Hi! Recovering coasterphobe here. I had a traumatic experience on a coaster as a kid, but this summer I just rode a bunch of coasters at Disneyworld and not only did I conquer my fear but I loved the experience and feel overall more self confident. The best way to get over coasterphobia is to start with the smallest coaster at the park to build up confidence, and work your way up to bigger and bigger ones. Keep in mind I'm American and have never been to Alton Towers (but it's on my bucket list for sure) so I'm not speaking from personal experience here, but from the POVs and reviews I've seen, I'd say do them in this order: 1: Octonauts Rollercoaster Adventure (unless you don't want to ride a kiddy coaster, then skip to 2, but I think kiddy coasters are a good way to get a first taste of what a rollercoaster is actually like if youve never been on one, or to dip just your little toe into the pool if you're really scared) 2: Runaway Mine Train 3: Th13teen 4: Wickerman 5: Galactica 6: Oblivion 7: Nemesis You should be ready for the Smiler after that. I haven't been on an inverting coaster yet, but everyone I ask says that inversions mostly just feel like gravity is pushing you into your seat. People who've rode the Smiler say it's disorienting but not so much so that you feel it after you get off the ride. I'd recommend watching a POV of a coaster before you ride it so you can get an idea of what you're going into, but don't overthink it before riding. In my experience, the anticipation and uncertainty is the scariest part. If you're scared of motion sickness like I am, stay well-hydrated walking around the park and don't eat before going on a ride. If you feel dizzy after a ride, eat some ginger or peppermint. If you're afraid of the rollercoaster crashing, don't be. Coasters go through very strict safety inspections every day and night to ensure they're safe to ride. Coaster accidents are extremely rare. Statistically, the chances of getting injured on a coaster are 1 in 24 million and the chance of dying is 1 in 750 million meaning you're more likely to be struck by lightning multiple times than you are to be in a rollercoaster accident, and you're WAY more likely to be in a car accident or just slip and fall while walking. On top of that, most accidents that happen on rollercoasters are caused by the riders being reckless/dumb and deliberately breaking the rules (ie sneaking onto rides when they don't meet the height requirement, trying to remove their safety belts to hop to a different seat, leaning WAY outside of the car on purpose, etc). Have fun smashing those fears!
