I reuse the plastic dishes. It works well and is extremely economical, though I note you mentioned they're a penny each?? The absolute cheapest I have ever found is 400 60mm plates for just under $40, or roughly 8-9c each, but for the size that's a third smaller than the 90mm. Anyway, I scrape the agar and whatever waste or contamination into the trash bin outside, then toss the plate into a small tote filled with soap and water so that when I bring the dozens of plates into the kitchen to wash out I'm not blowing spores everywhere. Lightly scrub in the sink, then dry or air dry. Store until needed, then prior to use move them to flow hood or SAB, spray with 3% hydrogen peroxide, let air dry (70% Iso makes the plastic cloudy, doesn't kill spores, 3% peroxide does.). Replace lids, treat plates as if new (pour new agar). I only ever have to toss them when I've scratched the bottoms too much with a scalple, crack one through carelessness, or if there's a particularly nasty looking mold growing.
this seems very economical 👍 I normally just stash them off to the side after they are cleaned and use them for spore prints or other nic nac things around the lab. I might try this in the future if I have some down time to see how they compare to fresh plates in the flow hood 👍
Im new to gome mycology and have watched a lot of your videos from over the years. This is the first time ive seen a brand new release. So thank you for all the info youve shared as an experienced professional. Also, just want to say that you look better than ever. Happy new year and best wishes.
thanks for watching and following along! I usually use vented lids and pour them out then when I store them I use shrink wrap to prevent from drying and then when I use them I use parafilm for working cultures- it’s the best of both worlds 👍
Great info! I now use only glass petri dishes, and do pouring after sterilizing, i've never tried sterilizing the glass petri with the agar in it, do you know a specific tek for doing it, i don't find any, and thought that it was not recommended due to condensation or boiling spills. Thank you
yes I just fill normally, cover in foil, cook and let cool 👍 it helps if the plates are vented but my experience is the condensation will evaporate in the flow hood as they cool off and I leave them there for a few days before storing to check sterility 👍 look up “no pour agar tek” on the interwebs there might be a more refined process out there 🍄❤️
Great overview! I wish there were more options for glass. I can only find a few places to buy them, but I want to avoid contributing to plastic pollution.

i use ketchup cups
For real, I found a certain brand that can be opened and shut with one hand easily, makes pouring so much more efficient
@@skymagruder5270 lids are in a different pack so no worries opening with one hand
I found the few glass ones I have come in very handy for spore prints
Awesome video gary :P loving the HD quality

thanks for watching and following along! 🍄❤️
Also, with plastic, I write strain, date, source, etc on it. On dish documentation.
yes this is an important note 👍🍄❤️
Dang I logged i got on at the perfect time today thanks gary!
Thank you Garry for your sharing, greetings to you from ALGERIA 🇩🇿
Thanks for the video, Gary! I'd have loved to see something about Vented vs Non-Vented Petri dishes. An important topic to fighting condensation...

Could you do a farm walk-through sometime? I feel like it's difficult for most people to imagine what a highly functional farm looks like
yes I have a tour from a couple years ago but Ill do a current one soon when things are back in full swing
@FreshfromtheFarmFungi you rock! I'll check out the older vid
Would you wrap the prepared glass dishes when putting them in the pressure cooker
I don’t usually wrap them but if I did they make autoclave pouches which are nice or foil would also work well
@@FreshfromtheFarmFungi no issues with moisture getting inside the glass dishes?
Great overview!

You can reuse them, and recycle when they get too worn out.
im in an abusive relationship with pyrex dishes. I love them, they keep jumping out of my hands any chance they get. Sucks man 😂
Yay big up more plastic waste my guy realy use glass put in the extra work!
