Hey Carl, first off, fantastic overview of the pyxis! Secondly, to address your question, Id like to see black magic come out with a full frame global shutter sensor pyxis variant and i think as you mentioned a 3:2 sensor read out would be important to maintain. Working within the engineering confines of this current body I think expanding the pyxis line up for different use sensors is the most logical step that would look to compete with the Red Komodo line at a cheaper price point.
Agreed. I'd rather see one of their very fast RGBW sensors though personally. As the URSA cine is nearly as fast as a global shutter, but can do FAR more frame rates and has exceptional dynamic range.
Two things stood out to me. First, the dynamic range tests from Cined are quite purist, as they don’t apply noise reduction to enhance the shadows. This means you can likely extract more dynamic range from the camera, depending on the sealing. Second, regarding rolling shutter, I think using gyro data could be a good workaround, though I’m not sure how much motion smoothing it would provide.
Absolutely, you find cameras like the A7 IV which do incredibly well on their tests because of the aggressive NR implementation. While the Blackmagic cameras have no NR applied at all. Yes, there is that tool in resolve could help in some situations.
For context, we are also testing the new URSA Cine at the moment, which has pretty incredible dynamic range. The dynamic range on the Pyxis is perfectly fine, very much in line with the rest of the industry. The URSA Cine on the other hand is on a different level.
Great comprehensive review. I'd also like to see some coverage of video resolutions. I was thinking of using the GH7 for some indie 2x anamorphic work, but open gate 4:3 video on the GH7 is limited to 4:2:0 and it can't be output to HDMI without downscaling to 4k. Pyxis looks like the camera I should be looking at. I have a 1.5x Bolex anamorphic which should work with a small corrective crop in the Pyxis open gate to achieve cinemascope or just use the Pyxis anamoprhic 5k mode which uses a 6:5 crop to yield to cinemascope using 2x squeeze lenses. It's only a little more expensive than the GH7.... well at least it's in the same ballpark even when adding the display. You also get a much more riggable setup. Because of extra cooling and high processing hardware that the new RGBW Cine 12K sensor demands, the Pyxis would become same size as Cine 12K. However, after you rig the Pyxis for proper cinema work, their relative sizes don't differ too much (less than 1 kg in weight).

@@mmlewis1030 Even if you limit the recordings of the sensor to 8K, 4K those are downsampled from 12K (that's why those 8K, 4K have the full with of the sensor). And the cooling and hardware power required to process 12K needs space, that's the reason of the size of BM Cine 12K. On the other hand, you said that “if BM don’t bring those sensors then the Pyxis line will fall behind competitors too much.” I consider the Pyxis sensor better in IQ than any of the competitors (Sony FX3, FX6, Canon C80, RED Komodo OG…) under sub $8K. It’s not better in terms of read-out speed and AF capabilities, but in terms of IQ it’s an impressive sensor in 2024 and for some years to come.
13:25 now this is without noise reduction, which the other cameras often do in camera. and id ray that BRAW has some of the most potential for cleanup of any other codec, as it is so flexible and works so well with Davinci resolve. I also think that for the price, the Pyxis is unbeatable. It is a Large format, compact box style camera with internal raw and perfect riggability. The only true competition i see is the Komodo (which is super35 and more expensive), the V Raptor (which is vistavision and way more expensive) and a few of the ZCams, which are either more expensive, or cant do internal raw to the same quality as the pyxis. I think the only other camera that comes close is Nikon Z6iii and the Panasonic S5ii(and s5iix) and those are not boxy, cant rig as simply as the pyxis and dont have the incredible menu system that blackmagic has nailed. I went from a 6k Pro to the S5IIx, and i really miss the simple and intuitive menu of Black magic, more so than i feel like the autofocus is helping me
Hey I just got mine and setting it up now. Loving it but is your fan buzzing really loud? It’s a very audible colicky sound coming out of the top and it’s pretty warm, is this concerning?
Did you buy it from us? If so we can take a look for you and compare it to our one here. There is a fan inside, its not a completely silent camera unfortunately.
I'm sure people will. The trouble with BPU to Vlock adapters which I have seen before though, is that they end up being very long. Which when you then put a Vlock battery on the back, can be quite a lot of stress on the mount.
Lovely camera. Just in time before the 2025 mirrorless hybrid cameras come in play. Internal nd filter would be nice though. Autofocus would be nice too, but i get that it is a cinema camera and people will use dji focus pro. Also for anamorphic lenses of course.
Received the Pyxis yesterday. Quick question. The side screen shows quite a lot of banding on my unit. I kinda assume this is because it’s just not a very good screen (and will never use it for anything other than menu/settings), but it is very noticeable. Viewing angle also very very bad. Is your experience the same perhaps?
