I got a few rows of golden bantam emerging. I live in zone 7. South Jersey. It’s been a rough start for my first set of seed. I think half died because of the messed up temps. Planted 2 rows in may 1st but encountered some frost. Then replanted all 8 rows by hand again on may 12th. Got a few up that I see now. Once they are a foot long I’ll start my 2nd treatment on 15.0.0
i agree with you that pipe thing is crazy i tried it for about 5 minutes i can do it faster by hand dropping may drop to many some times but thats ok i get more corn. i am 83
I used your double row method on drip tape from your advice last year due to garden space. So far it’s working great. Planted peaches and cream. It’s up 12 inches. Injected first round of blue stuff and have hilled it with Chilean Nitrate. Hilled with an iron tooth rake. 15 mil tape with 6 inch emitters. I like that the water kind of ditches in the valley between the 2 corn rows now after hilling on each side the row. I plan on alternating injecting every 2 weeks with blue and Chilean until tassel starts forming.
Interesting thing I heard, from an old guy I worked with, he happened to be native American, who grew up in a farming community, he says 3 drops of olive oil, in the top of the corn, where the silk is, deters worms and bugs... I may try it this year.
I look forward to every episode! I'm in coastal Carolina, zone 8b. I'd love to see you set aside one plot and do intensive or square foot gardening for us little gardeners. I only have a 20'x23' garden plus some pots.
I planted my corn in February here in SW Florida it looked amazing until I killed it off. I was so heartbroken I could have cried. I’m new to growing corn and I sprayed it in the heat of the day so, I started over last weekend.
@@LazyDogFarm Thank you for your reply! I was just going to go every six inches along with the drip tape ,on either side with maybe a foot in between... too close? Lots of folks just do it " square foot garden style. thanks for the tips on water and fertilizer etc. So helpful!
I started my corn indoors, Obsession. i planted those puppies about 2 week ago when they were 5 inches tall in the side of drip, 6 inch emitters alternating side to side. Sprinkled little high N fertilizer and added manure & compost. The area was covered fall and winter with DeWitt pro. I am gonna fold the fabric between the rows held down by a few bricks. Never grew corn b4, but the farm in the edge of my little town grew this variety, best corn ever. will let you know how it goes. After setting out all these little corn plants, whew, I can see why people use tractors! since they are on drip, the last 1/3 of the rows will be sugar baby watermelon, and save cantelope seedlings, Candy var
Planted in double rows like you suggested last year and got quite a good harvest, despite probably not fertilizing enough. This year, I couldn't decide so I'm going with a few repeats of last year: Honey Select, Revelation, Serendipity, and then trying Evolution, and Cafe. All Synergistics, so hopefully won't matter if they cross-pollinate a little, but the plan is to stagger planting based on DTM anyway. It caused more than a few headaches last year, but after making an entire Excel spreadsheet comparing the varieties this year, I caved and just got all 5 types 😂
My fenced garden isn’t ready this year so I’ll be planting corn in 25 gal grow bags. To get a head start I germinate my corn in Solo cups under grow lights and heat mats and will hand plant into the grow bags. Using Bodacious seed this year since that is what I had. Can’t wait for harvest time - fresh corn is my favorite!!
I'm growing that Eden corn that you grew in a 4 x 8 raised bed this year. My first time trying to grow corn, so hoping everything goes well. I did get them planted in the middle of March and they are about a foot tall.
Totally agree about the pvc pipe. I planted Temptress sweet corn mid March. It then proceeded to rain about 5 inches over the next couple of weeks. Corn still germinated good, but I got behind on weeds and fertilizer due to soggy ground. Just starting to get caught back up. Corn is now 10”-12” tall now. I may try the double row next year if weather permits. Really like your videos.
Here in ohio we dont get the worms, but half the crops get smut (ergot fungus). The purple death for sweet corn. I guess its a delicacy in mexico but here in ohio its just a pain in my 6.
I’m hoping to successfully grow corn by request from my granddaughter. I’ve had squirrels run off with my seedlings and had bunnies eat the seedlings. I still have a raised bed I need to assemble. I have two varieties. Fingers crossed 🤞🤞🤞
If I could keep raccoon and opossum out of my corn, I’d grow some. Last year I planted 200, I got 2, 198 went to nature. Will take any tips anyone has Butter and Sugar variety which is heirloom variety is what I grew
What is the best liquid fertilizer for corn and how often to I give it? Right now it’s about a foot tall. But I have alot of mushroom compost in there. But want them to grow well. Thank you
Your videos have been so helpful to me, as a "newbie" gardener. You mention using a drip "tape", but is it an actual pipe? Will a 1/4" drip line with 6" hole spacing work?
Drip tape lays flat when not in use, then inflates when water is running through it. You could use 1/4" drip line too, but I find drip tape much easier to use in an in-ground garden scenario with multiple rows.
I’m going to try the double-row method this year. You mentioned using a larger row spacing of 40 inches between the double rows compared to what you’d typically use for single-row spacing. Is that 40 inches the distance between the center of each furrow/double-row, or is it the spacing between the rows of corn? Looks like the two rows in the double row are about 12 inches apart, but if the 40-inch spacing is between the center of each furrow/double-row, wouldn’t that mean the corn rows would be closer to each other than 40 inches?
I ask this question because I don’t have a wheel hoe and will have to spend a little more time getting the row spacing down. So far, I’ve planned on having 12 inches between the rows in the double-row, and spacing each set of double-row 36 inches away from the next double-row of corn. This setup gives me about 48 inches of spacing between the center of each double-row, and I’m wondering if this spacing is a little too far now?
Hi Travis, Can you talk a little bit about using black plastic when planting corn. I live in the Pacific Northwest and getting the ground to warm up, containing moisture in clay soil and weed control seems to work for me when growing corn. Yes, I do use drip tape under the plastic and I do use fertilizer prior to seeding double rows. I would like your thoughts...
I've never grown on black plastic. A lot of the commercial guys around here use it for tomatoes, peppers, cukes, and watermelon. I've even seen a few do it with corn, but not many.
Thanks, Mr. Travis, I have a small raised bed I grow my corn in and was wondering what the simplest spray method of varmint prevention you might know? I've used peppermint oil to help deflect last year with mixed results. P.s Im just an hour or so south of you in North FL Thanks!

Cover crops between corn rows - is it possible to plant cover crops between rows once corn is established ---- I would love to see this experiment done especially if it reduces the need for crop rotation or addition of fertilizer or( chickens etc)
It would have to be planted at just the right time, before the corn gets too tall to shade it before it gets up and going. It sounds good on paper and would look good, but you'd have to time it just right. I think it would probably work better with field corn which takes longer to mature. Sweet corn, especially the supersweet varieties, is so fast-maturing.

I’m growing peaches and cream corn. Does it have a very short harvest window?
It's in the middle. Longer than something like Silver Queen, but not as long as the supersweets that we plant.

Onions are rough.
@@LazyDogFarm you attribute it to weather or the coop grow not being as good as the fertilizer you used last year?

Pollination might suffer if you do that. I'd probably plant at least two double rows at a time to ensure decent pollination.
