I planted mine on the same day! Mine are a shorter variety. They get to 4-5’ and planted them in a block of 10 gallon bags. It’s working very well! They are fabric grow bags so I have to water mine about everyday since it’s often 100 degree here still. I give them water soluble fertilizer every week (it’s my own JLF nitrogen fertilizer) and they are so nice and green with wide leaves and very little insect damage. I’m very excited to see the crop. ☺️ I had an earlier crop and it was a bit of a bust. I planted 16 and two rows and though they pollinated fine, the ants (leaf cutters) and deer/bunnies ate the tops off the ears! So sad. I got maybe two cups of corn out of it but it definitely gave me the corn growing bug and I planted again! Wish me luck with the pests! Our deer/rabbit fencing is under construction hence the grow bags. Everything must remain mobile so I can move them into the new garden space soon! 👍🏻☺️ Great video! I planted my onion seeds today (short day as I’m in the south) and brassicas. I’m getting ready to plant my carrots in my partially shaded garden bed and that worked well last year. Next will be English peas. ☺️I love fall gardening. It’s kind of my main growing season here in the south. It’s the only time I can grow brassicas to maturity and even get Brussels sprouts to grow at all! 🤷🏻♀️I had to learn to work with the climate I’ve got!
Grew in a rectangular small patch. Great growth but I missed “helping” the pollination. What should I have done to pollinate the silks. I have lots of cobs w/o kernels.
I just harvested my second planting of corn this year in a 4 x 8 bed. I’m curious, how many ears are you getting? I only get about 36 good ears per planting.
You cant only because the potatoes would have to be dug up and it would disturb the growing corn roots. And Please Visit The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Neem Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Peppermint Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C Rosemary Oil: bit.ly/43IJl9C
This is my first year to try to grow corn. I planted, watered a lot, and fed my Silver Queen corn. I used Alaska fish emulsion, and 13 13 13 fertilizer. I planted in a 4' x 12' rectangle, my husband and I mixed Black Cow topsoil, manure and Canada Gold Peat. We put hardware cloth under the bed. We put cardboard on top of the hardware cloth. We filled the bed with the soil mix. My corn is taller than me (5'7") I tried to plant 4" apart, but I think some of them are 3", and I must have dropped some seeds, because some are way too close. 😢 My corn has tassels. But not one single ear or silk. 😢 We had a long drought. I watered every day. We had a lot of rain for a couple of weeks solid. I didn't water then. But why no ears? Maybe I didn't feed it enough? (There was one seed from some other kind of corn that got planted along with my Silver Queen. It grew faster, taller and has silks.) Maybe I didn't plant it deep enough? It got blown over by wind during the rain, but we added stakes and Florida weave, and righted most of it. And now, we have beautiful corn plants with tassels and no corn. 💔 What did I do wrong? {{{ Update! Maybe I spoke too soon? I think I found the very beginning of baby ears, not big enough yet for silks (very small) ? I'm going to research how corn grows and see. }}}

Hi Gary, your videos are fantastic. I’m gonna try corn this year. Two questions. First, what is your actual growing space are you saying it’s 4 x 4? Also, what do you think the very basic minimum of rows could be in order for this to work, I have a limited space.
lt's framed 4 feet by 4 feet so its 16 sq feet of growing space. Aside from raccoons the corn did great. You will want to water and feed it more with a water soluble planted this close together. So Ive done 64 seeds in this space. I recommend 48-64 seeds. I feel like you need a square this size. You could probably get away with a 12 sq feet of growing space. You just want to ensure pollination. Thanks! Over 1500 gardening videos on my YT channel. Here is how you can support me, & The Rusted Garden... So, I can plant them 6 inches apart and skip rows? Just a six inch spacing horizonal and vertical. Has this worked out for you before and you had good large ears? Please let me know. Thanks
Yeah you can do that with 6 inch spacing. You do want it to be a square or such as it helps with pollination. The Rusted Garden Vegetable Seeds & Home Garden Supplies: www.therustedgarden.com Earn 15% and become a TRG Affiliate for our seed & garden shop Sign Up Here: bit.ly/4aarkDD
How often do you get 5 ears per stalk. Dig a trench put the dirt on the side, then put a few bags of sand on top of the dirt you took out of the trench. The dig another trench on the other side and put that dirt on top of the sand. Now you have a trench on each side of a mound. Only water the trenches. Roll all your seed up in a paper towel then fold a put both ends in a mug of water. When roots come out of the paper towel roll separate and plant on the mound.

