For me, a big draw to your channel is getting educated on real world myths. I’m a sucker for those kinds of ancient stories, customs, etc. And of course, how you’re able to show what influenced GrrM to include in ASOIAF. I believe starting with myths first would be well received 🤙🏼
Oh man, me too! Even if GRRM isn't writing off them (he probably is), I love the lore behind everything we can find roots in old world mythology. It creates wonderful characters.
Thanks for the stream and for including my question? With regards to suggestions, I would say Davos, especially his episode where he's stuck on the island.
Ygritte is Ygraine, the mother of Arthur Pendragon, whose sire is Uther, who is connected to ASoIaF via Uthor Hightower, the first lord/king of Oldtown
This was an amazing companion video to the Vedic Dany one! I thoroughly enjoyed both of them. I like all of your videos - theorising ones and this potential new mythology-first series, so in any case, I shall continue to watch out for your content.
You talked about Shiva's army, and while there's a clear parallel to Khal Drogo and the dothraki, it could also be related to Jon Snow and his wildling army. Even if Jon and Dany don't end up having a romantic relationship, they are very related and this could be a symbol of their parallels.
Hi David! Also in Chinese mythos, the phoenix is the female counterpart to the dragon. So we have dragons reborn etc. Interesting how we never hear of that female archetype!
Correct, that is what he meant, and I definitely got my basic concept of what “sacred mythology” is from Campbell and people influenced by him (like Graham Hancock).
Is Dany's "Slayer of Lies" title an extreme form of retributive justice? I'm assuming she will kill Faegon as a false usurper, but I'm more intrigued by a potential confrontation with Stannis in the north, currently serving as a false Azor Ahai. Aemon said that false light leads further into darkness, so would Dany (much more legit Azor Ahai/Nissa Nissa figure) have to slay that lie in advance of the endgame? I guess that would also be retribution since House Baratheon ended the Targaryen dynasty to start with.
yeah you know that's so many movs away from where we are I don't have a good guess as to if and when and how Dany and Stannis could meet... I do think Stannis will outlive the battle of WF though
A great stream as always LML! I loved hearing you talk more about Dany she’s easily the best character in ASOIF! Do you have any recommendations for beginners looking to learn more about this mythology? It seems so interesting
catching up to the stream after coming back from work! the video was awesome!!! the stream's great!! the drogon constellation going up the mountain gave me some laughs lol.
Love what you are saying here, and I also love how so much of this not only applies to Dany, but Arya has some ties in here too, considering how much they are similar to each other and parallel each other within the story. Anyway I just wanted to copy and paste what I have about Arya's name meaning and how she is also connected to Parvati and Aphrodite, ect: * The Sanskrit word Arya is a surname and a masculine and feminine Hindu name, signifying 'goddess parvati' and it means “noble, honorable, and of good family”. In Hindu and English speaking parts of the world, the latter influenced the Italian name Aria which means “air” or “song”. The name Aria is of Hebrew, Italian origin meaning “air; song or melody”. As an Italian name, Aria's literal meaning, air, is meant as a musical term denoting a kind of song or melody thanks to it being applied to vocal solos performed in operas. Hebrew Aria, is a variation of Ari, meaning “lion”. Aria however, appears earlier in Greek mythology as a woman of Crete that bore a son name Miletos by Apollo. Most likely her name was a variant of the Greek Areia “warlike” or “of Ares” an epithet of both Athena and Aphrodite. Aria is also the name of a nymph in Greek mythology In the Albanian language, the name Aria means “treasure” or “gold” or “of high value” * Now a lot of people would just scoff at the fact that one of the variants of "Arya" is associated to Aphrodite because Arya is only 11 and a "tomboy" but we have to remember that not only is Arya a literary mirror to Lyanna who was crowned the "Queen of Love and Beauty" but also how Arya has a crap ton of swan symbolism in her story and swans are specifically tied to Aphrodite. Aphrodite was also wed to Hephaestus, a blacksmithing god, and Arya already has future romantic foreshadowing (quite a bit of it actually) with Gendry, a smith. * I apologize for high-jacking your comments section on a Dany video to bring up Arya, but I heard you mention the Greek "Areia" and Aphrodite and thought I could also add these tidbits to anyone browsing the comment section. :D I think what's really interesting is how GRRM takes these archetypes, these mythological characters and places bits of them in several characters but in different ways. Arya definitely isn't a traditional "Aphrodite"-like figure, neither is Brienne. Dany and Sansa are the more traditional archetypes, but even in Dany's case she definitely takes on the "Warrior" aspect, and I definitely see Arya maturing into a more balanced figure as well when it comes to "masculine" and "feminine" aspects. If anyone who reads this has anymore Aphrodite symbolism about the women (or even men!) in ASOIAF I 'd love to hear it, especially when it comes to Dany, Arya, Sansa, and Brienne. :D
yeah that all makes sense actually, very cool! Good catch about the swans... I also think Arya is going to be an "angel of death," like Dany, an instrument of the many Faced God so to speak. I think they do have a lot in common in certain ways
@@DavidLightbringer Oh yeah Arya has a ton of swan symbolism and the more I look into it the more I find actual connections to her story. It's definitely deliberate and meaningful to her endgame I think. When I first discovered how many good, substantial parallels, Dany and Arya have I was very surprised, but pleasantly so. I guess there is a reason these two are my very favorites. :D
I watched this over a couple of days so it’s not entirely clear to me but I can’t help but notice the alchemical principles and symbols like dissolution, personal transformation plus others that I remember hearing the other day.

