Stop Mixing Baking Soda & Vinegar - Laundry Tips

  • Please stop mixing vinegar and baking soda when cleaning. While it’s a very fun reaction it completely naturalizes the benefits of both.
    Baking soda, sodium bicarbonate, is a high pH water softener that should be introduced early in the wash cycle. To achieve this add a tablespoon or two directly into the drum. Baking soda is also an amazing laundry booster that I talk about in other videos!
    Vinegar is an acidic low pH chemical that should be introduced late in the wash cycle. Vinegar helps with stain and odor removal along with fabric softening.
    When you combine the two they neutralize each other, from a pH perspective, which negates a lot of their benefits. I love both just keep them apart, they’re like fighting kids.
    For more cleaning tips and tricks throw me a sub here and a follow on IG and TikTok (@jeeves_ny). Plenty more long format content on the way too!!!

    For top load washers: Add 4 cups of 5% distilled white vinegar solution into the hottest temperature and highest water/load setting. Let sit for about an hour with lid open and water at the highest level. Then drain all water. After that add one cup of baking soda in and restart by filling up the washer again with hot water at the highest water setting. Let sit for a few minutes then drain completely.
    Adding baking soda adds another layer of cleaning, eliminates any residual acidity in your washing machine plus reacts a bit with any leftover vinegar to form an exothermic reaction with CO2 gas as a by product. This can be helpful as the CO2 can agitate any gunk still stuck off.
    It might be efficacious though to add the 1 cup of baking soda to the washing machine water after you let the 4 cups of vinegar seep in for that hour. I say this because this will create the most bubbles (CO2 gas) to agitate any gun in the machine. Drawback is since the solution in the full washing machine is now neutralized, all the pipes downstream are not going to get the benefit of a slightly acidic washout.
    However, the biggest concern the vast majority of time is the gunked up components in the washing machine itself not the downstream drain hoses/pipes.
    So stick with the instructions in the first paragraph unless you want to experiment around.

    Dont use baking soda, use washing soda. Sodium carbonate is a tougher cleaning agent than sodium bicarbonate.

    • @PLF...
      @PLF... Год назад +1

      most sodium bicarb you can buy is technically a mix of the two. Producing just bicarb is a lot more expensive and there is not much difference in the usecase so it's no biggie for most. Pure chemicals can be surprisingly expensive (especially for analysis) and washing soda is more expensive than baking soda by a few factors pretty much for that reason.

    My fabric softener slot releases fluid the moment I close the detergent door. Normally, a washer would fill the slot in with more water to “turn on” the softener slot (it works like an Aristotle’s greedy wine cup; add too much liquid, and a hidden channel will siphon everything out), but mine just releases no matter what. Idk how to fix this.