Yes it is. I think they have gone for quite a simple screen to keep power consumption down. The banding doesn't bother me to much, as like I said, I wouldn't recommend it for monitoring anyway. But the viewing angles were definitely noticeable when filming.
@@carlyates2487 Thought so too. It doesnt bother me but wanted to double check since I have received faulty BM units before unfortunately. But for now all seems good then. Thnx for the reply!
*The Pyxis is a great step forward, and certainly a very useful camera. I would have preferred some contemporary innovation with a new sensor, instead of regurgitating the old sensor technology, which is already used in three different cameras. I would also prefer to have a compressed codec option to shoot with in 6K, such as ProRes HQ 422, or H.265. BRAW is excellent, but it's not as excellent as RedCode RAW 16 Bit codec (Which is a difference your eyes can plainly see), and I don't always need to shoot in a RAW Codec.*
RED is 16 bit linear while BRaw is 12 bit log, both offer roughly the same amount of colour information once you transfer the linear to log (ie, bring it into resolve)
This is the “ultimate final form” camera for Sony’s IMX410 sensor. Pyxis, and the S1H from Panasonic, probably present the two best examples of how that sensor can be put to use with a good OLPF in the stack. I’m ready for a new 24X36mm CMOS, with two improvements: readout speed and dynamic range. The latter is more challenging, as it requires either an increasing ADC bit depth, or a dual simultaneous gain architecture, but I’m hoping that will come to mid-level fullframe cameras sooner rather than later. Physically, I’m waiting for a “Pyxis Pro” with two things: internal ND, and a V-Mount/Gold Mount battery option. Larger batteries quickly become necessary anyway when rigging up (the whole point of Pyxis,) so a few LEMO ports for powering monitor/wireless/hot-spot/FIZ motors would be fantastic. If one of those ports could also be run/stop up front, that’d be icing on the cake.
BM should offer the option to urn off the fixed side monitor when you are using the new external Pyxis monitor. This will certainly save some battery life.
You can pixel peep as much as you like but without internal NDs, it's a deal breaker. In fact, coming from FS5, FS7 II and FX6, the lack of variable electronic ND, well....
Internal ND's would be a massive improvement if they were to add them. There are a lot of ways to add ND filters now though, so it is manageable without. Especially for the more controlled work which Blackmagic is well suited for.
@@carlyates2487 I guess if you're shooting studio or feature work with a large crew, then the lack of internal NDs is less of an issue but IMO, this camera seems very unsuited to single handed doc work, where the 'quality' of internal RAW recording is less attractive even with the novel Box form factor. BMD seem to have always pushed picture quality over ergonomics, right from their very first cameras yet Sony on the other hand, have always struck a successful balance between the two, right back to their very first ENG Betacams.
They're about as different as they can get. C80 comes ready to shoot out of the box and has autofocus, great for run and gunning. The Pyxis? Terrible for run and gunning, great for indie filmmaking and small crew commercial work.
@@phrasalsyntax I disagree, I think the C80 and Pyxis look about identical in equal conditions. These shots are from anamorphic lenses which makes it look mor filmic. The C80/C400 has other strengths like fast readout speed, 1 extra stop of DR and better low light, which only come into play sometimes.
I would buy three of these as it’s incredible value and quality - but without proress I can’t use it in broadcast 😢 - a lot of people are the same. Not Proress Raw just proress flavours.
This is exactly what i mean in the video. Blackmagic raw is fantastic, but lots of people are not in control of the workflow and codec choice on their projects. If you do want to use the Pyxis, it is still possible. But you would have to use a Video Assist as your on camera monitor and then use that to record prores.
Hi there, Carl: I have the most OCD comment ever. Can you PLEASE rotate the lamp shade in your studio on camera right so that the seam in the lampshade is facing AWAY from the camera? Those seams drive me nuts. Thanks in advance.
I don’t think there was a need for such a big screen on the side of the camera just for settings. It just makes the camera longer than it needs be. The external monitor makes way more sense for monitoring anyways. Even if they said they had reused parts for their pocket camera for that screen, it isn’t even the same quality one that is on the pocket 6k pro lol.
Its a control panel really, and works very well for navigating their menus. Like I said in the video, their menus are so well designed, i'm glad the camera can get full use of them no matter what monitoring option you are using at the time. Otherwise you would basically be forced into using the Pyxis monitor.