Before watching the video, it just came to me that one of the very likely sources of influence on this topic would be George's mentor and very close friend Roger Zelazny's famous book 'Lord of Light' (yes, Rhllor's title is a reference to it, Zelazny was very influential for George). It is an excellent sci-fi story, very similar to George's style that takes place on another planet with the characters assuming the aspects of Hindu deities. Kali/Durga, a proposed aspect for Dany, also plays a very important role in that book. And the main character assumes the role of Kalkin, a storm god! It's a must read for sci-fi lovers and I'm sure people who enjoy ASoIaF would also love it. Edit: hey you did mention it in the video! I'd recommend it strongly, it's a very fun book.
The Odin Bloodraven-video and Davos sounds cool to me. What I want the most however is the next Signs and Portals Sansa episode. I really want more Sansa!
Is there. Any chance. That you would do a follow up episode with other Vedic symbolism for other characters. Jon And Ganesha is a stretch but Bran is a dead ringer for Akhilanda, the goddess of the never-not-broken.
I'll have to look into it, I had been building up that chunk of research for a couple years and I pretty much fired all my shots there... but I've never heard of Akhilanda so I'll check it. Thanks!
@@DavidLightbringer what you’ve put together so far would take me a lifetime! I’m sure there’s a ton Joseph Campbell level symbolism for main character studies. Keep up the truly excellent work!
Idk why I got excited that you mentioned that you have a bird! I don't have a cockatoo but I do have a cockatiel. Smaller bird but he is big in attitude lol. Anyway, onwards with the video. :-)
Kali/Raktabija battle ending A) Kali, having devoured an army of demon clones born of Raktabija's blood, drank the spilled blood and... just kept doing that until he bled to death... just started killing everything in sight and Shiva threw himself under her feet, bringing her back to consciousness before she started killing the Devas. Think of the Others being able to create an army out of the bodies of soldiers slain in battle by somehow infusing them with their animating essency thing. The more you fight, the more the enemy army increases. I don't really want to think about what this would mean for Dany and any potential Night King/Other Kahuna but somehow in the need to weaken him, she takes his animating essency thing into herself, battle rage ensues. Jon Snow then puts himself on the line to try to bring her back to herself before he has to put her down like Old Yeller (I need to stop watching Lindsay Ellis videos) Ending B) Kali, having vanquished and devoured Raktabija, goes into a wild victory dance that threatens to shake the universe apart, and Shiva throws himself under her feet... So, having absorbed whatever George is going to be using for a Night King/Other Kahuna, she is being exultant in her victory somehow in a way that she is failing to notice that she is potentially harming the people she brought her dragons North to save... I can't really picture how it would play out unless it's Mereenese Masters taken to eleven... and Jon Snow has to risk himself and bring her back down to Planetos Ending C: Kali, having eaten Raktabija for lunch, she goes on a rampage that ends when Shiva takes on the form of a baby and begins to cry. Kali's maternal instincts kick in, she stops rampaging, picks up the baby and begins to nurse him. This is my favorite version. Also, this is the version with the most potential for shit getting seriously weird with Jon/Dany/Other Kahuna but even George has limits... doesn't he? So Dany absorbs this Othery essence, depletes and defeats the Others (is there even going to be a Night King type character in the book? Do they have a leader? Or are they just what amounts to an alliance of independent icy warlords?) then head off for King's Landing... and lets it loose. Somehow it brings out the bloodlust in her and she just unloads. I can't see her deliberately targeting civilians but maybe not caring so much about the collateral damage. I don't know if I buy into the idea of a Jon/Dany romance in the books. I think Jon being her only living relative (if you discount the female line Blackfyres) might serve for that bond of affection. Basically, Dany loses it because somehow she had to absorb the essence of whatever makes the Others Othery in order to defeat them and it's seeing Jon hurt or possibly the cries of her "children" that brings her back to ground. How'd I do?
