt, I'd love to see a play along/tutorial for "Axiom" by Rancid. After wearing out my first cassette copy, I've continued to listen to this album at least once a month for 35 years. Hasn't gotten old yet.
Right there with you. Wore out the hectic EP, wore out the Energy tape, and still listening all the time. So fing good
THANKYOU SO SO SO MUCH FOR MAKING A VIDEO ON THIS BOMBSHELL AND HONESTLY EXISTING! YOUR PLAYING IS WHAT INSPIRES ME TO PLAY BASS AND LIVE LIFE!
one of the jewels in my collection 😎
I remember trying to learn this bassline as a 15yr old and the only kid in my town whos ever heard of op ivy, I'm 40 now and still a bit sloppy but it still puts a smile on my face everytime I hear this song
The smile he gets when playing.
"I know, I'm awesome."
My dream Bass Bunker video would be instead of playing along to the OPIV record, you played along with the other 3 members just out of camera frame... right before y'all announced the reunion tour. Booom! Let's do it!

Not to be weird but musican to musican, I dig the smile. It shows you're having fun!!!

Seeing how happy Matt gets playing is song makes me happy in a deep old place in my heart.
Me too brotha!
I asked for him play awesome song!
Hell yeah! 33 years ago, got this record, then a bass. Did my best to play along. Big one that got many hooked. Read an interview where Matt was asked about advice for new players. Said 'Just play whatever sounds good.' BOOM! Thanks for much inspiration, Matt!
Always been a favorite track, but I could say that about the whole album
ohhh yeahhhh
This has always been one of my favorite songs to play on bass. An absolute treat indeed! Thanks for bringing this one into the world, Matt!!!
Idle Hands is insane - can’t wait for you to do that one. Listening to you sing while you play is extra cool too!
89' I was 14 at all I wanted to play was guitar. When I heard Out comes the wolves year after my graduation all I wanted to play was the bass. That was because of you! So bummed I missed that show!!

Amazingi remember twiquing with that song
Matt, Matt, Matt this is the best song ever! Covered it myself years back. I still love it. Thank you so much Bombshell and everting else
amazing, thanks for doing this song. One of my op ivy favorites
These videos make my heart happy. If TheMusicalSchizo circa 1993 had any idea this sort of thing would happen, where one of his favorite bassists of all time broke down his bass lines he'd lose his damn mind. Now 31 years later, we occupy that reality. Thanks, Matt!

Still listen to this Album most days....thanks Matt!
Always love to see the Op Ivy playthroughs!
Excellent video Matt! More OpIvy would be awesome. One of these days. Bankshot. Caution. Healthy body. So many to pick from!
Walking bassline? All I see is sprinting! Great job as always. Happy holidays and a happy new year to everyone in this community!
This record had a profound impact on my life and being able to watch you go back talk about how you wrote these sick basslines is beyond rad. Thanks for doing this!
A day late, but the Christmas present I wanted has arrived! Thanks Matt!
One of the top three punk bass players of all time!
I'd like to know if there's a specific show you're going back to when you're playing through these Op Ivy songs. The look you get is pure nostalgia.

Awesome! One of my favourite Op Ivy songs.

Awesome. Your right hand technique is just epic.
One of my favourite bands since I can remember!
This song definitely focues on your root notes which you play so

fun bassline
I love the bass bunker. Big fan. I'd really like to see some Devil' Brigade upright bass stuff. I'm trying to learn upright right now
Oh Yeah!!!

A timeless classic! Thanks man for all the amazing bass lines🔥
Loving the new intro as well as you explaining the part instead of just playing it. Keep evolving!
with my son in my arms, listening to my favorite songs! Thanks Matt!!!
This might be the Operation Ivy song with the most bad/inaccurate bass tab out there… thank you for the playthrough. The way I’ve been playing it never sounded right and I can see why now😂

hard hard hard. It's hard even to Matt!
Love this one sir. Appreciate you for doing these. Would love to see Maxwell Murder on the Rancid side, and My Life by Op Ivy!
Outstanding. I'd love to see Someday . Or Sarcastic (admittedly because I want a better recording of it). Or Hedgecore because I've been going by that online for the past 25 years.
I was looking for songs to learn and cover for my channel. This one is going on the list. Love it man!!
The best
Didn’t you do this one really early on, during covid lockdowns, on instagram? Anyway great song and as always nice to see you go through the different parts of the song. Thanks for doing this!

This was a staple cover for my teenage punk band 🤙🏻
Thanks Matt !
Love it 😀 😊
Red hot moon please Matt!
Imagine starting OUT writing that. Most would END their career writing riffs like that
I will not quit asking you until you play it! Meat Market from Basic Radio! PLEASE!
Matt, I love your videos! Keep 'em coming! But how the hell did you write these amazing basslines at such a young age, with relatively few years of playing?
Nice one ❤
