  • The secret's out! In today's video I share our two favorite early sweet corn varieties that we plant on our farm, including our seeding and fertilizer rates.
We plant 35 acres of sweet corn on our farm with our 1979 JD 7000 planter and plant 11 different times from mid April through mid July to ensure that we always have a fresh patch of sweet corn to harvsest from during the entire summer here in Ohio.

Nothing wrong with using older equipment if that’s what works for your operation. Heck we still use an old 2 row Oliver planter for sweet corn. Works great. Even planted some of the neighbors sweet corn for them with it. I’ll have to remember Bolt variety for future planting. I’ve planted Coon’s Choice from Burrus Seed before and it’s been a good early variety 63 or 65 days I think. Got my first planting of sweet corn in on Friday (Ambrosia) and my mouth is already watering just thinking about it. Another nice well explained video. Have a great day God Bless.

We have farily new equipment for our grain operation but for the small acres I have in produce, I just can't justify going into debt at this point in my career...I'm ready to start slowing down and hand it off to the next generation....produce farming takes a toll on ya after nearly 30 years. Hope you have a good growing season! Thanks!

Yes, they are very expensive machines now, I think around $58,000! Thanks for subbing the channel. I will check yours out as well. Don’t worry I’ll be making several green bean harvest videos this summer.

We started out with 3 acres in 1996 and it was increased a little each year until we peaked at about 40 acres. Because of raccoon, birds, droughts, weeds, ect. we normally only averaged about 500-700 dozen per acre. Some acres will be closer to the state average of 1200 dozen but there’s always a few acres that will yield terribly around a few hundred dozen and that brings the average down or will have to be passed up because of too much corn. We don’t have center pivot or travelers for irrigation and rely on natural rainfall which really hurts us about 1 year out of every 5.

@@wishwellfarms I hear that. I'm am central Canada, and this drought has blown us away. Rains once or twice in the spring and not again till mid fall. Can't wait to see that trend stop

We have a 65 acre vegetable farm with 2 retail roadside stands and we attend about 12 Farmers' Markets around Columbus, Ohio and employ about 20 high school and college kids to harvest and sell all of the produce.

When do you plan on planting your sweet corn this spring 2024 ? I live just northwest of you I Coldwater Michigan. I just have a small garden . I checked my soil temp today and it's right at 60 degrees 3 inches down. My only concern is a frost.

I wish I could have planted today, April 9! Hoping to get some seed in the ground this week but if it rains it will be next week. 60 degrees is perfect for early corn and I wouldn't be too concerned about frost...even if the corn was up a few inches and got nipped by the frost, in my experience it almost always comes out of it and does just fine. Because the corn plant's growing point remains below the soil until the fifth to sixth leaf-collar stage, freezing temperatures before this stage does not typically kill the plant. Hope that helps!

I am looking into growing 2 1/2 acres of sweet corn this year as a last minute idea. How big of a bag did you use to plant that patch you did in the video? Its about the size field I'm looking at putting into.

Most sweetcorn is sold by the “M” or 1000 seeds. You’ll need about 20 to 24M per acre. It’s been so long since I’ve purchased any seed by the pound not sure exactly how many pounds that is but I’m thinking a 25 M bag probably weighs around 10 pounds.

Gowan, Rupp, Stokes, Seedway. Some of the best in the USA right there.

We get about 750-1000 dozen per acre when plenty of rain. No irrigation for our corn.