Great video and great stream LmL! I could only catch the first few minutes live. Can you do a mythical character study for Rhaenyra? Do you think the Amethyst Empress and Bloodstone Emperor were step-siblings like Rhaenyra and Aegon II?
I'm thinking of getting back into it... I was doing Bikram for a short while in San Fran years ago, and I really liked it. I need to try to explore meditation though
There is also Yajooj and Majooj (Gog and Magog). They are also mentioned in Islam as being these 2 tribes that are trapped behind a wall created by Allah. The two tribes both have 40,000 primitive men that each have 1000 offsprings. One day the wall will eventually fall signalling a major sign of the day of judgement. This reminds me a lot of what lurks beyond the wall with the Others, the wildings, the children etc.
nope, I sure didn't, although I only dipped my toe in Persian myth in this one. Is there anything about the legend of Ahurani that seems to match the Azor Ahai story?
Some humans thinking of black as the culmination of all colors while others believe literally the opposite that black is devoid of color. Classic humanity move.
Hey LML, I am taking a stab at Twitch streaming. Would it be okay if I play your channel during breaks, etc.? I generally listen to your show when playing video games anyway, so it is pretty standard imo.
I mean I certainly have, and it's been discussed extensively... the key there is that the Valyrians are basically nazis with dragons. The Targaryens are different; they aren't genocidal slave lords. But Valyria, well, it's easy to see the parallels to Nazi Germany
Quick Mexica (Aztec) choaskampf Tlaltecuhtli, the Great Caiman, would become the Earth and the sky, or Earth Mother. On every joint of her body was a mouth, each as hungry as the next, and when Tezcatlipoca, whose animal spirit is the Jaguar and Quetzalcoatl, Spirit of the Wind, (Venus) came down from the heavens (13 levels) and into the primordial ocean of chaos where she dwelt to catch Tlaltecuhtli, she bite off the foot of Tezcatlipoca and that is why he is depicted with one foot as a smoking mirror. Tezcatlipoca and Quetzalcoatl eventually transformed themselves into large serpents and captured Tlaltecuhtli and tore her in half. Half would become the sky and the other half the earth. The Ometeotl seeing the suffering of Tlaltecuhtli sacrificed its own blood and thus allowed the fruits of the Earth to grow from her body. From her hair sprang the trees and the bushes. From her skin grew the delicate grasses and flowers. From her eyes, springs, wells and caves. From her nose rose the mountains and from her mouth the great rivers flowed. For her sacrifice the new Earth cried out to be fed with human blood.
I'm probably completely off the mark but when I hear you talk about Nissa Nissa being a blood sacrifice I imagine this particular situation going down. A man married to Nissa Nissa for all the wrong reason, like for example, being a queen's consort in hopes to being the one to rule! Nissa Nissa dying in child birth, only for the child and mother die. The consort take over his dead queen realm. The consort did something to make the pregnancy fail and take the life of the baby and the mother. He would get to be king and a bonus death to create the sword the way the Great Empire of the Dawn's forged swords. Not only does the queen loose her life, her child's life, her kingdom but her soul too! That's the kind of betrayal a person would create a long night over! That's the thing Danni would have to fix. I know she'll defeat the Others but the sacrifice she will do will save the life of the child, her child. I imagine the child being born out of a loving relationship will be the reason it survives! Am I crazy or just guilty of fan fiction? A video on how you see the long night going down as far as the blood sacrifice and sword creation would help put things into perspective. Anything from what you gathered by both symbolism and mythology. I love the layers you keep finding to this story! It only makes it even better! Love your work!

I appreciate the didactic nature of your videos. I had no idea there was this level of mythic allusion in ASOIAF. George Martin is giving James Joyce a run for his money when it comes to literary allusion.