I'm still waiting for the black magic micro cinema G2 box, which they've said that they aren't making :/ They should have added CFExpress or SD card and a BT chip to the micro studio or still made a separate one
@@carlyates2487Yeah, mostly the size. Also the price of course. I don't feel like I need anything more if I could control it with a (phone) touchscreen, because I can always add a handle if I wanted more ergonomics. I'm not a pro drone pilot but I think they could also benefit from a relatively large sensor and BRAW in a modern camera. In addition to that because of vibrations and because one shot takes are common mission critically capable CFExpress cards could be needed. Pressing buttons on a camera on a drone is also much more annoying than using an app
@@carlyates2487Yes, the size mostly. The price is also attractive. I don't really need anything on the camera except ports if I can manage it via a (phone) touchscreen, and I can always add handles if I need the ergonomics. If I really needed the inertia of a bigger camera I could add lead weights and still keep it small but I don't think I'm doing that. I'm not a pro drone pilot but I think they would really like it, because a lot of them used the first version. Drones have a lot of vibrations and there are often one shot takes so a reliable CFExpress card is required. A relatively large sensor with BRAW is attractive in a tiny camera for them. The Inspires are sort of in that niche but a lot less customizable than something self built
In the US BMD on commercials or proper paid professional sets is not seen as ok. This could be the best camera ever... its still a BMD camera. That stigma is real. These will get used in VFX and such like filming the motion capture etc... but not as A or B cams to Arri Sony or Panavision or Red. Sorry but that is the hard inescapable truth of this brand. I have owned several of their cameras before you go assuming I am throwing blind shade. But if you want a budget sub 10000 dollar camera to GET YOU PAID -Sony Fx6 - Fx3 - Fx30 -Canon C80 C70 C400 Komodo-X - these WILL GET YOU PAID. Save up and get the models that make money and are in demand.
Admittedly, i'm in the UK rather than the US of course. But I'm not sure thats true? You see the Pocket cameras being used all the time in car rigs, VFX rigs for actor closeups, crash cameras etc. The Pyxis will offer them something similar in a much more riggable formfactor which will be very useful for that kind of work
Needs internal ND and ProRes. Just up the price, lose the goofy side display, and include those features. I would have bought it already if those were an option.
Agreed. Its still a fantastic camera, but those two things would make it better. On prores, I'd love to see an advanced version of their Pyxis monitor which had the video assist recording built in. Then you could record Prores or H.264 /H.265 on their when needed without adding much extra bulk to the camera.
We have spoken many many times on this channel about the lack of AF in Blackmagic cameras. Including our recent live stream interview with Craig Heffernan, their Technical Sales Director for Europe, where he mentioned it was something they are actively looking at developing in the future. And explained that other technical advancements like their BRAW codec and RGBW sensor technology took priority for them in R&D which is why they haven't made any advancements in AF in recent years.
Pyxis is cheaper and have better colors and IQ, the raw codec is both great and restrictive (not well welcomed by all Editors / Productions ). Other than that, everything else is better on FX6. Its a question of 20% better IQ vs Ease of use and well knowned workflow.
I own the fx6, love it death as it covers all bases, but it depends on your work as well, if you don’t have time to set up lighting and frame your scenes all the time the Bm might give you a hard time. But I haven’t used it yet so I can’t confirm.
well yeah i know that prores is widely use, but i highly agree on bm raw capabilities, i admire bm move to promote braw! i highly do! hate prores thought. why shoot prores if you can shoot with RAW and intelligent raw.
Two personal very annoying limitations: Unusable second ISO for the low DR and hight noise floor and no uncropped 50p (not to mention the 120/100p).. Again, a pity.
@@wadfasfsdfdsfsf literally just sold my BMCC6K. The noise floor is horrendous for a full frame camera in 2024 and the 6k pro is objectively still a better camera in almost every way. It has a great image under the right circumstances though and I hope people enjoy it, it's just not for me.
I’ve shot with the Cinema Camera 6K after sunset and poorly lit wedding receptions and was able to get great images out of that camera and the Pyxis is the same sensor.
The C400 is a fantastic camera, and also very good value for money. But its a very different pricepoint still than the Pyxis. The industry needs cameras at different cost levels.
The only downside of this camera is the sensor, it’s an A7III sensor, is it a bad sensor? Nope. Just that people want something unique and different sensor instead of one from an older camera. But with that, the price of the Pyxis will increase as well.
People make a big deal out of nothing, the Blackmagic 6K full frame image literally looks nothing like the A73, so who cares if they are using the same technology as a base?
I personally would like them to make a new Micro Cinema Camera that has bluetooth, card media and two USB-C slots with at least one supporting this monitor. The Pyxis, to me, is overkill.

@arunr4103 that’s very presumptuous of you to assume. I haven’t filmed a wedding in decades. But why do you say it like it’s a bad thing?
@arunr4103 did I mention autofocus?
