Are you sure your #95 gun, the Winchester 92, isn't a special order short barrel rifle? It has a rifle butt stock. Just curious on how it's confirmed to be a carbine. It's a great gun no matter what.

Yes, would like to see the letter on this gun. Madis' Winchester Book states a non-standard buttplate could be special ordered on carbines. With a special order gun like this one, I certainly think that could be the case. My personal opinion is that if this was a rifle with a shorter than standard barrel, it would have a rifle style forend cap instead of the carbine barrel band.

Unfortunately, it is not in a “letterable” serial number range. However, you are 100% correct sir, the key to the carbine I.D. is the barrel band and absent cap. The “crescent” or “rifle” butt would an additional special order feature. We have sold several carbines that would also be considered special order with a “Shotgun” butt

It's a good point about the lack of the fore end cap. It's appropriate that the gun doesn't have the front barrel band because those were only on the .44WCF and .38WCF carbines. So I guess what we're saying is that this is a .32WCF carbine with special order wood and engraving, where the wood was ordered with a rifle crescent butt plate.
