This video made me realize Jokic really breaks the game by being the best midrange scorer and passer at the same time. Usually to get the most efficient shot you need to be close to the basket or three point line, but Jokic operating in midrange is such a boost to his teammates since he leaves the paint open and also leaves the three point line more open and he makes the perfect passes.

But he gets called for offensive fouls and plenty of super minor offenses while constantly getting bear mauled with no whistle (and still scoring with unreal efficiency through heavy contact) and even gets ejected because of frustration with these crooked refs!

Just a thought here, but as a Lakers fan, I gotta try and find an answer to how to stop Jokic. Running the math on his game, I found keeping him on the perimeter and only giving him looks from 3 might be the key. With his overall efficiency numbers, he actually scores fewer points if all his shots are 3s, despite his percentage being very respectable from that range. Additionally, it will be more difficult for him to generate offensive rebounds and mismatches for team mates from there. With that said, I've long agreed with all the points you've made in this video and is truly one of the most impressive offensive players I've ever seen. His assist number going up, I feel, is a result of him getting a higher quality team around him over time, with Denver having been downright genius with their long-term roster building, resulting in more of his passes translating to made baskets.

Sure! That’s a smart strategy but:
      1) who do yall have that can keep him from going wherever he wants to physically?
      2) who do you have that can outsmart *and* outplay him to execute that? LBJ is smart enough but not big or durable enough to pound with Joker for 4 quarters, let alone 4-7 games
      3) Joker would happily generate more offense for his boys than shoot anyway, which led to the whole “make Joker a shooter” strategy when he put up ~50 against the Suns last playoffs
I’m not saying they are unbeatable and certainly any strategy might work for a game, maybe even two but it remains to be seen who has the strategy and the personnel to outduel Jok and squad since last postseason but we’ll see!

Great video! A point that you passed through quickly deserves more attention… the fact that Jokic has such a high TS% is impressive, but his offensive rebounding and put backs make it even more insane. Many games Jokic will be something like 13-18 from the floor but of those 5 five missed shots, the dude had 3 put backs. Which is to say, if put backs were factored into TS% his numbers would dwarf everyone else

It's hard to accept at first, especially for us "old heads" but I've been watching Denver religiously throughout his career and he's more than different. Way beyond just being a problem. Terms like "unguardable, & cheat code" get used extremely often. I've heard multiple: He's the most intelligent player ever. He sees the court like Gretzky saw the ice. The complete awareness is historically unmatched. & Never have so few calls gone to someone who gets hacked on like golf balls at the Driving Range. I'll save the rest for the book. 🤔😉

Great breakdown! I really appreciate that you go deep on the analytics and used relative true shooting to compare between eras. Also looking at where Jokic’s scoring clips compare to the league averages.
One thing I hope you consider for the future though. I think you may be confusing percentages and percentage points. So when Jokic is shooting, for example, 72% at the rim when the league average is 65%, he’s shooting 7 percentage points better than the league average not 7%. 7% better would be about 69.5% where as Jokic is shooting closer to 10% better. It’s minor I know, but just a quirk of percentages.

Me personally wilt during his days when he became a playmaker was the greatest offensive player to ever touch a basketball court (Not skill related but production)
(Note assists weren’t tracked as freely in the 60s as the person you pass takes a single dribble you no longer get an assist)
He was still a scoring beast and could now effectively beat double teams
Basically getting rid of his biggest weakness of forced shots
And he could still go off for 60 any time while also being able to drop 20 assists at the same time.
And while he might not been as efficient as Jokic but truthfully I think we can all admit getting double and triple teamed every Time you touch the ball as wilt was does make scoring as effiecently as Jokic hard as well there wasn’t a 3 point line in the 60s so far less spacing allowed defense to double or triple team a lot without much of a disadvantage. And ofc lastly he averaged like some nonsense 10+offense rebounds per game that’s just unholy
And if we go by one’s career I’d take wilt over anyone
He showed he can drop 50 as easy as he can breathe
Drop 10-20 assist like it’s a walk in the park
Grab 20 offensive rebounds like it’s just another day at the office

No, and the reason is simple. This era is easy to dominate. Jokic isn't the only one posting ridiculous stats.
The NBA is averaging the most points since the 1960's. Luka is putting up roughly a 35 point triple double. LeBron at 40 is posting the same type of stats he did at 25.
60 and 70 bombs dropped with regularity. Triple doubles are nothing.
Nothing against today's players. I'm one of the rare people who (smartly) believes all era's are roughly the same, talent wise.
The difference is 100% the rules.
I'd love to bring Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Hakeem Olajuwon and Shaq to this era and see what they do.
In short, Jokic is great and would be great in any era. That said, I think in the 90's, he's just be a 20-12-4 guy. Not a 26-12-9 guy.
First off, they didn't let bigs orchestrate offenses like that. The most they'd let bigs do is kick it in to big fella, and if he gets doubled, pass to an open shooter.
Secondly, there were more actual BIGS back then, and they could camp the paint.
Thirdly, the game was more physical. Stuff that gets called a foul now wasn't called then. Ticky tack stuff.
Give someone like Bird the freedom of movement (traveling, let's be real) that they have now. Give him the spacing. Let him orchestrate the offense (he was a brilliant passer) and Bird would average 35-12-10.
    Easy.

Think about that, the results he gets and the great numbers are being accomplished with having the ball one-half of the time. That's mind-blowing; nobody comes close to him at any time. I don't like the narrative that goes like "the best passing big man". He is not a passer. Passing is just one way of punishing defensive mistakes. If you leave someone wide open, if you ignore a cutter, of course he is gonna get that easy field goal. The funniest part is that when playoff time comes, Jokic increases his PPG by 4-5 while keeping all the assist, rebound, and efficiency numbers. And also he starts to hit 46% from 3 because he can. They are giving him MVP for his regular season greatness but it isn't even Jokic's best form. Watch him in playoffs. He is making history.

His level of responsibility is double or triple to that of his predecessors. He has to be the number scoring option giving you 25-35 a night, the best rebounder, run the entire teams offense and facilitate. None of those other guys averaging 10+ ast a game had to do half of that. They were able to sit back most of the time, facilitate and run the offense and score when they had to.