@arunr4103 I didn’t mention autofocus?
this helped clarify so much there's a lot of fluff out there
13:25 now this is without noise reduction, which the other cameras often do in camera. and id ray that BRAW has some of the most potential for cleanup of any other codec, as it is so flexible and works so well with Davinci resolve. I went from a 6k Pro to the S5IIx, and i really miss the simple and intuitive menu of Black magic, more so than i feel like the autofocus is helping me
from your list, s5iix is the best bang for buck, great cam. You can record B Raw from s5iix using a BM vid assist 12g
@@robertdouble559 which costs more money, youd also need npf970 batteries and a charger as well
@@robertdouble559 which is a clunky monitor without ccamera control
You are right, the value proposition on the Pyxis is fantastic
I love proRes
Hey I just got mine and setting it up now. Loving it but is your fan buzzing really loud? It’s a very audible colicky sound coming out of the top and it’s pretty warm, is this concerning?
Did you buy it from us? If so we can take a look for you and compare it to our one here.
There is a fan inside, its not a completely silent camera unfortunately.
I hope someone makes a nice BPU to Vmount adapter with a built in battery for hotswap
Yes a lot of people use these cameras with manual lenses.
Do you know when the monitor is shipping?
Its still a few months away I believe. Hopefully November or December
How is the battery life with the Pyxis Monitor connected?
BM should offer the option to urn off the fixed side monitor when you are using the new external Pyxis monitor. This will certainly save some battery life.
@@phrasalsyntax Agreed, that would be a useful option.
17k in the pyxis body would end all rival cameras
I wonder how this compares with the Canon C80 🤔
They're about as different as they can get. C80 comes ready to shoot out of the box and has autofocus, great for run and gunning. The Pyxis? Terrible for run and gunning, great for indie filmmaking and small crew commercial work.
@@avx111Exactly. And the same can be said for FX6. They are designed for different uses.
Canon C 80 is very functional but has a more broadcasting/corporate video 'look'. Pyxis is more filmic 'look'.
Noted! I’ll try and remember for the next video 😂 unfortunately it’s the ProAV showroom and so that lamp gets moved all the time!
SSD don't have locking USB built in so you need a bulky enclosure
What appeals to you about the micro cinema camera? The tiny size?
Global shutter?
No I’m afraid not.
Yeh, just ignore lack of reliable autofocus. Lovely image though.
I'm still torn between the FX6 and Pyxis. ND and the host of Sony lenses I have already is making it hard for me to pick.
Whats more important to you? Image quality & easy to rig design or speed & convenience?
Pyxis is cheaper and have better colors and IQ, the raw codec is both great and restrictive (not well welcomed by all Editors / Productions ). Other than that, everything else is better on FX6. Its a question of 20% better IQ vs Ease of use and well knowned workflow.
@@EXTREME_PATATORand don’t forget. BRAW is coming to the fx6 this year
I own the fx6, love it death as it covers all bases, but it depends on your work as well, if you don’t have time to set up lighting and frame your scenes all the time the Bm might give you a hard time. But I haven’t used it yet so I can’t confirm.
If you want your images to have a significant jump in IQ go for the Pyxis. It will also train you better as a cinematographer.
Nice box design, but not really new at Blackmagic. The Ursa Mini was not much bigger and similar "boxy" in format factor.
Believe me, the URSA mini is far bigger when using them practically.
well yeah i know that prores is widely use, but i highly agree on bm raw capabilities, i admire bm move to promote braw! i highly do! hate prores thought. why shoot prores if you can shoot with RAW and intelligent raw.
Blackmagic raw is definitely better. But unfortunately a lot of people are not in control of their own workflow and ProRes is a client pleaser...
Two personal very annoying limitations:
Unusable second ISO for the low DR and hight noise floor and no uncropped 50p (not to mention the 120/100p).. Again, a pity.
the lack of lowlight capability for people using this outside a studio setting rules it out for more people than the rolling shutter..
doesn't rule it out to the thousands of folks that use same sensor in a bmcc body and are fine!
@@timekeepermedia5142that’s fair enough. Thanks for watching
I’ve shot with the Cinema Camera 6K after sunset and poorly lit wedding receptions and was able to get great images out of that camera and the Pyxis is the same sensor.

Just save up more money and get the C400. They dropped the ball with the Pyxis.
The C400 is a fantastic camera, and also very good value for money. But its a very different pricepoint still than the Pyxis.
The industry needs cameras at different cost levels.
I donno, the texture of the BM image is still very soap opera vibe. (the footage feels cheap)
Oh really? You should try the new URSA cine then, the footage from that camera is incredible. We are testing it now for an upcoming video
@@carlyates2487 possibly. Will give it a try.
The footage from the Pyxis looks nothing like the a7 III
I personally would like them to make a new Micro Cinema Camera that has bluetooth, card media and two USB-C slots with at least one supporting this monitor. The Pyxis, to me, is overkill.
lmao