Thank you for sharing your tips.
I will have to try next year
Love your videos!!!
Great video!
I did the same this year (about 6" apart) but the ones on the back and some in the middle did not get enough sun and did not grow tall or produce corn. Also mice is eating the corn off the plants that did managed to produce! :(
Great info ! Thanks
I absolutely love love you and your channel. You are my big brother in my head!!! Do you ever freeze the corn if you have a lot?
Cheers. I dont freeze corn as I tend to eat it raw right out of the garden, Lol.

Very interesting, I learned a lot. Does anyone know how far apart the rows were? He only mentioned the spacing (6 inch) but not row spacing. Thanks. I didn't realize it needed so much water.
My distance was equal to the row seeding. The more you pack in the more water and fertilizer you need.

I have 73 corn seedlings in peat pots right now. And a big 5x8 patch for as many as i can fit in. I figure on gving away 10 -30 sprouts, but this is interesting. Maybe i can put 60 plants in the ground
Just water them and feed them more when close together. Good luck.

This my first venture in growing corn. I'm in pa. I see tassels growing. So how long till I see any silks starting. So far I don't see any
Thanks.
I have a 4x4 ft space where I'm going to grow potatoes and I was wondering if I Can grow corn in with them. Someone told me I couldn't.
Thank you :)
You cant only because the potatoes would have to be dug up and it would disturb the growing corn roots.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN oh yeah, Duh! I didnt think of that. Thanks for the link :)
Question: if you grow in containers how deep does the soil need to be? Would 12” be enough (kiddie pool) or maybe 18” (grow bags)?
This is my first year to try to grow corn. I planted, watered a lot, and fed my Silver Queen corn. I used Alaska fish emulsion, and 13 13 13 fertilizer. I planted in a 4' x 12' rectangle, my husband and I mixed Black Cow topsoil, manure and Canada Gold Peat. We put hardware cloth under the bed. We put cardboard on top of the hardware cloth. We filled the bed with the soil mix. My corn is taller than me (5'7") I tried to plant 4" apart, but I think some of them are 3", and I must have dropped some seeds, because some are way too close. 😢 My corn has tassels. But not one single ear or silk. 😢 We had a long drought. I watered every day. We had a lot of rain for a couple of weeks solid. I didn't water then. But why no ears? Maybe I didn't feed it enough? (There was one seed from some other kind of corn that got planted along with my Silver Queen. It grew faster, taller and has silks.) Maybe I didn't plant it deep enough? It got blown over by wind during the rain, but we added stakes and Florida weave, and righted most of it. And now, we have beautiful corn plants with tassels and no corn. 💔 What did I do wrong? {{{ Update! Maybe I spoke too soon? I think I found the very beginning of baby ears, not big enough yet for silks (very small) ? I'm going to research how corn grows and see. }}}
You are doing fine. I wouldnt change anything. Silks sometimes come later. But if they dont its not from your side

???? I'm getting ready to plant a 55 day variety. Thanks for the video = I've never grown corn before! How did you take care of the raccoon problem so that your corn reached maturity this time?
The raccoon got most. You really have to trap and release them.

When I planted corn in 6-inch spacing between plants in rows in a squared area bad winds bend down the corn. Do you have this problem?
So, I can plant them 6 inches apart and skip rows? Just a six inch spacing horizonal and vertical. Has this worked out for you before and you had good large ears? Please let me know. Thanks
Yeah you can do that with 6 inch spacing. You do want it to be a square or such as it helps with pollination.

I planted mine close together and they're kind of a bright/light green compared to the dark color I'm used to around here. I'm waiting for my mulch and nitrogen to make a difference (added last weekend). Could it be that it's just the variety?
It can be. But they should darken up.

Wouldn't it help to trim the leaves above the silt so the pallin doesn't get deflected, or even hand palliate?
It is very dusty and with wind it finds the space. But your ideas are good.

Problem i have had with the close spacing is that leaves overlap from other plants covering the tassels too much. So a lot of pollen doesn't get through (just sits on the leaves ) and i have to do a lot of hand pollination.
Good point.

How large can one scale this up? For instance, could I plant a 12' by 12' plot like this...say 6" spacing to get nearly 300 ears of corn?
6 inch would work. You do have to keep up the watering and feeding.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Thanks for the encouragement! I have a drip irrigation system that accepts an inline fertilizer, so I'm confident those issues can be addressed. 👍
Too late for this year. Good info for next year.

Little tiny black bugs were on my corn. Stalks are yellow/brown 😢 what is it that fed on the stalks?