That's a good comparison, though I know Joyce mostly from what people say about him. I read Owen Meaney way too young and never went back. I think I read Portrait when I was very young too, same thing... I remember liking that one more. I've done a bit of research on Finnegan's Wake, the phenomena, but haven't tried to actually read it. It seems like you'd need to do research to read every paragraph, haha.
I'm so glad someone else said that. Although I don't think GRRM delves to the same philosophical depths as Joyce, the sheer quantity of allusion and the cryptic duality of the text is really very similar to Ulysses.
What better way to prove to the world that you are THE QUEEN, other than destruction? Dany saw the admiration Jon and Sansa got from the people, true love. She rationalized that making them FEAR her, would be satisfactory, since LOVE was no longer an option. Cersei, Robert, Tywin, Arys, Meaghor, The Dothraki - they all agreed. I dont see Dany being any different than any other Tyrant. She just had a Dragon. Imagine Tywin with a Dragon - how many cities would he have razed? Dany was never a diplomat. And all of her diplomats were dead. She only had one solution in mind - a Final Solution. Talking, requires agreeing. And she was done trying to get these people to agree with her. Her mistake was killing the innocent people of Kings Landing. When she should have destroyed the entire Northern Army and the Iron fleet. Taking the power away that Sansa and Jon leveraged against her.
@@DavidLightbringer Now I see why the other RUclipsrs dislike you. InDeepGeek, JoeThe Magician, History of Westeros.... Maybe its your arrogance and attitude.
@@DavidLightbringer And thank you for being a perfect example of why I think the way that I do. Your over the top, aggressive response to me, having a different opinion. Is the perfect example of how people at the top become tyrants and eventually just destroy anyone in front of them that disagrees with them. Your approach, like Dany's could have been softer and more diplomatic. But instead, you went for me and decided to go HARD. Just because I have a totally different take on why she burned down the city, that doesn't mean Im not paying attention. And just because you have a following, that doesn't mean that only your perspective is valid and correct. You may want to rethink your approach when engaging with people that have different ideas. Don't become what you hate.

I was meant to say 400,000 primitive men in each tribe
Did we talk about Ahurani, Persian Goddess of water? Ahur/ani Azor Ahai?
nope, I sure didn't, although I only dipped my toe in Persian myth in this one. Is there anything about the legend of Ahurani that seems to match the Azor Ahai story?
We've already figured out about Lyanna -- she's half a centaur (the person half).
hahaha
i miss dany !!!
The new intro is stunning! Can you please tell me the name of the intro song? I love it!
Not that the whole stream wasn't amazing but hearing u talk to puppy Nissa made my day 👌🏽🤣🤍
I want the mythical astronomy of Berserk.
I adore Sunday!!!!
Some humans thinking of black as the culmination of all colors while others believe literally the opposite that black is devoid of color. Classic humanity move.
If I had to put Dany and Daario into astrological sun signs, I would choose Libra and Aries respectively.
Hey LML, I am taking a stab at Twitch streaming. Would it be okay if I play your channel during breaks, etc.? I generally listen to your show when playing video games anyway, so it is pretty standard imo.
This one is for the algorithm pyre.
6:40 good reminder of how you are the #1 handsome man
Rewatch binge 🎉
Side character ideas - I need Beric.
Omg did anyone else notice
Targaryen
Targ-Aryan
???
😳🤯
I mean I certainly have, and it's been discussed extensively... the key there is that the Valyrians are basically nazis with dragons. The Targaryens are different; they aren't genocidal slave lords. But Valyria, well, it's easy to see the parallels to Nazi Germany
@@DavidLightbringer absolutely agree, loved the new Dani video and look forward to seeing more content!

I missed it live fml

Japanese mythology has been heavily influenced by Buddhism which is Indian and born from Hinduism, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bodhisena#:~:text=Bodhisena%20(Tamil%3A%20%E0%AE%AA%E0%AF%8B%E0%AE%A4%E0%AE%BF%E0%AE%B8%E0%AF%87%E0%AE%A9%3B%20Chinese,Huayan%20school%20of%20Chinese%20Buddhism.

Taking the power away that Sansa and Jon leveraged against her.
terrible analysis
you aren't even paying attention the character's own thoughts and motivations. disgraceful attempt at lit analysis
@@DavidLightbringer I have thought that very same thing about many of your videos XO
